Osorio — ZUMA Press/Corbis United Airlines passengers use the kiosk machines at the economy check-in area of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as flights were delayed due to a stoppage on July 8. United Airlines flights around the world were temporarily suspended due to “automation issues,” according to an air traffic control system advisory notice. The airline told CNBC the problem affected about 3,500 flights worldwide.

An expert in trading systems told Fortune that a failed systems upgrade likely forced the NYSE to shut down and ended up disconnecting the entire NYSE for exactly 3 hours and 38 minutes.
