Dell has released some pricing and shipping details for its Streak mini tablet (aka Mini 5) today at AllThingsD.
According to Engadget, the Dell Android device will be available for $500 unlocked and open for use on other people’s networks. The five-inch mini tablet is only an inch bigger than the HTC Evo, which is due to be released later this week and has many of the same specs: same Snapdragon processor, same 800×480 display, same ability to make calls, should you desire.
The Dell Streak is already confirmed for O2 in the UK, which will completely subsidize the phone with a two-year contract. The only carrier in the U.S. that uses the same frequency as O2’s radios is AT&T (T-Mobile uses different frequencies for 3G but would likely be able to connect to its EDGE network) so they would be a likely carrier partner.
It will be interesting to see if AT&T will offer the same data plans that they offer on Apple’s iPad, which is sold at the same price point, without subsidy.
I’ve reached out to AT&T for comment and have yet to hear back one way or the other.
CNET’s Ina Fried got a few minutes with the device today as you can see in the video below.
