 JEN WIECZNER: Fortune is proud to unveil the 2020 40 under 40 list. Only this year, we actually have 200 people under 40, that's because we have five different 40 under 40 list. I was in charge of putting together the 40 under 40 list for the finance and tech industries, because we are compiling this list in a pandemic, there were many other reasons that people might have shine not just the size of their business or their influence in an organization, but how also are they helping to combat the crises that we find ourselves in. This year, those who made the list submitted videos of themselves answering a variety of questions. One question that was interesting and telling for those on the finance list was, "What have you learned about business and life from the pandemic?" ADELINA GROZDANOVA: I learned that business and for that matter life doesn't stop during a pandemic. So they'll retrench, look for ways to stand out from competitors, and gain market share. CAMERON PEAKE: That the mantra that I was taught with in crisis lies opportunity really rings true. In one world, we could have sat idly by, but what we actually did was reoriented some of our product and our work to take advantage of this massive societal change that we saw. CELINE DUFETEL: There is more than ever before a need for authentic and empathetic leadership. I think we need to over communicate with our teams and try to relieve some of the anxiety created by all this uncertainty. ZACH PERRET: As time went on, we shifted our focus from concern over the virus to concern over burnout and the sustainability of our team. Due fatigue and constant contact shifting are real issues, especially if folks are juggling kids and families in so many other distractions at home. JONATHAN LEVIN: I actually seeing how all of our employees adapt to becoming school teachers and looking after people and being involved in different projects and work is something that I've been really impressed by. KYLE CORCORAN: Really being able to see my colleagues and my clients, and really connecting with them more on a personal level and understanding what they have to juggle on a daily basis but has often been hidden behind the scenes really that's been brought to the forefront now. DIANA AVILA: If there's one thing that I've learned from a business point of view about the pandemic, is how important personal connections are. Technology is the main thing, and we've been able to stay connected with the team, with colleagues that I really miss having the chance to meet face to face. KEIA COLE: I was terrible about setting boundaries between my work and home lives. I worked as soon as I was already in the morning and often until it was time for dinner at night. I now build in the equivalent of my previous commute time during my day whether that's meditating or catching up on television during the morning or ending the day with a scheduled Peleton ride with my colleagues. BILL PANG: I just had this a very positive effect of making people psychologically more down to Earth and there are more direct and to the point with each other. There is an increased level of understanding and mutual trust. RICK YOUNG: It's really reminded me to focus on the fundamentals, focus on what you can control in your own business because whether it's a pandemic or social unrest or geopolitical issues, there's always going to be something out of your control that can happen at any moment. SARAH CANNON: You can't control things and you certainly don't know what's coming, 2020 has thought me that lesson many times. And so we have to learn to live in the present and not take anything for granted. SUNEERA MADHANI: It's really brought a new life like a new light to real life and the humans that operate businesses and what it takes to really operate and obviously in crazy times right now when everyone's at home and everyone's trying to do their best. PAUL SHOUKRY: A true measure of a leader is not how they perform during good times when everything is going really well, but a true measure of a leader is how they perform and how effective he or she is during the most challenging times.
