AG1 as best greens powder

What Testers Liked About AG1 Next Gen

Our tester Kayla rated the mixability of AG1 a 5 out of 5, writing: “Using a shaker bottle, I mixed one scoop of AG1 with about 10 ounces of cold water and shook for 60 seconds. This product by far has the best solubility out of all the greens powders I have tried. The product was completely dissolved with zero clumps.” She also noticed there wasn’t an excessive amount of foam after shaking for a minute. This is an improvement from their former formula, which did tend to settle in the bottle, our tester said.

Kayla describes the taste of AG1 as “mild and earthy, with subtle hints of sweetness of vanilla that help to soften the greens flavor.” She rated the taste a 5 out of 5, and the sweetness a 3, saying, “It’s not overly sweet, and I can taste the stevia slightly, but it’s not overwhelming. I honestly love the taste of the new formula and think it has improved overall.”

Compared to the classic formula, this drink is also less bitter, according to Kayla. She added that the texture is not gritty or chalky, and is more like a light juice than a thick smoothie, making it easy to drink quickly.

Overall, Kayla says that AG1’s new next gen formula keeps the great taste and convenience that she loves, but now includes clinically studied probiotics, more bioavailable vitamins, and extra minerals to close nutrient gaps.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

AG1 is expensive–it costs $99 for one month as of this writing, though it is cheaper if you receive a monthly subscription. Otherwise, each serving is $3.30. Many other options on our list cost about half of this, so it’s up to you to decide if AG1 fits well within your budget.

What Testers Liked About 1st Phorm Opti-Green 50

Our tester Paige rated her first impression of 1st Phorm Opti-Green 50 a 5 out of 5, specifically noting the pleasant green color of the packaging. She also appreciated the mixability of this greens powder, giving it a 5 out of 5 rating. “This product dissolves really well in the recommended amount of water,” she said, adding, “It is a lot of powder for a small amount of water so it does make the texture a little thicker and murkier.”

Concerning the taste of 1st Phorm Opti-Greens 50, Paige awarded this powder a 5 out of 5. “The flavor is chocolate and I surprisingly really enjoy it,” she said. “It is not too sweet or too bitter; the flavor is very balanced. There’s also no weird earthy grass taste like with other greens powders.”

Overall, Paige thinks this chocolatey option could be a great way to curb a sweet tooth first thing in the morning or right before bed.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

Paige’s biggest concern about 1st Phorm Opti-Greens 50 is the cost, which for the travel-friendly packets, comes to $2.33 per serving. “I would have to see how well this product benefitted my digestion long-term since the price is a little high per serving,” Paige said. “But the taste and quality of the ingredients definitely add to the value.”

  • Our thoughts: Swolverine’s Greens + Reds blend that packs a nutritional punch and tastes great
  • Sweeteners/Additives: Stevia
  • Who it’s for: People looking for an “all-in-one” blend that contains greens superfoods, digestive enzymes, and more
  • What makes it different: The “Reds” blend of beetroot, goji berry, açaí, and blueberry help people fill nutritional gaps and reach their daily micronutrient intake with one convenient powder supplement

Pros

  • Combines organic greens and antioxidant-rich reds for a comprehensive “all-in-one” nutritional approach
  • Third-party tested
  • Naturally sugar-free

Cons

  • More expensive than other options
  • Only one flavor option available

Swolverine’s Greens + Reds powder packs a serious nutritional punch by combining the health benefits of green superfoods, like spirulina, wheatgrass, and chlorella, with red fruits and vegetables, including beetroot, goji berry, açaí, and blueberry. This alone helps health-minded individuals cover a lot of bases in terms of reaching their daily nutritional intake, but Swolverine ups the ante by adding adaptogens, digestive enzymes, and more for an all-in-one approach that’s tough to beat.

