American Greetings Corp. (NYSE: AM) said that its founding Weiss family has agreed to acquire the greeting card company for around $878 million, or $18.20 per share (plus a 15 cent dividend).
Mortara Instrument Inc. of Milwaukee has agreed to acquire the diagnostic cardiology line of Cardiac Science, a Bothell, Wash.-based subsidiary of India’s Opto Circuits. The deal is valued at around $21 million. www.cardiacscience.com

Alfalight Inc., a Madison, Wis.-based developer of laser diodes and handheld infrared and visible laser systems, has sold its commercial segment product lines and semiconductor fab assets to UK-based Compound Photonics. No financial terms were disclosed. Alfalight, which retains its defense lines of business, has raised VC funding from such firms as Advanced Technology Ventures, ARCH Venture Partners, CenterPoint Ventures, KPL Ventures, In-Q-Tel, GF Private Equity, InterWest Partners and Venture Investors LLC. www.alfalight.com
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) has agreed to acquire book recommendation site Goodreads for an undisclosed amount. Goodreads had raised around $3 million in VC funding from True Ventures and individual angels. www.goodreads.com
Gibson Guitar Corp., a Nashville, Tenn.-based guitar maker, has agreed to acquire a 54.4% stake in Japanese audio equipment maker TEAC Corp. (Tokyo: 6803) from Phoenix Capital for approximately $52 million. www.teac.co.jp
