It’s cushy and plush, offering great hip and shoulder pressure relief for side sleepers. 

Our tester Courtney is 29, in the average weight category (130-220 pounds), and sleeps on her stomach and side. She found this mattress to be great for side sleepers, rating it a 5 out of 5 for pressure relief. She said, “The mattress forms to my body nicely and my spine is aligned with no significant pressure on my shoulders or neck.” 

While this model performs well for side sleeping, Courtney thinks it’s great for back and stomach sleepers as well. She said, “There is a great layer of cushion on this mattress: it’s like marshmallow fluff. It’s very comfortable.” Courtney gave this mattress a 5 out of 10 for overall firmness. Our tester, Addie, a 25-year-old side sleeper in the lightweight category (130 pounds or less) is a big fan of the Midnight Helix Luxe for its cloudlike cushioning, which she says feels great while side sleeping. 

During our mattress bounce test for this model, the ball bounced 10 inches, earning it a 3 out of 5 on our bounce scale. We define this as an average bounce that falls between 9 and 11.99 inches. This mattress isn’t too bouncy but, at the same time, won’t lock you into the bed. A springier and more responsive mattress, like the Saatva Classic, may be preferred by folks who change sleep positions frequently (combination sleepers).  

When testing the pressure relief while side sleeping, Addie said that as someone with shoulder injuries, she felt little pressure on her shoulder, as the mattress relieved most of the ache. “As a side sleeper, I find this very comfortable. I could snooze right here,” she said. While testing for pressure relief on her back, Addie noticed that her body stayed aligned without sinking in any spots. One of our favorite models from the Saatva review process, the Classic Luxury Firm is a firm innerspring mattress that offers a flexible, durable feel without compromising cushion and comfort. This one has an overall 8 out of 10 firmness rating, so it’s definitely best for those who want a supportive bed.  

This is a very responsive mattress with a high bounce, which we define as a bounce of more than 15 inches. During the bounce test, the ball bounced 23 inches, earning the Classic a 5 out of 5 in this category. This mattress may feel more flexible and returns to its original shape quickly. 

After analyzing the edge support, our tester, Addie, gave it a 3 out of 5 rating. She felt that she might easily roll off the mattress and didn’t feel held in place. Addie wrote, “Lying on my back felt more secure than lying on my side. There wasn’t much sinking, but it didn’t feel supportive on the edges.” So, if you tend to sleep on the very edge of the bed, you may prefer the Nectar Luxe Memory Foam. 

Her experience was confirmed by our sinkage test: the mattress sank only 1 inch when Addie sat down on it. This firmness may be preferred by folks looking for secure spinal alignment, such as back or stomach sleepers. Courtney tested this mattress, rating it a 4.5 out of 5 for motion isolation. She noted that there was barely any movement during the motion tests, as she sat down, shifted positions, and got up. “Whereas most other mattresses caused the balls to move more during big adjustments, this one did not,” she said. 

Courtney also felt that this mattress has excellent cooling capabilities. She says, “While on the mattress, I did not feel it get warmer, it actually felt cool. It was cool to the touch upon getting up.” The Nectar Luxe Memory Foam earned a 5 out of 5 after undergoing the cooling gun test. It returned to its baseline temperature in only three minutes and fifteen seconds, one of the fastest on our list.  

This model is also a good option for side sleepers, our tester said. “I feel fairly comfortable and mostly even. My hips sink slightly more than the rest of my body but not by much.” Courtney said there was also slight pressure in her lower back, but nothing that would hinder her ability to fall asleep. She rated it a 4 out of 5 for pressure relief on her side.  

As this is a memory foam mattress, it’s not the bounciest, most responsive option on this list. This Nectar bed received a 2 out of 5 rating on our bounce test, which is to be expected for memory foam. That said, if you want a more responsive bed that makes shifting positions easy, we recommend the Saatva Classic. 

Courtney preferred the pressure relief this mattress offered while lying on her stomach, one of her ideal ways of sleeping, saying, “My chest area feels secure, and I don’t feel excessive sinking anywhere. There is no discomfort in my back/hips/shoulders.” So, stomach sleepers may be in luck with this bed.

This mattress offers four firmness options: softer, luxury firm, firmer, and plus. Our tester, Courtney, tried The WinkBed Luxury Firm, noting that it did well at isolation motion, making it a solid choice for couples and co-sleepers. 

