This month and next, Sony’s coming out with a colorful line of laptops that seem to be aimed at hipsters and the youth market, and will start at $1,350.
No, you’re not in a time warp. I’m serious. I said Sony’s aiming a $1,350 laptop at the digerati. This year. Winter 2006. Blu-ray drive (and Bluetooth) apparently not standard. It’s got a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, a gig of memory, and a 5400 rpm 120GB hard drive. And an Intel graphics processor with shared video RAM. Intel! Shared!
This, the same year you’ll be able to buy a perfectly fine, basic WiFi-enabled
laptop for half that price at every big-box retailer across the land
(and over the Internet). This, the same year that Apple Computer’s
MacBook starts at $1,099.
Adding to the weirdness, national retailers will carry only the black
and gray VAIO C models. If you want color, you’ll have to buy direct
from Sony.
There are so many things wrong with this package, it makes one wonder how serious Sony is about this laptop business.
