While the iPhone 16 and Apple’s AI strategy got the bulk of the attention at Monday’s launch event, the rollout of new AirPods caused plenty of excitement as well.
For the first time in years, Apple has updated its base model AirPods and added even more features to its AirPods Pro line. And unlike the iPhone, the two lines of AirPods have different numbers, which only makes things more confusing, since consumers have been trained to believe a higher number at the end of a product name means a more technologically advanced product.
If you’re in the market for a new set of AirPods—or thinking of putting them on a holiday wishlist—which pair is right for you? It likely comes down to the features you most need (and the price you’re willing to pay).
Comparing features
There are actually two products with the AirPods 4 name, which makes things even more confusing. The base model is basically what you’re used to from standard AirPods, with a few differences, most notably price.
The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Control are the ones that are turning heads, though. The addition of that noise cancellation technology is biggest leap in the product’s base model in years. That’s something that has previously been restricted to the Pro model. They also have Adaptive Audio, Transparency Mode, and Conversation Awareness, which are all features that are also part of the AirPods Pro 2.
The big distinguishing feature for the AirPods Pro 2, though, is the ability for users to also use them as hearing aids. They’ll also have a hearing test and hearing protections included, so if you’ve been missing parts of conversations lately, but have an aversion to wearing a hearing aid, this could be a good workaround.
Comparing battery life
The base model AirPods 4 have the same battery life as the AirPods 3, about five hours per charge.
The AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation will only go four hours between charges if you have that noise cancellation enabled.
As you might expect, the AirPods Pro 2 have the longest battery life, coming in at an estimated six hours with the noise cancelling tech enabled.
All of the models come with the charging case that will let you recharge the earbuds six times.
Comparing price
If budget concerns are your priority, the AirPods 4 base model will run you just $129. Adding noise cancellation for the upgraded AirPods 4 will bring the price to $179.
AirPods Pro 2 are listed at $249, but are likely to be discounted as we get into the holiday season.
One other note: Only the AirPods Pro 2 come with a charging cable bundled in the box. The AirPods 4 will require you to provide your own.
