[ MUSIC ] So I'm rarely intimidated, and I'm a little intimidated by this fantastic group we have up here. I am not a political expert, so consider me a representative of the American people asking you these questions. [ LAUGH ] Okay? So question number one is. Was the 2016 presidential election evidence that America is not ready for a woman president, yes or no? I do not think that this election was emblematic of the belief that A majority of the American people will not vote for a woman president. So, she won by the popular vote. She did. [ CROSSTALK ] By more than two million votes. I think that that thesis has been disproven. A woman can win. Yeah, I would say, we talked about this backstage a little bit, that What is really been interesting about this in the same way when Obama first came up he was the hope and change candidate, was the moment candidate. Donald Trump was the moment candidate where he motivated people based on the rhetoric they were angry and those people came out for him. Mm- hm Katie? I hate that question. I think by asking the question of are we ready for a female president kind of normalizes Like what should not be. Like we would never ask ourselves are we ready for a female CEO, are we ready for a female Congress person? Of course we are and of course America is. She earned the popular vote by more than two million votes as you noticed. And I think America was ready and is ready and Maybe next time. So what do the results say about the kinds of candidates we will likely be electing in the future? We need great storytellers. We need people that have great visions. We need great candidates who can talk to the specific issues. I think it's one of the Missed opportunities we've had over the past couple of months during all the political debates we didn't talk once about climate change. We lost these really important opportunities to talk very specifically about issues. So I'm hopeful that we can learn from a lot of this and that we can invest in those candidates that can be very specific. But Donald Trump didn't talk about climate change. He broke all the rules. I've worked in politics for 25 years, long time, and every single time, every week, he would do or say something where one would expect that that would bar him from further progress. A normal candidate 100 % would have had to drop out a thousand times during this last campaign. And we were just talking backstage. I mean, the idea that say, you didn't pay your nanny tax looks sort of quaint nowadays, for a reason not to be able to serve. I'll say, Washington Post called me one of the prominent never Trumpers. That in mind, of course it's all between us, right. [ LAUGH ] [ INAUDIBLE ] we're not gonna go any farther. That in mind, I think that we all have to do everything we can to make sure he's successful. And I think Kelly, there is a really delightful picture last night that was Tweeted out by Kellianne of her leaning over. The desk with Donald Trump in front of her, and there was sort of a Name this Caption game going on, on the Internet. And the caption from Kelly Ann was, hm, they changed your password? Couldn't be. [ LAUGH ] On his Twitter account. So I do think lots of what happened in this election is Extraordinary and maybe we'll see something happen like this again, but I expect the elasticity of behavior that's allowed in candidates going forward will probably snap back. So he's an anomaly in some respects and yet Not only did social media dominate this campaign, Donald Trump bypassed traditional media as Kelly and Conway is doing right now. And now Katie Stanton used to be the head of media at Twitter and also worked in the Clinton administration, or not the Clinton administration, in the Obama administration in the State Department, when Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State. Katie, how do you look at this, and how do you think that the train has left the station in terms of social media changing politics? Forever and spilling up in this respect. Yeah, it means social media can be used for good and for bad. And I think it's a great way to be able to talk directly to citizens and to citizens to speak directly to its representatives I think the challenge that we have today is that we have, we've talked a little bit about fake news. And the role that potentially fake news has played in this past election. And it's a real challenge I think for a lot of technology companies who belief that they are platforms, and not necessarily media companies. And they've kinda have a foot in both doors, and so They have to really pay attention to this, but at the same time, it's really hard to fight fake news when you have a president elect who leads in fake news. He traffics in fake news. He tweets fake news. Yes. And so it's a very difficult thing to be able to combat. So have the rules changed and You know four years from now are we going to be seeing presidential candidates using the Trump playbook and tweeting fake news and What do you think Anna? I mean I'm in the news business right? So I did political starting 10 years ago and the whole thing was a disruption vehicle where we you know, were faster than everyone else in Washington. And I think what you've seen is that just sped up even more so. But I would say, I really do think I mean Donald Trump is the unicorn. I don't think he's the new norm. Okay. Of how candidates and news is gonna be spread. Okay. So, some of these statistics are just stunning. 18 % of Twitter traffic during the presidential election cycle were chat bots. Automated software that churned out largely fake news and there was a buzz feed analysis that showed on Facebook, engagement was actually higher. Likes, comments, shares on the top ten fake new stories than on the top ten real news stories, and number one fake news story on Facebook was, " Pope's shocking news. He endorses Donald Trump ." So, What does Silicon Valley need to do about this beyond what it is doing now? Twitter, Facebook, Google, other companies. I mean, I think they need to, I mean, I don't work at those companies but I think it's important for all of those companies to understand the The role that they play in the dissemination of news and information that it's hard to ignore especially when you have audience of 1. 