Not that long ago, Thanksgiving transformed from a day where hardly any retailers were open to one where seemingly most of them were. But, like any other trends, things have started to reverse themselves.

The pandemic slowed down the trend of Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving. And workers standing up for their rights in the years that followed resulted in more stores reversing their policies, with some, like Target, declaring they would never again open their brick-and-mortar locations on Thanksgiving.

Of course, not every retailer went that route. And many grocery stores wouldn’t think of closing on Thanksgiving, as it’s such a food-centric celebration.

Whether you’re looking for that key ingredient you somehow forgot to get in the past week or are hoping to beat the crowds for holiday shopping, here’s a look at stores that will—and won’t—be open on Thanksgiving 2023.

As always, hours may vary, so it’s wise to call first. And keep in mind that blue laws in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island prohibit retailers from being open.
