We asked this question of ourselves. Where is the greatest corner, the greatest block in the greatest neighborhood in New York City? And everybody in the room said, Well, we're on it. It's right here at 270 Park Avenue. Towering 1,388 ft over Midtown East is JPMorgan Chase's new global headquarters, 270 Park Avenue. This bustling avenue is home to luxury high rises and neighboring Fortune 500 companies, a gem for real estate. But construction isn't the only thing making noise on Park Avenue. Days into the new year, the bank notified its employees about a return to the office. The mandate would be for 5 days a week starting as soon as March. The conversation has since sparked backlash from workers. JPMorgan Chase is the nation's biggest bank with $4 trillion in assets at the end of 2024. The bank ranks number 7 on the Fortune world's most admired companies list, 2 spots lower than the previous year. Could sky-high terraces and a decked out food court. To its new headquarters be enough to win over workers in New York? Why is JPMorgan Chase building this new office building? What does it give that the current one that we're in can? It's become more and more apparent to everybody that place, the physical place, is really important for folks, for their energy, for the way they feel about themselves, and the way they feel about their companies. David Arena is the head. Of global real estate at JPMorgan Chase, he says the building was designed with employee wellness, safety, and hospitality in mind. For that, the bank tapped esteemed architect Norman Foster, whose global portfolio ranges from the Hearst Tower in New York City to the Reichstag Building redesign in Berlin. 270 Park Avenue silhouette has evolved 3 times since opening in 1917. In 57, the building was demolished, becoming the site of the Union Carbide Building. This became the home of JPMorgan Chase and Co. Operations have since moved across the street to 3383 Madison, which allowed Foster to reimagine the property's facade. There was a lot of conversation about building a building that kind of felt like it was constantly moving upwards. New York City has this phrase called excelsior. It's Latin for ever upwards. Originally when we got the first set of architectural schematics, it was a typical wedding cake building, big trading box at the ground floor. The really unique thing about this building, and that I find really interesting is that it's raised 80 ft off the ground, so that's really different than a lot of the other offices around. And it's purposeful, and the executives at JPMorgan Chase told me it's because they wanted to be good neighbors to their fellow New Yorkers here. They wanted to create a sense of walkability, especially during, you know, a crowded lunch rush like today here in New York. Inside the 60-story skyscraper are renovations that arena cites as ways to elevate the office experience. This includes 3 times more fresh air, up to 30% larger. to maximize natural light and 40% more hospitality space. The building will also be fitted with lighting technology that can mimic natural circadian rhythms or even be customized to personal preferences. Talk to me about the tech in this building. Is there any new tech that's really exciting to you? Any new ways you're using AI to help with this? So I think all of the above, there is lots of new tech in a building like this. All the major systems, the elevator system, the security system, the emergency power systems, the air systems, they are all so much smarter in 2024 than they were in 2015. They'll know when you register for a conference room how you like the temperature, etc. They'll know when you show up at Starbucks in the morning or in whatever the coffee shops we have, how you like your latte. How, how does that work? Do employees have to input preferences or what it's all magic. Machine learning and AI will power these enhancements. Arena says the headquarters will also host 19 different restaurants, some of which include table service. We want people here all day. We don't want you to leave, and we do a lot of events in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. We have our clients here all the time. We work the facility, so for us these are great investments. Arena says the bank expects to move its 1st 2000 employees into the building at the end of August. By December, the remaining staff are expected to move in. In the last 10 years, the bank says it has delivered 125,000 new or updated seats across its global markets. It also aims to provide 75,000 seats within the next five years. This new building may be the bank's boldest experiment yet, but it's just the beginning of Diamond's ambitious vision for the company. The holy grail for folks in our business is to really create something in the physical world that is a manifestation of the culture of a firm. While the bank's executives are confident that the new headquarters will encourage compliance, the weeks leading up to March will reveal just how willing employees are to commit to the 5 day mandate.

Will Amazon’s big investment in robotics pay off and what does this mean for the future of its workers?

