My first aria is a short one from Rigoletto. Um thank you and it really is wonderful to be with you all the former Ceo of Kaiser Permanente, the late Bernard Tyson believed in the interdependence of equity, community health and well being. He championed a holistic approach to health care, asserting that we needed to treat the whole person, the mental and physical well being were one and the same. Bernard believes believes strongly in the key role that social determinants play in health, and he believes that improving the lives of others requires a steady focus on the social and economic conditions that surround them. His wisdom and vision resonate as we emerge from the Covid pandemic amid strains on our public health system, concerns over access to care and worsening mental health, all issues we've been talking about today and one of the central themes of this year's brainstorm health, our global interconnectedness speaks to Bernard's enduring values as well. Bernard is, as many of you know, died in 2019, he was a great friend to me personally and to us at fortune, brainstorm health and we miss him dearly to celebrate his work and memory. Fortune created the Bernard J. Tyson Memorial Award, bestowing it upon leaders who echo Bernard's values and actions promoting social well being as an integral part of human health. Bernard's widow Denise Bradley. Tyson was was going to be with with us tonight to present this year's a word as she has nearly or every year rather. And she even rearranged her schedule to be with us from Uruguay to do so. But unfortunately, she just tested positive for Covid and is unable to join us and we're happy to report that she's doing okay. But the impact of Bernard's work knew no boundaries and that certainly is true for the recipient of this year's Bernard J. Tyson Memorial Leadership Award. Dr paul Farmer who died earlier this year. Dr Farmer saved countless lives and changed medicine with his tireless efforts on behalf of the poor and the underserved. Starting in Haiti treating patients with multi drug resistant tuberculosis and expanding his care and his teaching to other under to people in other under resourced countries leading by example, Dr Farmer dedicated his life to improving public health and access to quality health care in regions that the world too often ignores. In this way. He challenged and reduced health disparities suffered by the forgotten, bringing hope and improved health to the many communities that he touched. We're so very, very pleased to welcome this evening DD Bertrand Farmer, Senior advisor at Partners in Health, founder of the Women and Girls Initiative and widow of the late paul Farmer DD. The best part is thank you so much. Good evening. It's an exceptional for me to receive this award on behalf of my beloved husband. I'm grateful The leadership of 14 magazines for knowing him. I know he would have been humbled by this recognition. It will soon be three months already since paul's sudden passing my Children and I still feel his loss every single day. The outpouring of love and affection from the global community he created was overwhelming. It has been such a personal and collective grieving experience as I reflect on my dear paul's life. I'm equally filled with sadness and gratitude, sadness that his life was so short, but gratitude for the transformative impact of his work, tackling inequalities and injustices in healthcare and other issues a cause that he took On for 40 long years of his life, Paul has been an inspiration to so many around the world, patients and their families, students, colleagues at partners in health and other institutions and beyond. This program is a testament to the fact that paul's great vision for social justice for all will never die as I know that everyone here is committed to use our skills, knowledge, influence power and money to pursue the fight for health care, to truly be for human rights for all. Many thanks again on my behalf and on behalf of course, most people, thank you. MD Chief strategist, P I H I love that title by the way, founder. I'm proud of that first medical director. I wasn't qualified for that, but hey, I did my best. So there there's some titles. Biggest struggles of my life have always been around. The fight for social justice can be better than being an activist. It's something you're doing because you want to do it. It's not a job that you're paid to do. It's something you choose to do. So I think that's a big deal. Being an activist. We really believe that all people have equal value and we can all build healthcare systems that are compassionate and merciful. You know this work that we are so lucky to do is not just about diagnosing the problem but about responding to it. And when you do with even modest resources that return on that investment is incredible. This effort is motivated by love and should be informed by compassion and expert. Mercy. Really? Is it okay to write bravo in the medical chart? I mean, you gotta love this job. Mm hmm mm hmm.
