Robert Durst, the subject of HBO’s documentary miniseries The Jinx, is reportedly being sued by the family of his missing ex-wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.
Ann McCormack, Kathleen Durst’s 101-year old mother, and her three daughters filed the lawsuit Monday, the New York Times reports. The complaint demands $100 million, which is Durst’s estimated net worth.
Kathleen Durst disappeared in 1982, and Robert Durst obtained a divorce in 1990 claiming abandonment. Even though Kathleen’s death has never been established, the McCormack family is suing him on the grounds that he violated their right to sepulcher, which means he prevented them from giving Kathleen a proper burial.
Durst’s lawyers had advised him against participating in The Jinx, which investigated long-held claims that he is responsible for Kathleen’s death as well as the 2000 murder of Susan Berman, who was Durst’s spokesperson following his wife’s disappearance.
Durst, the son of New York City real estate mogul Seymour Durst, was arrested on a gun charge the day before the final episode of The Jinx aired. He is currently in a New Orleans prison awaiting his Dec. 17 sentencing, which could result in more than five years in prison. He will then be transferred to Los Angeles where he’s charged with Berman’s murder.
Neither party’s lawyer could immediately be reached for comment.
