The PGA is joining the growing number of professional sports leagues that are welcoming spectators back to their big events.
The organization has announced that 10,000 spectators a day will be allowed to watch the 2021 PGA Championship, which will run from May 17 through 23 at the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. The PGA says the decision was made in coordination with South Carolina officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We’re excited to welcome spectators back to the PGA Championship this May in a way that is responsible and aligned with current South Carolina health protocols,” said PGA of America president Jim Richerson in a statement. “While crowds will be smaller than originally planned, we know the passion for golf in the Carolinas will create a memorable atmosphere on-course and excitement throughout the region.”
As many as 150,000 people were originally expected to attend the tournament, which would have brought $200 million to South Carolina.
Which ticket holders will be given the opportunity to attend will be determined by their registration group, time of purchase, and available inventory. Ticket holders who are not selected will receive a refund.
The PGA says it will require all spectators to wear face coverings at all times and expect them to observe social distancing. “Sanitation stations” will also be available throughout the grounds.
The seven-day tournament could ultimately welcome the most spectators of any sporting event since the onset of the pandemic. The Super Bowl invited 22,000 fans (7,500 of which were health care workers). The World Series, which lasted six games and brought in just under 11,500 people per game, had a total in-person audience of 68,622.
