Two years ago, most businesses kept their doors open on Thanksgiving.

But one of the many effects of the pandemic was perspective—and that changed a lot of minds in the boardroom. (And, let’s be honest, the worker shortage that came about likely played a factor as well.)

While there are still profits to be wrung out of people who are eager to get started on holiday shopping, most of the companies that reversed course in 2020 are staying closed this year—and offering their workforces a break.

Grocery store employees aren’t as lucky. There are a ton of people in search of last-minute ingredients on Thanksgiving who will be combing the aisle (and praying that the supply chain unkinked itself long enough for sage or pumpkin pie to have made it onto the shelves).

If you’re in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, don’t even bother going out. Blue laws in those states prohibit retailers from being open.

Whether you’re looking to get a head start on Black-Friday deals or are in need of a replacement turkey, here are the stores that will—and won’t—be open on Thanksgiving 2021. Note that hours may vary, so it’s a good idea to call first.