What Testers Liked About Swolverine Greens + Reds

The label alone impressed us, but our tester Charlotte put Swolverine Greens + Reds to the test to see what the experience of using this comprehensive supplement was really like. She immediately awarded Swolvering a perfect 5 out of 5 rating for its solid first impression and easy-to-understand instructions, adding that it even comes with its own scoop for quick and easy measuring.

Charlotte acknowledged that the Greens + Reds powder left a few clumps after mixing, but awarded the product another 5-star rating for its great taste. “The natural orange flavor was much better than other greens powders I’ve tried,” she said. “It’s something I could easily see myself drinking daily with just plain water.”

After drinking Greens + Reds, Charlotte felt great, reporting that she felt a “nice boost of energy” with no digestive discomfort, unusual aftertaste, or other unwanted side effects. “Overall, I found this to be a really good daily addition to my supplement intake!” she said. “You really get a good bang for your buck with this mixture. Plus it tastes great!”

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

It’s common to expect a premium price point if you’re purchasing premium ingredients, and Swolverine is no exception to that. At $60.00 per container, each scoop winds up costing $2.00, making it one of the more expensive options on our list.

If you have a budget for this type of quality, we couldn’t recommend Swolverine more highly, but the more cost-conscious individuals may balk at the price and prefer less expensive options.

Cons

  • Does not contain probiotics or digestive enzymes

Sometimes greens powder is distilled into gummy form, as is the case with Grüns Superfood Greens Gummies. These bite-sized supplements offer a unique way to fill nutritional gaps between back-to-back meetings or long travel days. We think they make supplementing feel like a quick treat, rather than another task on your daily to-do list. They’re plant-based and allergen-free, too.

Gruns Gummies as best greens powder

What Testers Liked About Grüns Superfood Greens Gummies

Our tester Carter evaluated these gummies, rating the price per serving as a 4 out of 5: “These gummies are priced under $2 a serving, each of which is eight gummies. It’s a pretty good value proposition given the serving size and quality of the product.”

He rated both the formulation and the taste of this product a 5 out of 5. Carter was impressed by the variety of ingredients in Grüns gummies, naming antioxidants, adaptogens, and pre-/probiotics as some standout ingredients.

“Their ingredient blend includes, but is not limited to spinach, shiitake, wheat grass, acai, chlorella, goji, and more,” Carter says. He noted that the brand has also done clinical tests on their products to verify nutrient absorption, which is detailed on their website. After tasting, Carter said, “These taste like gummy bears, but slightly less artificial.”

He didn’t experience any side effects, rating Grüns gummies a 5 out of 5 in this category. Since dietary supplements are not approved by the FDA, having an independent third-party lab verify that what’s on the label is what’s in supplements such as greens powder is very important, particularly for athletes. Transparency also plays a part. Carter notes, “The company is fully transparent on their testing processes and the fact that they do use a third party, but the specific third party is not mentioned anywhere on their website.”

Gruns Gummies as best greens powder

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

The original price for 28 servings is $79.99 as of this writing, or about $2.86 per serving. It’s one of the most expensive multivitamins/greens supplements that we’ve tested. Even with the subscribe and save discount, it still costs at least $40 a month to consistently have these gummies on hand.

There are two sweetness options for Grüns–low sugar and sugar-free. The low sugar option contains 8 grams of sugar, which is higher than many gummy supplements, which tend to have 3-4 grams of sugar max. It’d be great if the low sugar option was truly lower in sugar.

  • Our thoughts: We love the pineapple and lime flavor of this supercharged blend, which contains green tea and ginseng for more energy
  • Sweeteners/Additives: Some flavors contain stevia and xylitol, others have up to 1.1 g of sugar
  • Who it’s for: Anyone who needs a morning pick-me-up with gentle, organic ingredients
  • What makes it different: Three proprietary blends form a trifecta of wellness designed to keep your skin clear and your life battery at full charge

Pros

  • Third-party tested
  • Vegan-friendly and GMO-free
  • Green tea and ginseng for energy support

Cons

  • Pricey per serving
  • Contains proprietary blends
  • Takes a bit longer to fully mix up

We chose WelleCo The Super Elixir as our best greens powder for energy because it includes green tea for a boost of caffeine, along with more than 40 other ingredients designed to promote energy and wellbeing.

