Sony’s Facebook page makes it official: the Experia Play gets announced on a week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Sony (SNE) Ericsson today announced on their Facebook page the release of the Play, a Google (GOOG) Android phone with a PlayStation controller that flips out. The SE Play will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and take advantage of the new platform’s high performance graphics engine. It will be extremely interesting to see if Sony avails their gaming platform, which seems to run in a virtual machine within Android, to run on other Gingerbread phones like Samsung’s Nexus S.
SE has even updated their mildly gruesome (though I’m getting used to it) commercial with a thumbed green Android roaming the streets (embedded below). Will opposable thumbs (and the ability to turn Android into a hard core portable gaming machine) give Sony a fighting chance against the iPhone/iPod juggernaut? We’ll know more next week.