This robot snuck up beside me. Uh oh, this is one of the primary sites where Amazon designs, tests, and builds its fleet of more than 750,000 robots. We wanted to have this visual of the engineers being able to look out the windows and say, I can see my product. I built it. I designed it here. I can go downstairs. I'm on with the test engineers. It may sound sort of like R2-D2. The decade plus multi-billion dollar investment into robotics is key to Amazon's efficiency goals, especially as the delivery behemoth faces accusations about worker safety in its fulfillment centers. Before we start talking about productivity and efficiency, we start with safety as we think about the. The within the fulfillment centers to innovate and improve, we tend to look at the most challenging tasks lifting, manipulating, moving. So will Amazon's big robotics bet pay off as humans work side by side with robots? What will this mean for Amazon's workers and the future of its shipping business? We are about an hour outside of Boston at Amazon's robotics hub. It's a relatively new facility they bought a few years ago. We're here to look at Amazon's unique approach to robotics, which is to have the entire life cycle of the project and of the products under one roof, from development to testing to manufacturing. So Joe, we're about an hour outside of Boston. What's the history of this facility? We opened this facility about 3 years ago, and you can see on this road there's a number of Amazon facilities. Our mother's site was, was the original site, which is the Boss 12 up in North Reading, and we've grown quite a bit, and we want to open another development site and so we landed in West, Massachusetts. The talented area is rich from previous, you know, generations of technology that had been up and down the corridor here. We built this about 3 years ago, you know, when we opened it, we were a little worried, you know. Would they come and they and they have come, which is pretty exciting. Amazon has two robotics sites in the greater Boston area. The North Reading location was part of the acquisition of Kiva in 2012, which then became Amazon Robotics. What's unique about this space is how many roles it houses under one roof, from designers to scientists to testing engineers. Can I drive one? Yeah. It's the result of a decision to not outsource and maintain control of the supply chain. They seem to be communicating. Their own little language. This one's got a bin. This one I'm controlling. This one has a mind of its own. I don't really know what it's doing, but it's chirping a lot, so it seems to be happy. I pursue this strategy of vertical integration of building every aspect of the supply chain and manufacturing the robots. Well, one speed, right? The thing is having anten control, full vertical is we think gives us speed, and every time you start decoupling things, you're going to lose that speed. And then you're also going to lose the insights that the other processes have or the other functions have by having it all together, that feedback loop is super tight. The second thing is innovation, right? We get lots of great insight from those other teams. So the teams that are building the manufacturing teams have a large voice into the design cycle and they influence our design, impact our design. The folks that are deploying it also here have a large voice into the impact. This is where a lot of the software development is done for these products, and you can start with an idea on a whiteboard. 9 months later you can see it all of a sudden being in a prototype in the test lab. 18 months later you see your product rolling off the line. That is like super empowering when new candidates come in and see what's the Amazon special sauce and robotics. This is it. Amazon is #7 on this year's most innovative companies list, and its robotics program is helping lead the charge on innovation. Multiple robots are developed or tested here in Westboro, fulfilling different roles from lifting to sorting to getting out of the. Way of humans. We're going to see your favorite robot, Proteus. Yeah, when we started that, there was a team of 6, and often where innovation gets stifled is when you overstaff a program too early. And sometimes the best path to success is to keep it super small with highly talented people who can move at a pace that a larger team will slow us down. Is the main thing that you're working on these arms and checking out the Proteus. So Proteus is my specialty. These are very complicated systems. And are you working on the engineering side as well, or is it? More on the testing once it's actually out here in production. So