The formulation is divided into three proprietary ingredient groupings designed to achieve different purposes: The gut blend includes 2.7 billion CFUs from four probiotic strains for overall digestive health, the whole foods greens blend has nutrient-dense greens, and the super elixir complex blend tosses in fruit powders, mushrooms, and herbal extracts for antioxidants. It all adds up to a superpowered wellness potion designed to keep your skin clear—and your body and brain in motion.

What Testers Liked About WelleCo The Super Elixir

Our tester Pete stepped up to the plate to try out the Super Elixir. He rated his first impressions of the container at a 5 out of 5, and said he found the instructions very easy to follow. “You just mix 10 grams (two teaspoons) of The Super Elixir in 8.5 fl oz of water or in a drink of your choice,” he said. “The company recommends you consume it in the morning.”

In the crucial category of taste, Pete awarded the Super Elixir a 5-out-of-5 score for the pineapple and lime flavor. “I really enjoyed the taste of this greens powder—the flavor and sweetness are subtle but you definitely get notes of both lime and pineapple, and they do an impressive job of masking the ‘greens’ taste without being overpowering,” he said. “Overall it’s a light and refreshing supplement and drinking it in the morning was a pleasant way to start my day. It’s also great that it mixes so smoothly, with no gritty texture or unpleasant aftertaste.”

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

Pete said mixing the powder wasn’t as easy as he anticipated, and he gave it a 3 out of 5 for solubility despite later success. “After the initial 60-second shake, there were a few small clumps of powder that rose to the top,” he said. However, after another minute of shaking, he was able to fully dissolve the powder. “The texture was surprisingly smooth, there wasn’t any noticeable grit that’s common in greens powders,” he said.

“Each serving provides 10 grams of active ingredients, which is a moderate dosage for a greens powder, but as is the case with proprietary blends, you don’t know the exact amounts of each ingredient in the overall formula,” he said. “I do appreciate the focus on using mostly organic ingredients, the third-party testing, and the lack of artificial additives. However, this price point still feels a bit high for what you’re getting, especially without the full transparency on dosing.”

  • Our thoughts: We like this greens powder’s high doses of organic spirulina, chlorella, and prebiotics
  • Sweeteners/Additives: Stevia, cinnamon
  • Who it’s for: Folks looking for a gut-friendly, vegan greens powder
  • What makes it different: Informed Choice certified

Pros

  • Contains no proprietary blends
  • Midrange cost
  • Transparent labeling and third-party tested

Cons

  • Includes prebiotics, but not probiotics
  • Subscribe and save is only a 10% discount
  • Contains less variety of greens than other powders on our list

Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens earned our pick as the best greens powder with prebiotics because, in addition to containing prebiotic fiber for gut health, it comes in a variety of flavors. A prebiotic is a type of non‑digestible carbohydrate—usually a fiber—that your body can’t break down but your gut bacteria can. Once it reaches the large intestine, it acts as fuel for beneficial microbes, helping them grow and produce compounds like short‑chain fatty acids that support gut, immune, and overall health.

Prebiotics show up both in whole foods (like onions, garlic, bananas, and oats) and in supplements, where doses and fiber types can be more concentrated and consistent. You can also see our list of the best probiotics for supplements that can have a similar effect on gut health.

Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens as best greens powder

What Testers Liked About Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens

Kayla tested this greens powder, rating it a 5 out of 5 for first impressions: “The instructions are straightforward and easy to follow,” she says. She notes that the directions are simple, with no complicated steps or jargon. “The scoop is included inside the container, making measuring easy, however, I did have to dig all the way to the bottom to get the scoop out,” Kayla said.

