[ MUSIC ] This week Fortune hosted our first ever Brainstorm HEALTH conference to explore how technology is reshaping all aspects of healthcare. But first, we talk to Ariana Huffington about her new digital platform that's focused on corporate health and wellness. [ MUSIC ] Executives Paid for their judgement, and nothing deteriorates faster than our judgement when we're exhausted. It's the cognitive equivalent of going to work drunk. Now, no executive would go to work drunk and celebrate the fact, but many of them go to work exhausted and wear it like a badge of honor. Why do we need to tell employers that this is not just about output? It's about improving the health and well being and therefore the performance and productivity of the employees. And the main part of the [ INAUDIBLE ] bottom line is clear, measurable, and it's time that the employers Realized that this is not a soft benefit, this is something that should be addressed at the CFO department, not just the HR department. Forget brain scans and cancer silhouettes, what about playing fields and broken bones like Wouldn't Watson be a lot more reliable at that. Isn't that billions and billions of dollars of some radiologist looking at things, saying, yep that's a broken bone. Couldn't you start at the low end? You know the funny thing? If you take a CT image, you know, CT's studies maybe 80 images deep right? And really a radiologist Likely doesn't have to look at 74, 75 % of those images, but they need to look at the images that there's something on. And so what Watson can simply do again, cuz we are not gonna replace the radiologists, I don' think, but what Watson can do is say, don't look at these 76 images, look at these 4 images. And by the way, here's these four images, here's the associated Athena health record text that you want to look at, too. And here's what you can look at to make your definitive diagnosis quicker, faster. That how we help. The main effect is a regular hospital room. It will be in the patient's home. And because of the availability of sensors and telemedicine. Patients are going to have an outcry to use this. Rather than having to be hospitalized. We've already been seeing this in emergency room visits. Because people can now, for example, heart rhythm, they get an algorithm to interpret it. They can transmit to their doctor. And that can preempt having to go an emergency room. So the more people experience this empowerment, with not just being able to Generate their own data, but have algorithms to interpret that data accurately, the less need there is on a traditional model. So I think hospitals as they exist today, which George Orwell characterized long ago as antechamber to the tomb, it's still today, unfortunately, [ LAUGH ] there's a lot of problems. We have a much better model incorporating this new technology. In fact, what's happening in St. Louis With a virtual surveillance center can be scaled. Really the question that comes before us is, is this gonna be a local community story like at Mercy? Or is this gonna be remote and outsourced to other countries for surveillance. And hopefully it's not gonna be outsourced. This is really something ideally that would be kinda new. No one's undermining the importance of physicians. And that relationship. But there are better ways to give routine care for non- acute intensive care type problems. [ SOUND ] Best way to treat disease no matter what technology we have, no matter how we can make our T cells do this or do that, it's to prevent the disease. We're incentivizing, we have a system where surgeons get paid to operate. We push to treat. Yet we're not incentivizing to prevent. Mm- hm. We can prevent most diseases in this country, and we don't. Not at all, but we can certainly reduce the rate of cancer by almost half. We can dramatically reduce diabetes, and heart disease if we actually practiced prevention. [ MUSIC ]