my particular job is with testing. We'd rather find problems here, get them fixed, and then push the fixed version with the improvements and updates out production in order to make the system better. What's it like working alongside robots? Oh, it's great. I really enjoy this. I've been doing this for quite a while, so I've really, really taken a liking to the robots, both the arms, the drive units, the combination of the two of them working together. Yeah, it's really fun. Robotics are gonna fundamentally change what their jobs are, right? What tasks they're doing every day. So how do you think about that? And that's super exciting too. It's creating new opportunities. I think we've all seen there's always this tension between how does impact people, and I think we've always seen that automation and technology breakthroughs create opportunities and create new jobs, and I think it's hard to argue that Amazon has not been a great job creator in almost every domain, you know, you can. but automation is still inevitably going to come with concerns over worker replacement, and I know Amazon has invested a lot more than a billion dollars in this process of upskilling or teaching new skills to workers. Do you think upskilling is the solution to fears of replacement? There are two things. We continue to grow at a very high rate and so the number of facilities, the number of jobs we're creating is been. to see. And then the second part is, yeah, the upskilling is creating new exciting jobs and opportunities for potentially a group of people that wouldn't have that opportunity. And so I think in both dimensions we're going to see growth. And it's not just upskilling that's front of mind. A Senate committee report released in December reported conditions at Amazon warehouses were unsafe and prioritized speed over safety. How much does safety play a role in your thinking about how robotics are going to Into Amazon's process, it's front and center. Before we start talking about productivity and efficiency, we start with safety. As we think about the opportunity within the fulfillment centers to innovate and improve, we tend to look at the most challenging tasks lifting, manipulating, moving things. We're excited about what we've done, and we have a new facility with some of our newer generation technology that is 10x the automation of our previous generation. Amazon is known for its relentless pursuit of efficiency and productivity. Of course they're always trying to get packages to customers faster and faster. Robotics is really key to making that happen. At the same time, safety is a huge concern for Amazon. Joe talked about how a lot of worker functions, and especially the worker functions like repetitive movements that often lead to injuries, are being replaced by robots. And I think Amazon acknowledges this, and they put a lot of investment into upskilling or this process of basically teaching workers new skills and being able to give them new jobs. I mean, whether that's successful, I think remains to be seen, and you'll still have fears of what replacement looks like for workers, but you can see that robotics really will be the future in trying to replace a lot of the different areas that we do associate with workplace injuries and risk. I asked Joe whether he did see a future in which the warehouses or the fulfillment centers would be fully automated, and I think Amazon hasn't even fully thought that through, but I think even for a company as innovative as Amazon, it's still unclear what this might look like 10 years down the road. The great thing about Amazon, it still operates in many ways like a startup has a startup mentality of speed. You're able to innovate at a speed and you don't get bogged down with bureaucracy over sometimes a big company. I mean, there have been challenging times when I was sure this thing was going to work in some way and it didn't, and the disappointment your idea just didn't pan out. But to see the impact when you go globally, our products have made to our associates that flywheel of driving customer selection, lower prices and speed, I get to see it real time and so that's been pretty it's like a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Long known for its no-frills roots, Walmart is now investing big in its hometown to attract top-tier talent, modernize its culture, and compete with tech giants like Amazon. Here’s a closer look at how the United States’ largest employer is reinventing itself.

Walmart is making a big change in how it operates—and it starts in Bentonville, Arkansas. Fortune gets an inside look at the retail giant’s brand-new, 350-acre campus. 

