[ MUSIC ] Welcome to Broad Strokes. For this show, we talk about the news that matters to women. So, Davos kicked off this week, the world economic forum where all the global elite gather to talk about the economic issues of the day, this happens every year and every year they got called up for not having enough women. So this year there are about 20 % women, which is not a lot, but it is a record. Yeah, I mean it is a record. And some of the big names you see there are the same names that you see on Fortune's list of the most powerful women. So, Sheryl Sandberg. Ginni Rometty, Meg Whitman, Mary Barra, people like that. But so many of the panels that they're on are about women, right? They're about gender equality issues, about how to get women in STEM, how to get more women on boards or in the C- suite. I would like to see more women talking, in general, about what the conference is about, economic issues. There's an easy way to do that. So basically, this year there's about 10 % of panels that are still all male at Davos, which should just not be acceptable in this day and age. So if they make an effort to put women on All panels. You're naturally gonna attract more women. You're naturally going to surface issues that matter to women. So speaking of men and gender equality, there was a really interesting study that came out this week that basically looked at, you know, overall in the US, how People feel about gender equality, whether they think women have equal opportunities to men, whether they think it's a good time to be a woman in the U. S. today. What particularly stood out in this poll is that republican men have really different attitudes about this stuff than really anyone else. So, they were the only group that said. It's actually a better time right now in America to be a woman than a man. And they also think maybe gender equality is important to them, but they think we're already there. One guy actually said that he believed that the white man in America was at the bottom of the totem pole right now. Part of the issue here is that Republican men, as I should say, don't really agree with everyone else on what it means to have gender equality. So, in the poll for example, you had Republican men say that having women in political office And having women share care- taking responsibilities, don't really matter for gender equality. << Yeah, i mean it's obvious to people like us that those things do matter. They mean that we got policies that help women, they mean that women have to be in the work force. But it's important for us to remember not everyone we talk to is on the same page, so we need to do the The work to convince people why those things are important. So speaking of women's equality, we had a really interesting piece of the site this week from Sally Krawcheck, she has a new book out so she wrote this piece for us that basically says, I'm so over the term women's empowerment. Yeah, I thought this was really interesting too and I also hate that word, so it was a great piece for me to read. But, the reason [ UNKNOWN ] hates it is to empower someone means to give someone power. I think a great example of women being empowered is when Trump is basically saying He broke the glass ceiling for women in construction. Yeah. So, basically Sallie Krawcheck wants us just to get really active, to see his power, to figure out where we have power and she have Had some talking points about how we can do that in her piece that were really interesting. So, she wants me to have more of like what she terms courageous conversations. So, this is basically like when sex [ UNKNOWN ] happens around you Have a conversation about it and not just with the other women at the office but with the whole staff, with whoever is the root of the problem. Yeah, I mean this definitely really resonated with me. I think no woman wants to be the sexism police and always calling this stuff out but I think it's really important.
