I'm Leigh Gallagher of Fortune Live and I'm here with Tony Robbins the speaker, human locksmith I've heard you called, getting people unstuck, CEO whisperer all kinds of things. Here to talk about lots of things. Thanks for being here with us. It's great to be here. So let me first ask you, you have a book that you wrote, that was the first book you wrote in two decades, and it came out last fall. Yes. It's about investing, which is not something people normally associate you with, but why investing? Well I wrote Money: Master the Game because in 2008, when I saw people losing half their fortune in terms of their real estate, or their stocks and bonds, it wasn't just like a statistic to me. I grew up very poor. And I have access, which most people don't know. I've worked with Paul Tudor Jones, one of the top ten financial investors in the history of the world, for 22 years every single day coaching him. So I have a level of insight and I thought if I could take what I've learned from Paul and if I could interview 50 of the smartest people in the world, the Warren Buffets, the Ray [ UNKNOWN ], the Carl Icahns, I could really add value. So it took four years to do it, but I became the number one New York Times best seller and now it's coming out in paperback today. That's exciting. I wanna ask you, we call you the CEO whisperer because you advise so many CEOs in business. We now are seeing this explosion of entrepreneurship. Everybody wants to start a startup. What are the blocking issues that those kinds of CEOs face that might be different from a Fortune 500 CEO. Well a Fortune 500 CEO, if they're a hired gun, their biggest concern is, do I have enough time? And so they're usually incredibly confident, incredibly skilled. But there are things outside your control, and it's kind of like and NBA coach. If things don't go well, the coach goes. They don't get rid of the team members. When it's a founder CEO, they usually have more confidence. They have more control. And so for them it's really figuring out, how do I scale things? How do I continue to grow at this tempo? How do I keep adding value? How do I keep innovating enough to stay ahead of the game? And so that's where I come in and work with people of that ilk. They say that these kinds of entrepreneurs are famous for never sleeping, go, go, go all the time. They're kind of driven by something that's almost bigger than themselves. Bigger than them selves, exactly right. Yeah, me and Marc Benioff, who's one of my dearest friends, and. I've been on the journey with him for almost 16 years, he came to my seminar three times. Came up and said you're responsible, I'm leaving Oracle, I'm gonna start this company called Salesforce. com. He said we're gonna change the world, we're gonna do a $ 100 million dollars in business. And I tease him now because this year they'll do $ 8 billion on the way to $ 10 billion. And I just watched that journey. But Mark is one of those people like this CEO, that is so driven, he's so hungry. And he's always looking for the edge. Which is why we good friends and I've had the privilege of coaching him for 15 years. Great, I think we might have some questions from Facebook. If you have questions, please put them out there and we'll answer them. Great we actually have some already. We have one alright. Great What are some ingredients to becoming a confident person or confident leader? This is a great question. What are some ingredients to becoming a confident person and a confident leader? Well I wasn't either one of those believe it or not I really wasn't. I had a lack of certainty. If you think about what creates leadership it's vision, It's connection with people, and passion, and it's really truly finding the certainty so you'll actually act. Cuz lots of people have great ideas, or pictures in their head, or goals that they have, but they can't maintain that certainty when disappointment comes. Disappointment either destroys you or it drives you. And what I learned to do is, I learned that the body was the leverage to create that certainty. If I Drop my shoulders, if I breathe really shallow, if I don't know what to do here. When I go on that state which we all can do, you're not gonna have certainty. You're not gonna lead. No one's gonna be inspired. You're not gonna be inspired by yourself. But what I've thought for now, gosh, 38 years, is that when you change the body, when you move, when you breathe, when you use your voice in different way, it literally changes your biochemistry and certainty is there. And when you're most certain There's no guarantee of success, but you maximize your potential. Now I've taught this for 38 years, work with athletes, business people, turn them around. A year ago a woman at Harvard, a professor, did a study called power positions. And she proved that if you stand like Superman or Wonder Woman Literally in 2 minutes the amount of testosterone in your body increases 20 %. The amount of cortisol, the stress hormone drops almost 20 %, and you're 33 % more likely to take a risk. So learning to use your body to- [ INAUDIBLE ] Control your mind. Yes. [ LAUGH ] Or a guy who's sitting back like that. They literally change your biochemistry. I don't just do positions. I show people their voice, their body, their movements, and that's how I've turned around so many athletes over