Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing the tech giant of false advertising and unfair competition after the AI-powered Siri features it promoted when launching the iPhone 16 saw significant delays. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in the Northern District of California, alleged that Apple showed off a smarter, Apple Intelligence version of Siri at WWDC24, then promoted it in ads and videos when the iPhone 16 launched in September 2024. Plaintiffs argued the company’s marketing went well beyond what the technology could deliver, saturating the airwaves to build consumer expectations that these AI features would ship with the phone.
They weren’t. Apple delayed the Siri Apple Intelligence features in March 2025 and pulled the ads, but they had been running for several months by then.
Apple is not admitting wrongdoing. A spokesperson said the company resolved the matter to stay focused on delivering products and services to its users.
Who qualifies
Anyone who purchased all models of iPhone 16 and certain models of iPhone 15 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may be eligible to submit a claim.
The settlement provides a per-device payment of $25 for each qualifying device, though that could increase to as much as $95 per device if claim volume is low. If relatively few people file, the individual payout goes up.
The settlement has received preliminary approval, and eligible claimants will start receiving email notices within 45 days. To submit, you’ll need proof of purchase, the serial number of the eligible device, your phone number, and your Apple Account information.
Apple’s legal troubles over Siri don’t end here. A separate class-action lawsuit led by South Korea’s National Pension Service argues that Apple’s AI delays cost investors billions in stock market losses. Apple is seeking to have that case dismissed.
The company has been scrambling to keep up with tech rivals amid the AI boom, but it still hasn’t delivered on the promised Siri revamp. Apple is expected to unveil its upgrade at its annual developer conference next month.
