Here’s an interesting discrepancy.
In surveys of iPhone 6 owners, only 15% to 20% say they’ve tried Apple Pay.
In a Wristly survey of Apple Watch owners released Tuesday, 80% said they were already using Apple’s mobile payment system.
Moreover, the Watch folks are using Apple Pay a lot: 78% said they used it every week; 14% every day.
And when asked to choose among adjectival phrases to describe how they felt about Apple Pay, 42% picked “It’s convenient” and 51% chose “It’s magical.”
Why the difference between Apple Watch owners and people who own an iPhone 6/ 6+ but no Watch? Benedict Evans may have put his finger on it.
“Apple Pay with a phone is still just taking something out of your pocket,” tweets the Andreessen Horowitz analyst. “Not transformative. With a watch it’s amazing. End of friction.”
Note that the panel of Apple Watch owners Wristly surveys each week is self-selected and can be assumed to have a strong bias toward making the Watch work for them.