the years, or CEOs. Businesspeople and so forth. You also talk about finding your passion, but making that something not that, something that you are pulled towards, not something that you're pushing on. Like, I really wanna be- You've done your homework, I'm very impressed. [ LAUGH ] My fatal flaw. I really wanna be, I should be interested in this. I'm gonna go work hard and learn all about that. But it has to be organic, right? Well, I don't know, organic is probably the right word. The difference between push and pull is a really important distinction you caught. If you're trying to push towards a goal constantly, you're gonna run out of gas. But if there's something larger than yourself. If there's something that you feel pulled to do because you believe that's what you're made for. Or you believe it'll be so valuable for more than just yourself. That's where energy, that's where insight, that's where passion comes from. And I always tell people, life supports whatever supports more of life. So if you're trying to support yourself, you're gonna get a certain level of insight. If you're trying to support your family, you're gonna get a different level of insight cuz you're supporting more of life not just yourself. You're trying to support your community or humanity. You get insights most people never dream of. That's really been the secret to my 38 years because Those are my real goals. I think we have another question from Facebook? Another question on hiring. How do you hire people and how do you hire smart? How do you hire people and how do you hire smart? I think there's three questions you gotta be able to answer to hire somebody, they're really fundamental. The first one is, can this person do this job? Now, if you're a CEO or someone of that nature. Other people have interviewed these people before you, and if they're in front of you, they probably can do the job. If you're brand new, if you spent, if this is your third interview with them, you've come back multiple times, they can do the job. The more important question is, will they do the job long term, successfully? Everyone's selling when they come to an interview, and so you wanna sell them and get sold by them. What you wanna cover is How do you know if you're going to do a job well done? The first question you have to ask yourself is, does the job reinforce their nature? If you have a problem in sales who's kind of antisocial and they're more in their head and they're more individualistic Can they succeed? Yes. Will they long term? No. Because sales is a social experience. If you have an accountant that's extremely social, can they do the job? Yes. Will he do the best job long term? No. Because their nature is going to be pull them out talking instead of doing the financial. A bunch of work that needs to be done. So you have to see, that the job reinforcement nature, and then you have to see, what are the goals? My family, we have personal assistance. We travel around the world, and become family for us. They're with us 24 / 7, and at one point we had a woman for 5 years, still a great family friend And we went to hire new people, and I went to the LA city personal assistance association, and we went to four people, they didn't work at all and I was trying to figure out what it is and I realize that their goals were to write a script, be an actor, be an actress, and they were excited to get a hold of all my clients to develop relationships, right? So their goals were not in alignment with the job. And then finally the third question, that's a really important question Is even if a person can do the job and will do the job long- term, are they the right team fit? Cuz you can have a brilliant person who destroys the rest of your people, and they destroy your culture? So can they do the job, will they do the job because they're aligned with their nature, it's aligned with their goals? And is their nature aligned with the right team fit for the people that you work with, whether you have two people or 20, 000. Great. One more question? Another one on motivation. How do you keep your level of motivation going, so how do you overcome plateauing? Good question. How do you keep your level of motivation going so that you don't plateau? You know, I've never been a motivator. [ LAUGH ] The media sees me with 10, 000, and they're jumping and celebrating And that's because education is usually boring, and I want to make it like a concert. You know, people won't sit for a three hour movie someone spent three hundred million hours on. And I take people for 50 hours. At Oprah, she said Tony, don't be a Bennett. I can't sit for a two and a half hours anywhere. And 12 hours later she's standing on a chair screaming this is the greatest experience of my life, looking at her own camera. It was pretty cool. But the way I look at it is drive not motivation. If I can unleash your drive, there's something inherently in you that your driven toward to do, then you don't see plateau's because it's you. If I just try to motivate you, I might be able to inspire you for the moment, the week, the month But it's not gonna last. Mm- hm. it's kind of like a warm bath. You should take one. [ LAUGH ] It's useful to have a bath, but it's not enough. Mm- hm. Uncovering what you're most driven to be a part of will keep you form plateauing. [ BLANK_AUDIO ]
