Good morning, Broadsheet readers! Women are busting up the spirits industry boys’ club, Carly Fiorina is calling for a special prosecutor for the Russia investigation, and South Korea’s first female president is in jail. Have a relaxing weekend.

EVERYONE'S TALKING

•Parked in jail. Former South Korean president Park Geun-hye has chalked up a lot of "firsts" in her country: First female president, first president to be impeached and removed from office, and now, first former president to be put behind bars—well, at least since the mid-1990s.

Park has been arrested on charges including bribery, extortion, and abuse of power. A warrant was quickly issued because the court feared the former president might "destroy evidence" and because her alleged accomplices had already been arrested. She is expected to remain in jail throughout her trial.

For anyone who has not been following the bizarre and fascinating story of Park and her alleged role in a sprawling influence-peddling scandal involving her shadowy advisor Choi Soon-sil, here's a short explainer. This is truly one of those stories that reminds us that truth is often stranger than fiction. Time

ALSO IN THE HEADLINES

•Out-of-this-world record. Astronaut Peggy Whitson broke the record for the most spacewalks by a woman on Thursday after the International Space Station (ISS) lost a piece of cloth shielding that required an impromptu patch job. Stepping out into space for the eighth time, she also broke the record for the most time spent spacewalking by a woman (just over 53 hours). Whitson was the first female commander of the ISS. •Glaxo chief's goals. Emma Walmsley, former head of GlaxoSmithKline’s consumer health division, steps into her new role as the company's CEO on Saturday. As chief, she is expected to focus on replenishing the drug company's pipeline of experimental treatments. WSJ

•A healthy discussion. Melinda Gates interviews Barbara Bush about co-founding Global Health Corps, an organization that aims to train and mobilize the next generation of leaders to solve the world's most pressing global health problems. Cool fact: the group has an all-female senior leadership team. Elle

•Trust but verify. Former Republican presidential candidate and ex-HP CEO Carly Fiorina says that a special prosecutor or independent commission is needed to handle investigations into Russia and the Trump administration. "That's the only way you're gonna get to the bottom of this in a way that everyone trusts," she said. CNN

•Small but mighty. Pam Edstrom, Microsoft's PR mastermind, passed away this week after a four-month battle with lung cancer. "She was very small in stature, but had an outsized personality, a raspy voice, great wit, and a knack for putting stories into perspective," writes Fortune's Barb Darrow. "This was the case not only for clients and her staff, but also for reporters, who by in large trusted her judgment." Fortune

•All talk. On the latest episode of Broad Strokes, Val and talk about The Daily Mail's "Legs-it" cover, Italy's proposed menstrual leave law, and Uber's big news week. Fortune

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: White House deputy chief of staff Katie Walsh is departing the West Wing to join the pro-Trump outside group America First Policies. The Washington Global Health Alliance has named Dena Morris president and CEO. Previously, she served as the director of the Washington, D.C. office for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

•Unintended consequences. Earlier this month, India's government passed a law granting six month of maternity leave to some women. But a new survey shows that the policy could end up hurting working women as a whole: 40% of respondents said they will still hire women, but will consider whether the cost of a potential maternity leave is "worth the candidate," while another 26% said they will prefer male candidates because of the new law. Fortune

•Amal's call. Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney is calling for a collection of evidence of ISIS' violent crimes in order to eventually hold the perpetrators of “the worst crimes of our generation" accountable. Clooney is currently advising members of Iraq's Yazidi community, a minority group that was overrun by ISIS in 2014. Fortune

• Autocorrecting rape culture. Former Vice President Joe Biden started the "It's On Us" campaign in 2014 to in an effort to combat sexual violence on campus. The initiative just debuted a smart new video PSA that points out how easily rape culture can affect our daily conversations. Fortune

•I'll drink to that. This Tasting Table story profiles a group of female master distillers and blenders who are challenging the spirits industry boys' club. Tasting Table