She rated the mixability of Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens a 5, saying this product seemed to mix well overall: “I shook my shaker cup for sixty seconds, and it seemed like a sufficient amount of time for the product to be fully soluble.” Kayla did notice a little bit of a grainy texture, but nothing that would make her say the product wasn’t mixing well.

Our tester loved the taste of this product, saying, “Overall, this was my favorite tasting greens powder with its fruit peach mango flavor. The fruity flavor was slightly sweet and did a good job of masking the chlorella and spirulina. The mouth feel was smooth, light, and refreshing,” she said, rating it a 5 out of 5 for taste.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

From the price to the taste, our testers didn’t have any constructive criticism of Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens. While online reviews are also generally positive, multiple reviewers noted that they found this greens powder to be incredibly sweet, which was a deterrent to them taking this supplement.

  • Our thoughts: We like that this greens powder supports digestive and immune health with no added sugar
  • Sweeteners/Additives: None
  • Who it’s for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women looking for a safe greens powder that’s gut-friendly
  • What makes it different: It has antioxidants, probiotics, and leafy greens to help round out a healthy diet

Pros

  • Included probiotics and other digestive aids
  • Light and refreshing taste
  • Third-party tested and approved for pregnancy/breastfeeding

Cons

  • Only 5g of ingredients
  • Pricey for the formulation
  • Might not supply what you need outside of these temporary life stages

Pregnant and breastfeeding women know all too well how challenging it is to stay on top of what supplements, medicines, and activities are considered safe during this important season of life. Misinformation abounds, the research is constantly being updated, and it can be hard to know which sources to trust when it feels like every decision you make carries so much more risk.

That’s why Perelel Synbiotic Greens Powder is such a welcome addition to the world of greens supplementation. It incorporates not just a diverse array of greens, but also gut-friendly ingredients at a time when many of us struggle with digestion—and it’s been third-party tested and formulated by OB/GYNs to be pregnancy-safe.

What Testers Liked About Perelel Synbiotic Greens Powder

Our tester Pete knew he wasn’t the target audience for Perelel’s greens, but he gamely put it to the test. Pete gave the powder 5-out-of-5 ratings for both first impressions and instructions, mentioning that he appreciated that the container includes a little scoop. “This powder comes in a small white plastic container with a screw-top lid that opens and closes easily,” he says. “The label features a light teal design with black text, though the print is on the smaller side, which makes the text a bit hard to read. For best results, mix one scoop with 6 to 8 fluid ounces of water daily.”

Once Pete tried Perelel’s formulation, he noted that it dissolved fully within 60 seconds with no further shaking and no visible clumps. He awarded the greens a 5 for mixability, but only gave it a 3 in both the taste and sweetness categories. “It features an acai berry flavor that’s true to taste, you definitely get the acai berry notes in the drink,” Pete said. “The powder mixes well with water. However, as with most greens powders, there’s still a slight grit that’s hard to avoid. Overall, it makes for a light and refreshing drink, and the acai berry does a great job masking the typical ‘greens’ taste.”

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

“This greens powder only contains five grams of ingredients, which is on the low end for greens supplements,” our tester Pete said. “There’s a proprietary greens blend (2,500 mg), a synbiotic fiber blend (2,000 mg) that includes 5 billion CFUs of the probiotic Bacillus subtilis, and a proprietary fruit blend. The fact that it has some probiotics in addition to the fruit and greens blend is nice to have and may help people with digestive issues, but I’m not sure the formulation justifies the price point for this one,” said Pete.

We chose the Kaged Organic Greens powder as our best greens powder for hydration because it contains electrolyte-packed coconut water powder, as well as a long list of fruits and vegetables that support good fluid balance. Two prebiotics—a kiwi powder concentrate and an aloe vera extract—support good digestive health and make all those nutrients easier for the body to absorb. The powder comes in three tasty flavor options that mix easily into a giant glass of water.