Courtney recorded scores of 5 out of 5 for both the motion test and the couple’s motion test. “There was only an absolute minimum movement of the balls when I got on the mattress, during some transitions, and while getting off the mattress. During a more substantial body shift, there was some movement of the balls, but that may be due to the shifting of the bed frame rather than the mattress.”  

When testing the bed with a partner, Courtney barely felt their movements, whether they shifted positions or moved on and off the bed entirely. This mattress is great for folks who may be sensitive to their partner’s movements or are light sleepers. 

When undergoing the bounce test, the ball bounced only 1 inch, earning a 1 out of 5 in this category. As a result, this mattress has pretty low bounce, which isn’t necessarily a negative. Beds with extremely low bounce can be good for folks who co-sleep with other people or pets, as it reduces motion. 

This mattress received a 4.5 out of 5 for the cooling gun test. Before Courtney got into bed, it was 69.4 degrees. After exiting, the mattress was 74.5 degrees, staying very temperature neutral. She said, “The mattress did not feel like it got warmer as I sat on it. It also did not feel warmer to the touch after I got off it.” This is among the most temperature neutral mattresses we tested, making it a great pick for folks who sleep relatively temperature neutral or plan to share their bed.

The Saatva Rx mattress was originally designed with back sensitivity in mind. Though we recommend talking with a doctor before buying a bed for back pain, the Rx does score well on pressure relief. After some testing, our team also found that this mattress may be suitable for people who like to sleep on their side, thanks to its moderate firmness level. 

During the bounce test for the Saatva Rx mattress, the ball bounced 10 inches, which is a relatively average result. In other words, this model is only moderately responsive, earning the  Saatva Rx mattress a 3 out of 5 for bounce. Since this mattress has an average amount of bounce, it’s pretty good for ease of movement (such as getting in and out, shifting positions, and more). This is especially helpful for folks who need to change positions often due to aches and pains.  

After this model went through the couple’s motion test, Addie rated the Saatva Rx a 4 out of 5 in this category. While the movement she felt was subtle, Addie did notice our other tester move and shift on the bed, even though she wore a blindfold and noise-canceling headphones. However, the motions weren’t overly disturbing, so folks sleeping with someone else in the bed are likely to still appreciate this mattress. 

While Addie tested the pressure relief of the Saatva Rx while lying on her stomach, she noticed ample support. “It feels very nice. I feel slight pressure on my lower back and hips, but no pressure on the upper part of my body like my chest,” she said, giving a 5 out of 5 for pressure relief. “My body feels equally supported. I feel nice and caressed by the mattress.”  

The overall firmness rating of the Saatva Rx mattress is a 6 out of 10, meaning that this model is a moderately firm mattress. Addie observed that “When lying on the edge, I feel nice and supported. My weight feels more evenly distributed when lying on my back. On my side, the mattress sinks in more.” So, those looking for a firmer option may prefer the Saatva Classic. 

Best Hybrid Luxury Mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Our Thoughts on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid 

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is our favorite luxury hybrid, combining supreme response comfort foam and variflex transition foam with 8-inch individually cased coils. Our tester, Kate, a 25-year-old side sleeper in the lightweight category, loved this bed’s motion isolation and edge support. 

This mattress scored a 4 out of 5 on the motion test. There was only slight movement by the bouncy balls when Kate got in and out of bed. “They settled quickly and hardly moved when I would roll slightly towards the container,” she said. Kate only noticed the balls wiggle when she would change positions more actively, such as slamming her hips as she turned on her side. 

Kate couldn’t feel her co-tester getting in and out of the bed but could feel her partner’s movement when they were in bed. After the original motion test’s high score, she was surprised by these results, giving the Signature Hybrid a 3 out of 5 on the couple’s motion test. So, if your partner tends to move around a lot in their sleep, this may not be the most ideal pick. Instead, we’d suggest opting for the WinkBed mattress. 

However, this bed offered amazing edge support. Kate gave the Signature Hybrid a 5 out of 5 in this category, feeling that the mattress was comfortable even on the edges, and that it assisted her as she stood up. She says, “I didn’t feel like I was being spring out towards the wall, but the edge gave enough lift around my thighs that it was easy to get up.” When she was on her side, she felt like she could lie there all night and not fall off.  

While lying on her back, Kate’s head and shoulders felt more elevated than her hips. “I think this would be great for an average weight back sleeper, but for someone who is light weight and needs more sinkage in the shoulder area, it’s not for them.” We recommend this mattress for folks of average (130-220 pounds) or of higher weight (220 pounds or more), who may find the support a good fit for their needs.

