Who is Huntington Bank good for?

Huntington Bank could be a great option for anyone looking to keep all deposit accounts and other banking needs under one roof, as it offers a wide range of products and services. The bank also frequently offers intro bonuses for opening one of its eligible checking accounts.

    Who shouldn’t use Huntington Bank?

Huntington Bank isn’t ideal for those that live outside of the 14 states where its branches are located—namely, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The reason is that its banking services aren’t open to those outside of these states. And some account types, such as CDs, must be opened-in branch.

    Pros

    • Excellent variety of products and services
    • Customer-friendly overdraft fee policies
    • Regularly offers new account sign-up bonuses

    Cons

    • Banking products are only available in 14 states
    • Savings rates on some accounts are quite low compared to competitors
    • Relatively few competitive CD options

And even if you overdraft by more than $50, you’ll have 24 hours to fix the issue before you’re charged a fee.

    Savings account

Huntington Bank offers two savings accounts: a Premier Savings Account (offering minimal APY) and a Relationship Savings (with competitive APY).

The latter is a decent option for those on the hunt for a respectable high-yield savings account. Savers can earn up to a 3.29% APY for balances between $5,000 and $2 million (though you must have a Huntington Perks Checking account for that top rate, otherwise the APY is 3.24%).

    Money market accounts

Money market accounts are essentially a cross between checking and savings accounts. It’s an often high-yield account that comes with easier access to your money (through check-writing privileges, for example). But depending on the bank, your monthly transactions may be limited.

Huntington Bank offers three different MMAs. Its Relationship Money Market Account offers APY rates that make it competitive with some of the best money market accounts around. And its SmartInvest MMA comes with even higher APY maximums—though the qualification requirements are significantly more tough.

For those looking for an MMA for their retirement funds, Huntington offers a Money Market IRA, too.

Remember, the APY you receive may depend on where you live.

    Certificates of deposit

You can open either a regular fixed-rate CD or a jumbo fixed-rate CD with Huntington Bank. Both account types come in standard and promotional flavors. Standard rates are bland, but promo rates are near the top of the market—though, similar to other Huntington Bank deposit accounts, the interest you earn will vary based on your location.

To open a regular CD, you’ll need to deposit at least $1,000—while jumbo CDs require at least $100,000. Huntington also offers IRA CDs, though their return rates aren’t disclosed.

The Huntington Bank platform and customer support

Customers can access account information through desktop online banking or via mobile apps. The mobile app is well-rated, receiving 4.5 stars out of 5 on Google Play out of more than 66,000 reviews and 4.8 stars out of 5 on Apple App Store out of roughly 245,000 ratings.

    Is Huntington Bank secure?

Huntington Bank uses several security measures to ensure that your personal data stays safe. It implements fingerprint or face identification to log into the mobile app; it uses security challenge questions and security tokens; it scrambles information with 128-bit SSL encryption; it uses firewalls.

While no financial institution is entirely impervious to security threats, Huntington Bank does everything you’d expect of a bank.

    Huntington Bank user reviews

Banks are notorious for low online ratings. That’s likely because an unsatisfied customer is more vocal than a satisfied one. With that in mind, Huntington Bank has a 1.4 star rating out of 5 on Trustpilot as of this writing.

Customers comment negatively about occasional nickel-and-diming, as well as random check holds and blocking access to funds.

Other forums, like Reddit, offer positive reviews of the bank. They like the overdraft fee 24-hour grace period and the functionality of the online banking and mobile app.

Is Huntington Bank right for you?

If you are looking for a great traditional bank with a wide range of products and services, Huntington Bank is an excellent choice. It offers great relationship perks, 24-hour grace periods on overdraft fees, and more.

Remember, you must live in one of the 14 states where the bank operates to take full advantage of its options. And Huntington Bank isn’t the undisputed winner among high-APY accounts, either. If your primary goal is to find the most impressive return for your deposit account balances, try looking elsewhere.
