move over France. Spain is now the world's most popular winemaking country. The Spanish Wine Market Observatory reports in 2015 people purchased 2.4 billion liters of Spanish wine and only two billion liters of French wine. While Spain is winning the popularity contest, it's not taking home the big money. France sold four million litres less but earned three times the money. Spain's wine economy brought home €2.6 billion but Francis Bank eight billion. The head of the observatory, Rafael del Rey, says the situation is frustrating, but we know what we have to do to catch up. We need to sell less wine in bulk to other producers and more Spanish wine that indicates origin. Seeing how Italian producers doubled the prices of their wine in the past 15 years, Del Rey says Spain's wine industry will look very different in 10 years.
