For many people, Independence Day 2021 is a two-day affair. July 4 falls on a Sunday this year, meaning no work the following day. (Call it a National Hangover Day, if you’d like.)

It’s a holiday that goes hand in hand with grilling, lounging by the pool, and spending the day with friends—especially after forgoing the latter last year. But if you’ve got business to conduct or errands to run, it can be a bit challenging to get all of those things done.

As more and more retailers struggle with staffing issues, store closures are going to be more prevalent this year—and will often take place on a case-by-case basis, rather than a companywide one. Many stores likely will offer reduced hours to manage the issue. And some essential services, as you might guess, will be closed on the holiday and the day after.

Here’s a look at what stores and services will be open as you prep the fireworks in 2021.

Are banks open on July 4 and July 5?

July 4 falls on a Sunday this year, so of course banks will be closed that day. Because it’s a federal holiday, though, banks will also be closed on Monday the 5th. As always, you can use ATM machines to get cash or put money into your account.

Will there be any mail delivery on July 4 and July 5?

Just like banks, mail service doesn’t run on Sundays. UPS and FedEx normally don’t make deliveries that day either—so don’t expect to receive any packages on July 4. (UPS will also close its UPS Store locations for the holiday.)

On July 5, the U.S. Postal Service, along with UPS, will observe the holiday and not offer delivery service. (UPS Express Critical is still available, though.) UPS stores will be open. FedEx plans to offer Ground and Home delivery (though FedEx Express will not be delivered). And FedEx Office Print & Ship Centers will be open both days with modified hours.

Is the stock market open on July 4 and July 5?

Nope. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets are all closed. They’ll reopen Tuesday, July 6.

Which department stores are closed for Independence Day?

In a normal year, July 4 is primetime for seasonal sales—especially furniture. But 2021 is not exactly normal. Retailers and restaurants are struggling to find employees, so many locations will be closed, even if their parent chains are technically open. Others simply like to give their employees a chance to relax. Costco will be closed on the holiday. And many locally owned small businesses that might normally be open on Sunday may choose to take the day off as well, though fewer will opt to be closed on Monday.

Grocery stores know the earnings potential of a good summer holiday. It’s worth noting, however, that even if a store is listed below as open, it’s smart to check with them to ensure they don’t have reduced hours on Sunday the 4th (none are expected to reduce hours on the 5th).
