It all started with a pun. An especially fervent Star Wars fan on the Internet (whose name is lost to time) looked at the calendar and told another fan, “May the Fourth be with you.” And just like that…Star Wars Day was born.
The day has taken on a life of its own since then. Lucasfilm embraced it, as did Disney. And fans decided—unofficially—that one day wasn’t enough. Before long, it was a two-day event when someone came up with “Revenge of the Fifth,” another pun branching off from the Episode III subtitle, Revenge of the Sith. And now, it’s threatening to become a monthlong celebration thanks to The Mandalorian on Disney+, as the latest meme reworks Din Djarin’s favorite phrase into “This is the May.”
In the end, though, is there anything wrong with celebrating the entertainment franchise that has spread so far and wide? Star Wars went from an underdog film to an empire that covers film, live action television, cartoons, comics, books, music, video games, and more. And its reach into the retail world is even more diverse.
Looking for something special for the wannabe Wookiee in your life or the stormtrooper sympathizer? There are plenty of choices for both:
The ‘Light Side’
Life-size figure of The Child
The Mandalorian’s Grogu (still more commonly known as The Child) has been a fan favorite since his first appearance on the Disney+ program. There are plenty of dolls and stuffed versions of the character now, but this is the one collectors are focused on. Measuring 16.5 inches and duplicated in detailed fashion (including holding the Razor Crest’s silver shift knob in its hand), this is a showcase item that even casual fans will be impressed with. Suggested Retail Price: $375
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge cookbook
Can’t make it to Disney World or Disneyland’s Star Wars–themed land? This cookbook lets you replicate the most popular intergalactic recipes from the parks, from Ronto Wrappers to Nerf Kabobs to a Dagobah Slug Slinger. Just be aware that some of the ingredients might take some effort to find. SRP: $15
The Star Wars Collection by Ruggable
Normally a rug celebrating a science fiction franchise wouldn’t be especially tasteful. But Ruggable’s offerings are actually subdued, and many people likely won’t even notice that they’re walking atop TIE fighters or an epic battle on Hoth. Some are more obvious than others, but that’s the beauty of the 20-rug collection. You can choose what best suits your home. Sizes range from 2.5 by seven feet to nine by 12 feet. SRP: Depending on square footage, ranges from $95 to $689.
The Star Wars Archives
Produced in collaboration with George Lucas and Lucasfilm, these books include interviews with Lucas, script pages, concept art, and on-set photography. They provide a detailed look at the creation of the series’ first two trilogies—the original films and the prequels—that have seen a revival in the past year. SRP: $200 each
The ‘Dark Side’
Furry Wampa rug
Skip the hunting trip to Hoth and show your mastery of the snow beast that (briefly) bested Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back. This 54-by-26-inch faux fur rug brings a unique look to any living room or media room, and you won’t have to worry about losing a Tauntaun in pursuit of it. One hiccup that could mar your decorating: Wampa rugs are so popular that they’re currently on back order through the end of June. SRP: $60
Darth Vader fleece throw
Just because you’re a Sith Lord doesn’t mean you can’t be warm and fuzzy. This 50-by-60-inch fleece throw shows Papa Skywalker flying his TIE fighter through a plethora of red hearts, putting a whole new spin on his offer to Luke from Empire: “Together we will rule the galaxy.” If that’s not big enough, you can pay extra for a 60-by-80-inch version. It’s machine washable and perfect to snuggle under for your latest rewatch of the films. SRP: $61
Jabba the Hut lawn inflatable
Got a deep love for Star Wars and/or a deep hatred for your neighbors or homeowners association? Showcase both with this six-by-eight-foot lawn inflatable of the galactic crime lord and gluttonous slug. It’s great for Halloween. Stick a Santa hat on him during the holidays. Or just put it out on any given Tuesday to make Carole and Eric wonder if it really was a wise choice to choose Star Trek in your recent debate about the best science fiction franchise. SRP: $160
Lego Star Wars Death Star
Legos are great. They’re fun, engaging toys for all ages. And the Star Wars Legos are especially well done. So why does this one end up on the Dark Side list? Check out that price tag below. With over 4,000 pieces, it will certainly keep you busy for a while, though, and you’ll get mini-figures of Grand Moff Tarkin, Emperor Palpatine, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more. When you’re finished, you’ll have a structure that’s over 16 inches high and a bank account that’s a lot lighter. (Don’t worry, there are plenty of affordable Star Wars Lego kits, like the Darth Vader Helmet kit, which costs $70.) SRP: $1,100
