Malala Yousafzai Opens Birmingham Library
BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 03: Malala Yousafzai opens the new Library of Birmingham at Centenary Square on September 3, 2013 in Birmingham, England. The new futuristic building was officially opened by 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai who was attacked by Taliban gunmen on her school bus near her former home in Pakistan in October 2012. The new building was designed by architect Francine Hoube and has cost 189 million GBP. The modern exterior of interlacing rings reflects the canals and tunnels of Birmingham. The library's ten floors will house the city's internationally significant collections of archives, photography and rare books as well as it's lending library. In celebration of International Women’s Day, Google has launched a new Doodle sharing the dreams held by women and girls.

Upon clicking the Google Doodle on Tuesday, users will be presented with a YouTube video called “International Women’s Day Doodle 2016: #OneDayIWill.” The video, which was produced by Google (GOOGL), showcases more than 330 women and girls across 13 countries. It asks them to finish the sentence “One day I will…”

“Each new city brought more ‘One day I will’s, more signature dance moves, more hugs, more high-fives,” Google wrote in a blog post Tuesday. “The aspirations we heard were as varied as the women and girls who shared them, from the very personal—swim with pigs in the Bahamas—to the very global—give a voice to those who can’t speak—and everything in between. When it was done, we found that our own ‘One day I will…’s had grown bigger and richer, inspired by the women we’d met.”

Google’s Doodle is inspired by Tuesday’s International Women’s Day, a day backed by the United Nations to celebrate the accomplishments of women. The day is also a show of respect and admiration for women, and aims at advancing women’s rights around the world. It’s been held each year on March 8 since 1977, when the United Nations General Assembly asked member states to make it an international day for women’s rights and freedom.

Google often makes doodles to celebrate major days. The company has developed doodles for holidays, to commemorate the lives of important people, and to support causes. The company’s International Women’s Day Doodle hits on all of those points.

Why the U.S. is losing the global fight for gender equality

Indeed, Google asked prominent figures to join in its video production. World-renowned environmentalist Jane Goodall says in the video that she one day hopes to discuss the environment with the pope. Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and activist Muzoon Almellehan hope that one day every girl in the world will be allowed to go to school.

Now Google wants other women around the world to share their own dreams. The company has created a hashtag, #OneDayIWill, and asked that women and girls share their dreams. The effort is picking up steam: several women are posting their dreams each minute.
