[MUSIC PLAYING] DANIEL BENTLEY: Fortune is really excited to unveil their "2020 40 Under 40 List." This year, we've broken the list down into subcategories. And this has been a great opportunity to reflect greater diversity within certain industries. So I've been taking control of the media entertainment list. And it's been great to really find the hidden gems in those industries who maybe wouldn't be at the forefront if it was on a general 40 list. A lot of people on this list were selected because they took a stand this year, as well as succeeding in their careers. That meant they stood up for racial justice. They stood up for inequality. They stood up against poverty or they took a stand to help with the coronavirus. This year, those who made the list submitted videos of themselves answering a variety of questions. One question that was interesting and telling for those on the media list was, what advice has helped you the most in your career, and where did it come from? RYAN WATT: I think the most important one that started for me was from my mom in the beginning, where it was really harnessing around passion. You know, I think in order to do great work, you need to be passionate about what you do. And as cliche as that is, I find it to be personally very true for myself. ROBIN ARZON: Asking myself the question, why not me? When I was a lawyer, my mother asked me, why not me? Why not you, Robin, to pivot, adapt, and create a life that wasn't divorced from movement? And I keep asking myself that question. MONA CHALABI: The advice that has taught me most came from my mother, as most good advice does. And it was to never ever look up to anyone and never ever look down on anyone either. MAX CUTLER: My mom and my dad, they taught me to question, and, to experiment, and to create. My mom especially taught me to question everything. I believe strongly that if you want a disrupted industry, if you want to start a business and be different, you must question. You must ask why. My dad taught me to never stop creating and experimenting. SCOOTER BRAUN: One of the best pieces of advice I got in life and in business is from David Geffen, who's incredibly prolific. We met the very first time. One of the times we were talking, he said, in 100 years, no one's going to remember me, so they sure as hell won't remember you. Get over yourself. NAZ ALETAHA: One of my managers at Riot, who is also a mentor of mine, he advised me to have the confidence and the drive to take every challenge on from a place of total ownership. MATTHEW A. CHERRY: The advice that has been most helpful in my career has come from my manager of 13 years, Monica A. Young, and she's just always told me to keep creating. I think sometimes when you're young, you get frustrated because things aren't happening as fast as you want them to. And she's always told me just focus on the work. You never know which project is going to be the thing that's going to take off for you. And so you just gotta keep your head down and just keep creating. And that's advice that I would give to other filmmakers as well. BENJAMIN CLYMER: Early on in my career, I met some really, really thoughtful, creative people, the likes of John Mayer, the singer, Tony Fadell, Tony Conrad, Jason Fried, other great entrepreneurs and thinkers. And all of them have encouraged us to simply not be afraid of not only failure, but not to be afraid of success, which is something that people don't really think about. MICHAEL R. JACKSON: Not really advice so much as something that someone said to me, Kate Bornstein, who is a performer and author and activist, who defined the word "eloquence" as the telling of a truth to ease suffering. And when I heard those words, it occurred to me that that's the kind of work that I want to make-- truth-telling work that eases suffering. [MUSIC PLAYING]
