Google Stadia Will Launch With 12 Games
Stadia, Google’s video game streaming service, will launch with 12 titles when it debuts Nov. 19.
That’s substantially lower than many industry observers were expecting.
Google, earlier this year, announced 30 upcoming Stadia titles from creators including Ubisoft, Bethesda, Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive Software and Warner Bros.. More than 20 publishers are on board with the service. So a launch lineup of just a dozen could raise eyebrows.
The games are largely a collection of back catalog titles from publishers such as Ubisoft, Square Enix and Take-Two Interactive Software, though many are critical and fan darlings. (Curiously, no Bethesda games are listed among the launch titles, though Stadia showcased Doom: Eternal at E3 earlier this year. That game hasn’t released yet, but other Bethesda titles were expected to be available in Stadia’s early days.)

- Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition
Google says it expects to have 14 games available by the end of the year. Stadia will launch as a paid service this year. Stadia Pro will cost $9.99 per month and gives players access to the highest quality streaming (4K images at 60 frames per second), a selection of free games (Bungie’s Destiny 2, including all expansions, along with a new add-on, will be the first) and discounts on select game purchases. A free model, called Stadia Base, will launch next year.
Google is just one of many non-traditional companies that are looking to become a player in the video game industry. Verizon, earlier this year, reportedly began testing a gaming service on select nVidia Shield set-top boxes. And Apple and Amazon are whispered to be looking at the space as well.
