Steve Jobs wasn't the man who many think he was

there's a notion of foot that he, which has been partly reaction to her film partly reaction another book about Steve, Um, that that he mellowed in his later years. I'm curious your take on that. Did he become a kinder, gentler Steve Jobs? No, I don't think so. I think it became a more powerful Steve Jobs. I mean, I think if you look honestly and candidly at the difference between Apple one from which he was forced by John Sculley, an apple to what you see is Apple two has a board that is utterly pliant and compliant with Steve. Uh, and they were looking to him to be the Messiah to bring them back, and so he had tremendous power at that company. But I don't think he was a kindler, gentler Steve. Um, he may have had some more wisdom about how to focus efforts inside a corporation and that he may have gotten, but judging from the way he through certain key members of his management team under the bus, the people who are in part responsible for saving the company the second time around I'm talking about the CFO Fred Anderson and also General counsel Nancy Heinen for crimes really that he committed. That's the kind of original sin that goes back to the same. It's a reflection of the original sin that goes back to the way he cheated, uh, Steve Wozniak out of money that they got for creating the video game breakout. That's the same Steve Jobs, a ruthless character who was willing to throw people under the bus if they get in his way. And one of the things I came across in the story that I did just back in 2000 and eight was that he had concealed his diagnosis of with pancreatic cancer for a long time and then lied about it. Um, and part of that part of the motivation for that presumably, was the sense that Steve Jones was so crucial to the company and that if he disclosed he was sick with a fatal illness without any clear resolution of it, i e. That had surgery had been cured essentially, which turned out not to be true. Um, the stock would decline dramatically overnight. Um, at the same time, uh, you know, he clearly recognized that he well, he made it appeared that apple was a one man show. Um, he recognized that he needed people and worked extremely hard, including by backdating stock options for his team. Um, to reward them and keep them. Um, And what does that say about him? And also, you know, we're surprised the world seems to be surprised that after Steve Jobs died, Apple continues to prosper and grow and do very do very well. He very consciously created the image of Apple as a one man band that Steve was the grand vizier who could see into the future. And he gave orders to everybody, which they simply obeyed over time. A lot of the key executives at Apple came to accept that they resented it, first became to accept it because they realized it was making them all a lot of money because that, I think, was one of the reasons why so many people wept at his demise was that he was singularly the person that we associated with these products over many, many, many, many, many years. Um and that helped to make Apple a lot of money because it helped to make these products warm and cuddly. They were this. They were so associated with this warm and fuzzy character that was created to represent this great performer. And it was personal. I mean, the relationship people have with him seemed very personal, and it's like a celebrity where you feel you have this affinity with them. And if you watch them over time, you know, particularly in terms of growing with the way the computers grew from the Apple, two to the iPad or now the well. Steve wasn't around for the introduction of the I watch, but I think I had a very powerful impact. And meanwhile, at Apple under Tim Cook, the band plays on, the band plays on That's right.