This 350 acre campus is the site of Walmart's new headquarters, a huge bet on in-person work. This home base is a big tool for talent attraction as well. And it's all taking shape here in Bentonville, Arkansas. The ability to recruit talent is so much easier now that we have built our campus. People really have the desire to come together. With over $600 billion in annual revenue and 1.6 million US employees, Walmart is both the nation's largest company and its largest private employer, but it's also faced a lot of questions over its labor practices, store wages, and whether it can compete with Amazon. Now the company is turning inward, investing heavily in an amenity-packed headquarters meant to attract top tier talent and reshape its corporate culture. This sprawling new campus includes 12 office buildings, workout facilities, 2 miles of bike trails, a childcare center, and even a hotel. The facilities opened officially in January, but the rollout will continue in phases throughout 2025. So this is our campus welcome center. It's got our first original Walmart sign and kind of size to the very early Walmart stores for the company. Walmart's roots run deep in northwest Arkansas, where Sam Walton opened the first store in 1962. Since then, the region has been the heart and soul of the retail giant. Company and the board said we're going to invest in a new place to work. It's really easy for us to decide we're staying in Bentonville, a place that built us. In the last 10 years, quite a few large companies have inaugurated new headquarters. Was there anything out there, you know, common mistake that you said, you know, you can learn from others in advance. Is there anything that you said, OK, well, let's let's avoid that. So other campuses that were doing larger urban settings or maybe sort of had the luxury of being Walled off from their community we knew we didn't want to be that we knew that the lines between work and life continued to blur and great company campuses can be very productive spaces and stay alive in the evenings and the weekends. So for us we knew that we didn't want to kind of single ourselves away. In fact, we went all the way in the other direction and we've really tried to make it feel like this campus is great for Walmart and great for Bentonville. This is a great example of a bike garden, so these are at every entry, covered bike parking. Our aspiration is to get 10% of our associates actively commuting through alternate ways. That focus on merging Walmart in Bentonville has helped to find the look and feel of the campus, but it's not just changing Walmart, it's transforming Bentsonville. Since 2020, the county population has increased by 13%, and the average home price has gone up over 70%. And it's not just home prices. Residents are seeing an increase in property taxes and the cost of water doubling. And as the Waltons continue to announce new investments, there are no signs of Northwest Arkansas seeing a slowdown in growth. So I want to connect this a little bit to Bentonville. Bentonville, I was shocked when I took my taxi and saw a population of 54,000, whatever it is, and it was pretty sleepy not long ago. It's not a metropolis yet, you know, but is it part of that idea that people can come to Bentonville and have a lot of the amenities that they would find. In a Seattle or in a New York City, I would argue it's even better than Seattle or other places because the sentiment that we hear from the recruiting side is that this is a town where people feel like it has that small town feel, you know, it does really feel like you're building, you're coming into a community, but it does have Access to a lot of the larger city amenities if you look at our beautiful healthcare center, the beautiful green space we have access to great food, great restaurants, culture museums, it really does have it all, if you will. So while it might not be the big metropolis, you know, of a New York or other places, it really has the Best of both worlds. So from your point of view, what is it about the facilities that fosters the culture and interaction, because you know a physical space is a physical space, and there has to be, you can't just say, OK, all of you go work in these buildings and you'll have a culture and you'll collaborate more. So what has to accompany the physical amenities? Speaking as a talent person, I will say you have to have the right talent in the right roles. That's like job number one. But I will also say going back, gosh, during the pandemic when all of the spaces were being designed and they solicited input from the experts in learning, right, the experts in tech, etc. So it really was designed with the, how shall I say, end user in mind, of which is the associate. It's all part of a transformation Walmart hopes will help redefine its image from legacy retail giant to forward thinking employer of choice. This is a place we call the library. May you asked me if there was anything we changed during the pandemic, and this is a great illustration of a lesson learned, maybe an enhancement that we made. You spent years with people in their homes, in their offices, in their living rooms, on their patios, and I've learned a lot about our associates just from zooming with them in this space made me realize people really embrace the residential nature of their home. They like to have comfortable places to occupy. So tell us a bit about the former Home Office, which had been the Home Office for what, about 50 years, more or less a quite a long time. Yes. What were the shortcomings there that guided, you think the construction of all