8 billion people, that you have a responsibility to be able to make sure, just like you work with advertisers to make sure that they're able to reach the right customers. You wanna make sure that there's a set of truthfulness in the content that you host and that you disseminate. I also think that our media plays a crucial role here. I think reporters and editors are sort of morally outraged by what has happened in this election. Where you could have people's sort of confirmation bias reaffirmed by fake news outlets that would help people sort of stay within the blinders or the beliefs that they. They wanted to maintain. I think going forward, I think the media's gonna play a crucial role in assuring that the role of fake news, and the amplification of fake news, is clearly understood by voters, or Americans, or readers, or watchers. Across the country. I think the storytelling around how fake news comes to be, sort of the content farms, whether it's Russian or American. I think all of that makes for compelling stories, as when you talk about the importance of telling stories. That's interesting stuff to figure out and find out. And You know, I think reporters all really enjoy being investigative in nature, and you know, we'll see a lot more digging into exactly how some of these stories come about, these fake stories come about. [ UNKNOWN ] Just a question on the confirmation bias, you saw it in Brexit, and you saw it in the recent election. There's been this sort of wholesale rejection of expert opinions, How does the news media deal with that now and in the future? I'll take that. I think there is a dialogue going on now and I think it's very public in terms of Of how the news media handled this selection. How we covered it. I think we covered in a very different way and then have any other cycle but i also think I mean polling. It's not like he just said Hillary Clinton's going to win because of whatever. I mean there was 26 months of polling that said that. And so you know there's a whole. The whole industry polling I think is really being turned on its head And so I think four years from now the modeling will have to be different. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Yes, over here? Hi, I'm Ashley Tappan with Insignia. And given 52 % I think I saw was the percentage of white women in America who voted for Trump I think it's important that we hear what they're thinking. And I'm sure that not all of us in this room voted for Hillary Clinton. I really am truly, authentically, curious what's important To the 52 % and I'm sure some of you are in the room. I'd really love to hear from you. I'll take a stab at that. Which is, there's gonna be a lot of unpacking and that's still going on. I think as to- A lot of what? unpacking- Unpacking. as to how President elect Trump cobbled together. For example, the 110, 000 votes that provide the margin of victory in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. We don't have a true answer as to why 52 % of women would vote for Donald Trump other than We suspect it's because they wanted to flip the table and they didn't, the way the system is set up now doesn't seem like there's a fair opportunity. And something that is totally different and unpredictable is better than what they have now. Beyond that 52 % of women across America voting for Trump, 62 % of white working class women voted for Donald Trump versus 34 % for Hillary Clinton, which I think surprised us all. Julianna, what is the danger of Julianna has been for decades, a very smart observer of politics, has worked in Republican administrations. What is the danger of the Republican Republicans now controlling three chambers of the government and making big and very impressive gains all around in this last election. Is there a danger in that? To the party? I believe we're in such no man's land right now, we really can't extrapolate what the policies are going to be coming out of this next administration. He's announced the Congressman Tom Price who has been nominated for HHS Secretary has been one of the long time proponents for eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood. But yet, our President- elect during the nomination process came out repeatedly on a stage with many other Republicans And said what was perceived then to be a remarkable heracy. That he believed that Planned Parenthood was an effective organization that needed to continue funding. So his daughter for example is very strong on these issues. There's no tea leave root in here cuz we don't even know what kind of plant we're drinking. So, I mean this is- But don't you think the danger is what Democrats had in 2008 when they had major overreach and they tried to pass cap and trade and a bunch of legislation, and then two years later they lost the House majority? So the question would be, do they overreach, and that could be damaging to the party, I think. Precedent stands here I don't think Very quickly, who is the hope. Who, name a potential candidate four years from now who you think would be the hope of the Democratic party. Katie. Can I do three? Go ahead, quickly. Laurie Booker, Kirsten Hildebrand and Camila Harris. Camila Harris, okay. I would say a lot of people think that Senator- Elect Harris. Is right in line to run for president as soon as she possible can. Fantastic, Juliane? Democrats are not my speciality. [ LAUGH ] So, hey, I go with Camila Harris, but I'll also say that we're gonna see a lot of conservative or Republican new personalities coming to the forefront in this new age of sort of political unexpectedness and chaos.
