Climate activists broke windows at JPMorgan Chase & Co. offices in central London Wednesday as part of two weeks of protests against organizations that support fossil fuels.
Eight women used hammers and chisels to break two windows at the U.S. lender’s Embankment office, the Extinction Rebellion protest group said in a statement. The activists added stickers that read: “In case of climate emergency, break glass.”
JPMorgan is the market leader in loans to corporate polluters, according to research earlier this year by the Rainforest Action Network. Since nations signed the Paris Agreement to cut emissions in 2015, banks globally have offered more than $3.8 trillion of fossil-fuel financing.
Extinction Rebellion has also criticized British lenders Barclays Plc, HSBC Holdings Plc and Standard Chartered Plc, whose headquarters were splattered with red paint last week.
JPMorgan has pledged a 35% reduction in “operational carbon intensity” for its oil and gas portfolio by the end of the decade.