What Testers Liked About Kaged Organic Greens (Outlive 100)

Our tester Pete tried the apple cinnamon flavor of Kaged Organic Greens and gave it a 5 out of 5 for first impression. “It comes in a medium size, white plastic container with a screw-top lid that opens and closes easily,” he said. Pete felt the instructions could not be more simple, and gave them another 5 out of 5. “As a dietary supplement, just mix one scoop with 10 to 14 ounces of water,” he said.

“I tested the apple cinnamon flavor, which is a pretty interesting flavor for a greens powder but it tasted pretty good,” Pete said. “It had a very natural flavor profile, the apple flavor really came through, almost like apple juice, and definitely masked the flavor of a typical greens powder. I would have no problem drinking this on a daily basis. The mouth feel was slightly gritty but overall mixed very well for a greens supplement.”

Pete found the greens to be only slightly sweet and gave them a 3 out of 5 for sweetness. As for side effects, he said he experienced none—possibly due to the digestion-supporting prebiotic ingredients in the blend.

Although Pete was impressed by the flavor and formulation of the Kaged greens, he still wanted to add the asterisk that a powder like this one doesn’t compare to a healthy diet for hydration and nutrition. “The total 17-gram serving size here is more robust than many other greens powders on the market, but as always, I’d recommend prioritizing whole food fruits and veggies before relying on a greens powder solely for your micronutrient needs,” he said.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

The powder’s mixability was challenging, and Pete gave the Organic Greens a 3 in this category. “The greens powder fully dissolved in 60 seconds, but there was a slightly gritty consistency after mixing,” he reported.

We selected Legion Genesis Greens as our pick for the best greens powder for smoothies because it features a simple, no-frills formula without any added sugar or artificial flavoring. What Testers Liked About Legion Genesis Greens

Kayla rated this product a 5 for her first impression, appreciating that the greens powder is in a container with a lid to ensure that the product doesn’t spill while traveling. “The product communicates reliability and clean formulation,” she says. “The full ingredient transparency, lab validation, and practical design communicate that Legion Genesis is serious, measured, and made for users who value both quality and efficacy.”

She rated the mixability of this greens powder a 5 out of 5 as well. She followed the instructions, mixing one scoop of Genesis Greens with 10 ounces of cold water in a shaker bottle, shaking it for sixty seconds. “The powder dissolved pretty well, with a deep frothy layer on top.” She didn’t notice any large clumps, though she did notice that the drink was very dark in color in comparison to other greens powders that she’s tried. “Overall, it mixes easily and is ready to drink after shaking it,” Kayla says.

Our tester also commented on the taste, noting, “It reminds me of a green tea with a hint of coconut water. I also get some matcha flavoring, as well.” This makes sense, given that the ingredients include matcha. “It’s not super grainy and feels smooth in my mouth after re-shaking it after sitting,” Kayla says.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

Kayla rated both the taste and sweetness of Genesis Greens as a 3 (meaning a mid-level sweetness). She noted that the product sat for about five minutes after she shook it up and had already started to separate. “The dark color of the drink is a little alarming,” she said. “However, the smell is minty, which was appealing.”

Based on clinical testing, ashwagandha is associated with reduced stress and decreased food cravings that may help users lose weight. Our tester Courtney preferred the travel packet version of this product because of the ease of use. She rated ease of following instructions a 5 out of 5.

What Testers Liked About Organifi Green Juice

“All information on the original packaging is also on the individual packets in case you forget how much water to add,” she said.

“This one is slightly sweet and has a good hint of mint,” Courtney said of the aftertaste. “The back of my tongue feels fresh, as if I used one of those on-the-go tooth brushes.” She gave the taste a 5 out of 5, but because the juice is only slightly sweet, she rated the sweetness a 3 out of 5.

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

Courtney rated the mixability of this greens powder a 3 out of 5, stating that, while the powder dissolved in less than 60 seconds, a gritty texture remained.

