- The Central New York town of Pinckney has seen approximately 300 inches of snow this winter—and more appears to be on the way. With another month and a half of possible snowfall, that could break the city’s previous record of 424.5 inches.
There is, perhaps, no part of the country that’s more ticked off at Punxsutawney Phil than Pinckney, N.Y.
As the rodent meteorologist wannabe calls for six more weeks of winter, the Central New York town is busy digging out from a brutal winter, where it has seen roughly 300 inches of snow.
That’s a ludicrous amount of powder—and it gets even crazier when you factor in that there are just 350 people in the town to shovel it out of the way.
The city, located a little over an hour north of Syracuse, borders the Tug Hill State Forest.
In the past two weeks, the area has seen an average of 50 inches per week.
Just 30 miles south of Pinckney, the city of Redfield has topped 200 inches of snow this year.
As staggering as those numbers are, Pinckney has a way to go before it can claim a record. In the winter of 1996–1997, the Tug Hill area saw a jaw-dropping 424.5 inches of snow.
More could be on the way. There’s a chance of light snow Thursday night as well as the better part of the next 10 days. And an arctic blast is hitting the U.S. currently, which is expect to shatter record low temperatures in many parts of the country.