this and to your mind is more conducive to the culture, I think the The challenge with the old home office, it was, it was wonderful. It suited our culture. I think the challenge with the older campus was it was a bit spread out, so it was probably a little less convenient, you know, to interact and connect and collaborate than obviously this new campus is doing. The old Walmart home office was housed in a former warehouse. There was minimal light and reflected the frugal ethos of the company. To get a better sense of the past, I went to the Walmart Museum in the town square. It's filled with artifacts like Sam Walton's truck and office and even has a Sam Walton hologram. We're going to go inside, have a look at some of the historical high points of this company and what has created the culture that the new home office recently opened seeks to preserve and enhance. So here we are looking at a replica of Sam Walton's original office that was housed at the previous Home Office with the common thread. You know, one thing Walmart always talks about is our values are timeless, but change is constant, and one of the things that I'm really proud about as a 23 year Walmart associate is. The investment in new workspaces, being able to bring all of our teams together. Historically in Bentonville we've been spread out across 29 buildings all over town and the new home office brings all those different teams together to really unlock being more effective and efficient in person. Really. Let me introduce myself. My name is Sam. For decades, Walmart's focus was outward, pouring billions into logistics, supply chain infrastructure, and international expansion. It was all part of a race to stay ahead of rivals like Amazon, whose dominance in e-commerce has reshaped how Americans shop. And now that many of the largest companies in the country have built state of the art headquarters, Walmart has felt the pressure to keep up. I think coming out of the. pandemic, there's a real need and desire for people to connect with each other, to create community, come together to grow and learn, and I think the campus, the way that it's been designed, has really facilitated that already. So that's what I think the overarching purpose is. You know, there was a time, for example, some of the e-commerce teams were out west and You know, it can be a little disparity. It's the idea here to create one unified Walmart, you know, we're not talking about the store employees, but The corpus, is that the idea behind all of this? Yeah, I think yes, and we're still going to have hubs. We have hubs on the west coast where a lot of our tech talent is, East Coast in New Jersey. We have teams there as well, but the goal is, you know, our culture is present anywhere where we are, and so we'll continue to have that. And go to where the talent is, but know that those teams also come here and work together as well. So this is sort of the heartbeat, if you will, of Walmart, but now that we have other locations where we'll continue to, you know, build our teams as well. You have a sense of what tech talent wants or what, you know, somebody who would be going. A luxury retailer wants. So the point of all this as well is to give those employees the amenities that in a way the market says people with their skills should have access to. Yeah, absolutely. The candidates that we're bringing here, they are inspired, and I think the inspiration comes from not just the beauty of the campus, the green spaces, etc. but it's The ease in which we can connect now on campus. In fact, our sentiment data that's shared with us, our candidates that come in are 3 times more likely to be open to moving to Northwest Arkansas because they've come here, they've visited, they've experienced the area, they've experienced our campus, and they feel our culture.

Inside IBM’s Quantum Lab: Building the AI of the Future

So this is the inside of one of our Heron characterization systems. It's the largest quantum processor that's available for people to use out there. Welcome to IBM's Quantum Lab, where one of the world's oldest tech companies is making its boldest bet yet. We see ourselves as always having a dual mission in research. One is to be Organic growth engine of the company and that the second mission in IBM research is to invent the future of computing at IBM, that future is being molded inside this ultra cold high-tech lab. It's making a big bet on a technology that turns the strangest laws of quantum physics into raw computing power. IBM's Yorktown Heights campus was designed in the early 1960s and was one of the final projects of the visionary architect Eero Saarinen, known for futuristic designs that captured the spirit of technological advancement like the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport. Nestled inside the building, this quantum computing lab is more than an experiment in physics. It's an experiment in corporate reinvention. Welcome to our quantum characterization and test lab. Typically what we do here is a lot of the pre-testing and checking of our quantum chips. What you hear are actually our quantum computing test systems that you're looking at right here. It's kind of noisy. That's the sound of these refrigeration systems that we have. It's actually a compressor that basically takes our quantum chips and cool them down to 100 times colder than outer space. What we're looking at here are a couple of our quantum processor chips. So that one chip in there has 1000 qubits on it. Unlike the binary ones and zeros of classical computers, quantum machines use qubits, able to represent many states