When IBM’s Watson won Jeopardy! in 2011, the victory set off a stampede of interest in the technology behind the computing coup. Today, what is known as “cognitive computing” is being pursued by some of the world’s leading technology companies. Along with IBM, whose Watson effort remains the most sophisticated and best-known cognitive computing platform1, Dell, Facebook, Google, HP, Microsoft and SAS are pursuing forms of artificial intelligence” (AI). The result has been a “steady and impressive improvement” in the technology’s capabilities.
