Mercedes-Benz is recalling almost 1 million older vehicles worldwide over concerns about their braking systems.

A total of 993,407 vehicles are being recalled, according to reports that cite Germany’s federal transport authority.

The company confirmed the recall in a statement to Fortune on Monday.

Mercedes said it had identified a fault with the brake boosters on certain models that were manufactured several years ago.

The defect means that sudden braking in affected vehicles could lead to mechanical damage and, in rare cases, an increased risk of accident or injury, according to the BBC.

“As part of its commitment to safety, Mercedes-Benz has decided to contact the owners of potentially affected vehicles,” a spokesperson for the carmaker told Fortune in an email.

“We will start with the recall process immediately. This will involve inspecting potentially affected vehicles and, depending on the results of the inspection, replacing the parts where necessary. Until the inspection takes place, we ask our customers not to drive their vehicles.”

Which cars have a recall?

Mercedes said the defect was present in certain ML and GL-Class SUVs, as well as some R-Class minivans.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between 2004 and 2015.

What to do if your car is on the list

Mercedes said it will contact the owners of affected vehicles.

The recall is happening with immediate effect, so owners of cars with the braking fault are likely to hear from the company soon.

Owners of affected vehicles have been told not to drive their cars in the meantime.

Does Mercedes fix recalls for free?

Mercedes said it will inspect potentially affected vehicles and replace any broken parts where necessary.

Will Mercedes replace the car?

There was no mention from the car company of intentions to replace vehicles where the braking fault is identified.

Last year, Mercedes recalled almost 1.3 million cars in the U.S. over a safety flaw with its emergency call—or eCall—system.
