Elon Musk throws support behind Ron DeSantis for president in 2024 while revealing he just voted Republican for the first time

The Tesla CEO, via Twitter, indicated his support for DeSantis’ expected run for the Oval Office. DeSantis has not yet formally declared his intention to run, but is widely expected to do so—and is likely to be one of the Republican front-runners.

Musk’s support came via an exchange with another Twitter user, where he noted that he voted Republican for the first time in Tuesday’s special election for Texas’ 34th congressional district (which saw a longtime Democratic seat flip to the GOP).

While he said it was “tbd” if he would vote Republican in the presidential election, he said he was leaning toward DeSantis in a follow-up question. (In 2020, he said, he voted for Andrew Yang.)

Musk has sparred with President Joe Biden repeatedly, ever since Musk was not invited to an EV summit that took place at the White House. He has also been outspoken about his opposition to the Build Back Better agenda and the Democratic tax plan that targeted billionaires. In January, he referred to Biden as “a damp sock puppet in human form.” During the pandemic, Musk also famously moved from California to Texas, swapping one of the bluest states for one of the reddest.

As part of his Tuesday election Tweets, Musk said he was considering creating “a ‘Super Moderate Super PAC’ that supports candidates with centrist views from all parties.” Last month, he declared the Democratic party had “become the party of division [and] hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican.”
