New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has agreed to a five-year contract extension, he told reporters on Wednesday.
The contract will keep Payton with the Saints until 2020 and will pay him more than $45 million, ESPN’s Ed Werder reports.
Payton said he has not yet signed the contract—though he was carrying it with him in his briefcase—but plans to soon.
“The stability, I don’t take for granted,” Payton said, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. “We’re all fortunate doing something we love.”
The nine-year coach has compiled a 87–57 record with the Saints, though the team has finished with a 7–9 record the last two seasons. Payton coached the Saints to their Super Bowl XLIV win after the 2009 season.
At the press conference, Payton also said the team is working on a contract extension with quarterback Drew Brees.
