Dartmouth Tuck launches online executive leadership courses

Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business is launching a series of online executive education courses in response to “tremendous” demand, according to Phil Barta, executive director of Tuck Executive Education. The business school, which Fortune ranks as having the No. 10 full-time MBA program in the nation, is now offering two courses that are available now, according to an announcement late last month.

Courses that are available now include Strategic Leadership: Impact, Change, and Decision Making for Work and Life and Strategic Communication. The classes will be taught by Sydney Finkelstein, the Steven Roth Professor of Management; and Paul Argenti, professor of corporate communication, respectively.

“Executives, like many people, are looking for opportunities that fit into their lives and schedules more easily,” Barta tells Fortune. “These new courses are designed to ensure our online executive education participants receive the very best Tuck has to offer through innovative program designs that accelerate impact.”

While residential courses are “at the heart of Tuck Executive Education,” as Barta puts it, the online classes will allow for more participants and additional hours of instruction over an extended period of time. Tuck also plans to add more online executive courses including one about Strategic Innovation with Ron Adner, a professor of business administration, and a course for women of color with Ella L.J. Bell Smith, a professor of business administration, Barta says. 

“In today’s environment, there’s more interest in online education than ever,” Kevin Lane Keller, marketing professor and former senior associate dean for marketing, said in a statement announcing the new courses. “We have something high-quality and unique to offer, in the form of our renowned Tuck faculty, so we want to leverage that in a compelling and impactful way on these different platforms.”

What to expect in Tuck’s executive leadership courses

Finkelstein’s specialization in Strategic Leadership includes four courses, which take about one month each to complete. The courses are targeted for senior executives. 

“They will learn how to think about strategy differently, how to make better decisions and avoid the ‘thinking you’re right when you’re really wrong’ syndrome, hire and lead like a superboss, and gain insight to their own lives to become more effective, and maybe even happier, leaders,” Finkelstein said in a published interview with Tuck.

Strategic Leadership is composed of 120 videos recorded by Finkelstein, which range in length from 4 minutes to 12 minutes, and 70 exercises. Students earn a certificate upon completion.

The Strategic Communication class is offered through ExecOnline, and will cover organizational and influential communication styles.

“It has immense value for any employee as it provides skills, like how to communicate for influence, that are useful in the middle of an organization and beyond,” Barta says. 

Courses are available now, and students can register for Strategic Leadership through Coursera and Strategic Communication through ExecOnline. Dartmouth Tuck also offers several in-person programs for executives including Building a Successful Diverse Business and its Advanced Management Program, both of which are offered this spring.