  • Who it’s for: Folks looking for a greens loaded with probiotics
  • What makes it different: Uses ginseng as a caffeine-free energy source diet

  • May help increase energy and boost mood

Cons

  • One of the more expensive options on this list
  • Stevia aftertaste off-putting to some drinkers
  • Directions are unclear

We selected the Factor Form Daily Greens as our pick for the best tasting greens powder because the flavor of the greens isn’t too sweet, and there’s a subtle apple flavor that we found to be very pleasant. We love the wide variety of nutrients in this greens powder, which include a full serving of vegetables in each scoop, ashwagandha, ginseng, and lion’s mane.

What Testers Liked About Factor Form Daily Greens

Our certified nutrition coach Pete tested the Factor Form Daily Greens and rated this supplement a 5 out 5 for first impression. “I like that each of the individual packets still includes the full supplement facts panel and that they’re simple to tear open without needing scissors,” he said. “The packaging also feels extremely durable and secure. There’s virtually no risk of accidental tears or spilled greens powder during travel.”

Pete rated the mixability of this greens powder a 5 out of 5, stating that it mixed up in less than 30 seconds and didn’t leave behind a gritty texture.

“The primary flavor I picked up on was apple and it does a good job of masking the ‘greens’ taste,” Pete said of the taste. He gave it a rating of 5 out of 5 in this category. “Overall, it’s an easy-to-drink greens powder with solid mixability and a nice flavor.”

What Testers Think Could Be Improved

“Factor Form’s Daily Greens adaptogen blend contains 625 milligrams of powder total across five ingredients like lion’s mane, reishi, ashwagandha, rhodiola, and turmeric. This means you’re probably not going to see many benefits from this as each is likely too underdosed to make a real difference. Overall, it’s a decent greens powder and may help fill some gaps in your diet, however, at $70 per 30 servings, there are better formulated and cheaper options available, in my opinion,” said Pete.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Greens Powders

We tested and evaluated greens powders and scored them on a scale of 1-5 for factors such as first impressions, ease of following directions, taste, mixability, side effects, and price per serving. Our testers evaluate the products based on their own individual experiences and preferences. We then review their testing feedback and data to share our findings and recommendations with you.

Taste and Texture

Flavor is a big part of our testing process. We ask our testers to provide feedback on the taste, texture, and pleasantness of the flavor for each greens powder. We rate sweetness on a scale of 1 to 5, based on how strong the sweetness is: a score of 5 is best-tasting, 1 is not drinkable. We also consider texture, and ask our tester to record any grittiness, clumps, frothiness, or conversely, smoothness, when describing the greens powder when mixed into a liquid.

Formula

We work with a registered dietitian (RD) during testing in order to find the most effective and safe greens powder formulas. Whether we’re testing a pre-workout, creatine, or greens powder, we look for clean labeling, no proprietary blends, and greens powders without artificial sweeteners or other additives.

Gruns Gummies as best greens powder

We also prioritized products that provided a solid amount of your daily recommended value for all the vitamins and minerals included. So, specifically search for a powder that offers at least 100% of your daily recommended value of vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and B-complex (or at least close to 100%).

Also keep an eye out for any minerals you may want to prioritize, like calcium, magnesium, potassium, or phosphorus.

Mixability

When mixing a greens powder into liquid, we prepare the product exactly as advised by the brand. We then pay close attention to how well the powder dissolves, wanting to avoid grittiness in the taste, odd textures, or residue. We also consider other ways to mix in the greens powders, such as in parfaits, smoothies, or even baked goods.

Third-Party Testing

We selected greens powders that have been third-party tested. Third-party testing ensures independent verification of safety, purity, as well as nutrition label accuracy. This helps to reduce the risk of mislabeling or underdosing. Third-party testing also checks for harmful substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, and more for safety.

