Apple’s app reviewers haven’t lost their appetite for tasteless entertainment
Apalon has done it again.
The latest offering from the Belarus-based developer of such off-color iPhone apps as Drunk Sniper (toilet bowl humor) and Doodle Farter (flatulence) is 100 Nazi Scalps, a game designed to cash in on the popularity of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
The program is a crude but bloody horizontal scroller in which the goal is to kill and, if time and wounds permit, scalp an endless stream of WWII-era German soldiers.
100 Nazi Scalps hasn’t reached any top-10 lists yet, but it was featured as the “free app of the day” Tuesday on something called Frisky Mongoose and by Thursday morning had been rated 1,743 times, which suggests a certain level of popularity.
Most of the user comments seem to find pleasure rather than objection in the game’s level of violence (“So brutal and so cool!”). Not that filing a complaint would necessarily hurt sales or jeopardize its standing on the App Store. Italy’s tourism minister this week demanded that Apple (AAPL) remove Apalon’s What Country app, whose Italy entry features a “Mafia Only” parking sign. It’s still available for sale.
Apple’s new iPhone developer guidelines say it doesn’t need any more fart apps. Soldier-scalping apps, however, are still welcome.
