Amazon looks to hire 125,000 new workers, surpassing 1 million employees

The retailer announced Tuesday it’s looking to fill 125,000 jobs in its fulfillment and transportation divisions. The news comes almost two weeks after Amazon announced plans to fill 40,000 corporate and tech jobs across 220 locations in the U.S.  

The positions offer average starting pay of $18 per hour and up (with some jobs paying $22.50 per hour), and select locations will offer sign-on bonuses of up to $3,000. Full-time employees will also receive health coverage as of their first day on the job, a 401(k) plan with a company match, and up to 20 weeks of paid parental leave.

The announcement comes one day ahead of Amazon’s annual career day—and should the company succeed in filling these positions (as well as the previous 40,000), it will put them on track to exceed 1 million employees. Amazon announced in its most recent quarterly results that it had 950,000 workers.

Amazon has opened 250 new fulfillment centers, air hubs, and delivery stations this year and plans to open 100 additional buildings in this month alone. The company says it has hired 450,000 people since the start of the pandemic and is now the largest job creator in the U.S.

As part of its career day, Amazon says it will offer 20,000 one-on-one career coaching sessions to job seekers, whether they want to work at the retailer or at another company. Current employees are also being encouraged to sign up to help grow their careers.