For athletes, third-party testing is paramount to knowing that the greens powder they’ve chosen does not contain any banned substances. They should look for products that are certified for sport. Independent testing and certifications help to build consumer trust. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) does not regulate supplements, so it’s vital to have independent testing done to ensure safety, accuracy, and quality.

Value

When considering value, we place a higher value on brands that source their ingredients in America and have certifications, such as Informed Choice.

Benefits of Greens Powders

Adding greens powder to your diet can be a great way to fill in any nutritional gaps, especially if you’re busy leading board meetings or don’t have time for meals throughout the workday. It’s important to keep in mind that powders aren’t a replacement for whole foods: some nutrients can’t be reproduced in powder form—so aim to get most of your vitamins and minerals from real foods and use greens powders as a complement to your routine, not a replacement. Here are some benefits of greens powders:

  • Convenience: Greens powders are mixed in under a minute and can be consumed quickly, which is great for folks on the go. Greens are also available as gummies, so can be a snack between meetings to help provide extra nutritional support.
  • Immune system support: The vitamins and minerals often included in greens powders can help support your immunity. Nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc help to guard your body against infection and keep your immune system strong.
  • Gut health: The inclusion of pre- and probiotics, as well as digestive enzymes in greens powders can be a great way to support your digestive health. And, this way you don’t have to remember to take separate gut health supplements because they’re already included with your daily greens!

“Greens powders can be a convenient way to get extra vitamins, minerals, fiber, and plant compounds when fruit and veggie intake is low, and some small studies suggest they may help support areas like nutrient intake, inflammation, and immunity,” says Sydney Lappe, MS, RDN, Registered Dietitian at Top Nutrition Coaching.

That said, most of the research is short-term and focuses on markers like vitamin levels—not major long-term health outcomes—and there’s no strong evidence that greens powders are superior to eating a wide variety of whole fruits and vegetables.

How to Take a Greens Powder

Greens powder is typically made by mixing one scoop of the powder with water, milk of your choice, or a smoothie, using a blender, shaker cup, or stirring with a spoon. Mixing helps the powder to dissolve fully and generally mixes completely in a minute or less. You can add variety by blending your greens powder into a protein shake, yogurt, overnight oats, or even baked goods to add a boost.

Before adding a greens powder to your daily routine, we recommend talking with your doctor to ensure that the ingredients do not interact with any medications you are taking.

Pro Tip

Pair your greens with one of the best protein powders for a great pick-me-up in the morning.

How to Know if You Should Take a Greens Supplement

Anyone can benefit from a greens supplement, but here are some specific people who might want to consider adding one to their diet:

  • Folks who have a hard time eating the recommended three to five servings a day of fruits and vegetables
  • Athletes or active individuals who have higher nutritional needs
  • Anyone with a busy schedule who doesn’t have time to prepare meals or fruits and veggies for themselves
  • Folks with digestive issues who want to actively add probiotics, digestive enzymes, and vitamins to their diet

How to Find the Best Greens Powder for You

Everyone has different greens powder requirements or wants depending on your fitness goals, dietary needs, allergies, and any health conditions you manage.

Here’s what to consider when selecting the best greens powder for you.

Your Fitness Goals

Everyone has their own unique health goals related to trying a greens powder, whether it’s boosting energy, supporting digestion, strengthening immunity, or simply filling nutritional gaps.  When choosing a greens powder, think about your lifestyle, dietary needs, as well as the ingredients and flavors that you prefer and will enjoy drinking as part of your daily routine.

Our tester pours a greens drink

If applicable, we recommend that you work with a registered dietitian to nail down where you may be experiencing some nutritional gaps. While we always suggest that you start by getting as many nutrients as possible through whole foods, a specific greens powder formula may help you fill any gaps.

Flavors

It’s important to choose a greens powder that tastes good to you, because enjoying the flavor makes it easier to build and keep as part of your daily self-care. A pleasant taste will make your greens feel less like a task and more like a refreshing everyday ritual, helping you to be successful long-term. Finding a flavor that you enjoy will make a big difference in maintaining your healthy habits.

