But in that same interval, earth lost 100 million hectares of tropical forests, and 90% of its wetlands, according to a United Nations global assessment. Nearly a tenth of the planet’s plants and animals face great danger. Next year, Kunming will host the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Can the international community agree on a plan for preserving global biodiversity? And what should that plan include?
