Netflix will stream the upcoming CBC miniseries adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s novel Anne of Green Gables, it was announced Monday.

The eight-episode series, titled simply Anne, will stream globally on Netflix (NFLX) and air on CBC in 2017. Anne comes from Emmy Award-winning Breaking Bad writer Moira Walley-Beckett (who also created and wrote Starz’s Poppy-nominated (Flesh and Bone) and the two-hour series premiere will be directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider).

“I adore Anne! Exploring and expanding her story with new depth for a new generation has been exhilarating,” Walley-Beckett said in a statement.

Montgomery’s 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables follows Anne Shirley, a willful and imaginative orphan who comes to Prince Edward Island to live with an elderly brother and sister. She soon charms them and attracts the notice of the handsome Gilbert Blythe. CBC also produced the beloved 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables, starring Megan Follows.

Miranda de Pencier (Beginners) and Walley-Beckett are producing under their Northwood Entertainment banner. Production is scheduled to begin in September.
