Drama is the name of the game surrounding the Academy Awards this year, starting months ago with the back-and-forth on the “Best Popular Film” category (that’s out) to the back-and-forth surrounding who’s hosting (no one, likely, at this point).

For now, the focus is back on the films themselves as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced in Hollywood on Tuesday morning.

Two Initial Takeaways

Netflix is already a big winner with Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, which is tied with The Favourite for 10 nominations each. Despite the Academy’s aversion to the streaming network (NFLX), that conflict is all but a distant memory as Netflix brought the Spanish language film to theaters to ensure qualification for nominations.

Another winner: Disney. Not only did the Mouse House (DIS) garner a myriad of technical nominations for a number of its many films that were released in 2018 (even Solo: A Star Wars Story got a nomination for visual effects), but Black Panther made history by being the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture.
