This “triple threat” is why the conversation about artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is changing – fast. For years, much of the discussion focused on what AI might someday make possible. Today, driven by the pressures on health systems, AI is moving from promise to practice, and it’s beginning to pay dividends.

The AI dividend is becoming visible

The 2026 Philips Future Health Index U.S. report shows an AI dividend emerging in American healthcare. The value is not only operational. AI is helping clinicians regain time, expand capacity, strengthen decision-making and reduce administrative burdens that have weighed on care teams for years. And they are sharing how.

Clinicians say AI saves them time every week. Nearly half (49%) report time savings of at least 132 hours annually on average, or the equivalent of more than three full working weeks. More than one-third (36%) say AI has increased their capacity to see more patients, with a median increase of five additional patients per week. Think about the implications of this at scale.

The gains are clinical, too. More than one-quarter (27%) of U.S. healthcare professionals say AI has helped them identify or prevent a potential medical error at least three times in the past three months. Nearly half (46%) say they use generative AI as a professional “buddy” to discuss work-related ideas.

These are not abstract benefits. They represent a clinician with more headspace to think through a complex case, a care team with a second set of eyes surfacing risk earlier, or a patient receiving an answer sooner.

When I talk with health system CEOs about their concerns, right at the top is the well-being of their clinical staff. The pressure on their people – especially since the COVID era – has been immense. Here, we see signs that AI is beginning to offer clinicians relief: 35% report improved work-life balance, 36% report reduced stress and 32% say they are doing less overtime or bringing less work home.

The AI dividend goes beyond clinicians seeing more patients. It is about giving clinicians added time and capacity to care for patients, while also creating space for self-care and balance.

Tools alone do not create transformation

At the same time, early progress does not mean healthcare has solved the harder work of AI adoption. In many organizations, AI is moving faster than the systems around it.

Clinicians understand the pressures facing care delivery and see the potential of AI to help healthcare work better for them and their patients. But AI creates the greatest value when it fits into a longitudinal workflow, rather than asking clinicians to work around another disconnected tool.

A faster MRI scan, for example, can be valuable. But if that scan creates a bottleneck downstream, the system has only moved pressure from one place to another. A new algorithm may surface an important insight. But if it does not reach the right person at the right moment, its value is limited.

In my view, getting this right is not about adding more AI or more tools. It is about responsible AI: orchestrating technology into end-to-end workflows, at scale, with the right governance, training, cybersecurity, transparency and ongoing monitoring. And it means recognizing that human expertise remains central above all else.

Clinicians are clear on this point. More than nine in 10 (93%) say it is essential to keep a human in the loop as AI advances. That is not a call to slow innovation. It is a call to build the trust that makes responsible scaling possible.

Scaling with care

For health systems, the promise of AI is no longer a distant future – it is happening today. And today’s opportunity is to scale those gains thoughtfully, so these early pockets of progress deliver broader, more consistent impact along an end-to-end patient journey.

If healthcare gets this right, the AI dividend can become more than an efficiency story. It can become a care story: clearer decisions, stronger teams, less friction, and greater capacity to deliver better care for more people.