Best Luxury Mattress for Back Sleepers: Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm 

Our Thoughts on the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm 

The Nolah Evolution mattress has three firmness levels: plush, luxury firm and firm, so there are plenty of options for back sleepers Courtney tested the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm, the brand’s middle level of support. It’s 15 inches tall, which is about 3 inches taller than standard mattress height. This height gives the Nolah Evolution a plush and more high-end feel, while also supporting folks who prefer to sleep on their back. 

While undergoing the mattress bounce test, the ball bounced 12.5 inches, earning it a 4 out of 5 on our bounce height scale. We define this as a moderate bounce height (which falls anywhere between 12 to 14.99 inches). Moderate bounce in a mattress is good for folks who move around a good bit and who don’t like feeling “stuck” or too secured while lying on their mattress. 

The starting depth of this mattress is 15 inches, and Courtney sank 4 inches when undergoing the edge sinkage test. This is considered to be only minor sinkage, at a depth of 3.1 to 4.6 inches, scoring it a 4 of out 5. More sinkage may be preferred by side sleepers who want to feel cushioned, and less sinkage may be preferred by sleepers who have a higher weight for better spinal alignment.  

Courtney described her experience, saying, “I am sinking in, but it is comfortable, the mattress is cradling me. When standing up, I felt like the dismount was about 75% slide and 25% spring. I was already sunken in, so I felt like it was easy to slide off.” 

When lying on her side or back near the edge of the bed, Courtney found both positions to be comfortable, giving a 4 out of 5 rating. She did not feel that she was going to fall off the side of the bed. She reported: “Feeling supported and do not feel like I am going to topple over. All positions feel good… this mattress contours my body nicely.”  

Other Luxury Mattresses We Tested 

We tested dozens of luxury mattresses hands-on in our lab. Here are a few that we considered but didn’t make our list of top picks, and why.  

• Our tester found Brooklyn Bedding’s Aurora Luxe Cooling mattress to be firmer than described, making it more of a firm bed than medium firm, which may not be desirable for side sleepers or those of a lighter weight.  
• Bear’s Elite Hybrid didn’t isolate motion as well as other mattresses we tested. Our tester noticed her co-tester’s movements when they got in bed and as they moved around once lying down. 

How We Tested and Selected the Best Luxury Mattresses 

We tested and evaluated luxury mattresses and scored them on a scale of 1-5 for factors such as motion control, cooling aspects, firmness, bounce, edge support, and value. Our testers evaluate the products based on their own individual experiences and preferences. We then review their testing feedback and data to share our findings and recommendations. 

Pressure Relief 

When evaluating pressure relief, we first look at a mattress’s construction, materials, and firmness level. We then use a pressure map, which displays where pressure builds on a tester’s body by using heat-mapping technology during their evaluation. Not only do we gather this objective data, but the tester also provides their own description of where they might feel pressure when trying out the mattress. 

Cooling 

When evaluating the temperature control of a mattress, we utilize a thermal gun to record the temperature of the mattress before and after the tester lies on it for two minutes. Our testers also provide feedback on how warm or cool they feel, so we compile both objective and subjective data. Then, we also measure how long it takes for the mattress to return to its original temperature.    

Motion Isolation 

When examining a mattress’s motion isolation capabilities, we run both a motion isolation test and a couple’s motion test. The motion test involves measuring the movement of balls in a container at one end of the bed as the tester completes several movements.    

For the couple’s motion test, one tester wears noise-cancelling headphones and a blindfold, while the other tester completes a series of movements. The blindfolded tester then reports any motions they felt throughout the experiment. 

Bounce 

When testing for bounce, we drop a medicine ball from a 6-foot height onto the mattress. We then measure how high the ball bounces into the air after hitting the mattress. If the ball bounces less than 5.99 inches, the mattress is considered to have an extremely low bounce. If the ball bounces over 15 inches, it’s considered to have an extremely high bounce. Between 9 and 12 inches of bounce is an average amount of bounce. 

Edge Support 

During our edge support test, we place weight plates on the mattress edge and then measure how much it sinks. We also test each mattress using a set of stacked plates that are approximately 130 to 150 pounds (replicating a real person’s weight), then measuring how much the mattress sinks. If our tape measure shows that a mattress sinks 7.9 inches or more during this test, we give it a 1-star rating. If the mattress sinks less than or equal to 3 inches, it earns a 5 out of 5. Finally, our mattress testers also sit on the edge of the mattress and provide a subjective rating out of 5 on how supported they feel.
