FORTUNE — Apple took the wraps off some very big numbers this morning, announcing its App Store had reached a whopping 40 billion downloads. Nearly half of those downloads took place in 2012. The company also said it has some 500 million active accounts. Developers have been paid more than $7 billion by Apple for sales of some of the 775,000 apps available for iPhones, iPads and iPods.

These kinds of figures are de rigueur these days. But Apple (AAPL) press took the opportunity to put out some additional interesting intel:
- Temple Run was downloaded more than 75 million times
- Backflip Studios and Supercell brought in over $100 million combined for freemium titles DragonVale and Clash of Clans
- JJ Abrams’ Action Movie FX app seems to have been successful “beyond our wildest dreams,” according the movie director