Formula

Greens powders often focus on different aspects of health, such as the inclusion of antioxidant-rich superfoods, while others focus on digestive support with probiotics and enzymes. Checking the formula before you make a purchase ensures you’re choosing a greens powder that aligns with your specific goals and helps to keep you on track.

It’s also best that you avoid proprietary blends that are not transparent, according to Jillian Robillard, MS, RD, LDN. With proprietary blends, it can be hard to discern what quantity of each ingredient the formula contains.

Pouring greens powder

We also recommend that you avoid greens powders with artificial sweeteners and flavors. Synthetic sweeteners can add unnecessary calories to your diet and some studies have shown an increase in blood sugar levels after consumption. Thickeners or fillers can also be unnecessarily added to greens powders–check the ingredient list for rice flour, gums, or other fillers, which may cause gastrointestinal side effects.

“One of the biggest red flags to look out for with greens powders is mega-dose amounts of vitamins, concentrated plant extracts, or herbal ingredients, such as green tea extract (EGCG) that’s been linked to liver injury at very high supplemental doses. The same goes for extremely high doses of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), since these can build up in the body over time,” says Lappe. “I’d also be cautious of products with long proprietary blends that don’t disclose ingredient amounts, “detox” or rapid weight-loss claims, or supplements marketed as a replacement for fruits and vegetables altogether. Overall, if a product sounds too good to be true, it very likely is.”

Third-Party Testing

Third-party testing independently verifies the safety, purity, and label accuracy of greens powders since the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements. This process helps protect you from mislabeling, contamination, and banned substances, building trust and ensuring you can use products with confidence. Independent testing is essential for confirming product quality and safeguarding your health.

Potential Side Effects of Greens Powders

While greens powders are by and large safe to consume, there are some safety considerations for certain individuals. Here are a few possible side effects and who they might apply to. As with any supplement, it’s never a bad idea to consult your physician if you’re wondering how greens powders might affect your body.

  • People with sensitive stomachs may experience mild digestive issues as their body gets used to the supplement. These might include bloating, diarrhea, and cramps.
  • If you’re taking blood thinner medication, greens powders with vitamin K may reduce its effectiveness.
  • If you have a kidney condition, the minerals and potassium found in certain greens powders could put stress on the kidneys.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drink greens powders every day?

For most folks, taking a greens powder everyday should be safe. However, if you experience any digestive unrest, we recommend you take this supplement less frequently. We do not recommend using this supplement to replace nutritional whole foods.

Are greens actually good for you?

While we recommend you get a majority of your vitamins and nutrients from whole foods, greens powder can help. Taking a greens powder can be an easy way to add vitamins, minerals, and other healthy nutrients to your diet. They’re generally safe for most people, however, we recommend a diet rich in whole foods, particularly fruits and veggies, to ensure that your body gets its full nutritional needs met through food.

In some cases, greens powders may contain large amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, exceeding the daily recommended value, according to Jillian. Typically this isn’t a huge threat but there is some potential risk involved for certain individuals. Generally, we recommend meeting your daily nutritional needs through whole foods.

What is the healthiest greens powder?

Gruns is our choice for the best overall greens powder supplement because it simplifies daily supplementation. This helps to replace the need for multiple separate supplements, making it our top pick overall.

Should I take a greens powder or multivitamin?

If you’re deciding between taking a greens powder or a multivitamin, one is not necessarily better than the other—it’s simply a personal preference. A multivitamin may be easier and faster to take, and more precisely dosed. A quality greens powder can provide a wider range of whole-food nutrients with added gut-friendly ingredients for overall wellness. Both can help to complement your diet, but should not be a substitution for whole, healthy foods.

It may be helpful to note that the full benefits of nutrients and fiber in whole foods are lost in powder or pill form, Jillian says. So, prioritize whole foods as much as possible.