at once. That lets them solve problems too complex for today's most powerful supercomputers. While other tech giants race to own the cloud or dominate large language models, IBM is carving out a different future, one where quantum and AI converge to tackle the world's. Most complex challenges. IBM is obviously making some really big bets in AI and quantum. It feels like you're all in, but so much of that comes from where we're sitting right now at the IBM research lab. You're right, in so many ways there's like this thread of connectivity from the past to the future, and sort of IBM research is at the fulcrum of that thread across IBM's history. For decades, IBM was the titan of business tech. The company was known for popularizing the punch card and the magnetic stripe credit card. They built towering mainframe computers and its early Watson AI became famous for winning Jeopardy. Since 1961 when we've had this building, this has been like the mother ship. Now IBM research the mothership, yeah, IBM Research is global. We have labs across the globe, but this is the mothership because this is where we actually have our AI systems, our quantum system too. It inspires our clients, it inspires our partners, and certainly inspires our employees. IBM was the titan of business tech until it wasn't. Caught between the rise of big cloud and the boom of consumer software, IBM slowly faded from relevance. Yet under CEO Arvind Krishna, that story is changing. He spun off the company's slower moving divisions, doubled down on artificial intelligence, and revived a moonshot that's been decades in the making, quantum computing. This is our think lab. There's a quantum computer here. There's an AI supercomputer here and there's classiccompute all throughout. There's our Z system. So this is really where uh this vision of the future of computing bits, neurons, and qubits all come together in one place. A good way to think about it really is that nature and everything that we experience around us, it really obeys the laws of quantum mechanics, but we don't really experience that. We don't really, you know, per se care, but underlying is it entirely very rich mathematics. That when it's leveraged to compute, you can do things entirely different from what you can do with your classical computers that rely on bits, zeros and ones, for example. So the desktop on your desktop, your phone, right, even the most powerful GPUs out there, they're still using zeros and ones. But when you have a quantum computer, you're using a much richer mathematical representation. It changes the rules for how you can actually process information. From the outside, I feel like for a lot of people, AI, maybe people are starting to wrap their minds around how this fits into my daily life into my daily work. Quantum feels so much farther away than that, and yet it's being so hyped right now. We have always thought about it in sort of three stages. We've said those. Quantum utility, quantum advantage, and then we'll talk about full fall tolerant computing. We said there was quantum utility already in 2023 where you're able to show that a combination of quantum and classical computing is you can do things that you couldn't do classically even by simulation. So I mean, so this is actually the inside of one of our refrigeration systems, OK? You see a lot of cabling and a lot of wiring. I'll get my colleagues to open it up for you to see the inside of it. When people say, Oh, this is hype, this is never really going to happen for real, you say what? Well, we have proof points. This is where we work with our global set of partners. It's not just us seeing anymore, right? So our most recent demonstration is with our partners Rean in Japan. Combining our quantum computer with the Fugaku supercomputer. So this is not all abstract. Here is data. He is an experiment. Here is what you would have done classically. Here is quantum and classical working together. I think demystification is a, actually having systems people can work with. 2, working with an ecosystem of partners. I think we have a worldwide network of over 250 partners. IBM knows the stakes. Quantum computing is far from changing anything tech in your hands right now, but its impact could reshape global industries. And if IBM is right, it won't just compete with today's tech giants, it will leapfrog them. But if it's wrong, this lab becomes another cautionary tale of corporate overreach. So here we're looking at. This is all going to grow in miniature form, miniature form, right? I think, but it's good sense to show the concept of modularity, right, where you know you have your classical sort of compute clusters, you have your cryogenic infrastructure where the quantum processors sit, and then there's classical electronics around it, but we really designed this in a way that is that has this opportunity to scale and you know we really have a vision of building this out. IBM's CEO is betting that deep tech is still worth the risk, and Wall Street agrees the company's shares reached a record high in June, driven by the company's announcement of a roadmap to build the world's first large scale fault tolerant quantum computer by 2029. Already IBM is bringing in partners from research labs to Fortune 500s, eager to be early adopters of what could become the most transformative computing shift since the microchip. Kids today, they might not think of IBM. When they think AI they think open AI they think Google, they think anthropic. Does that concern you or do you see IBM just having a different path? Companies with a consumer business have a natural opportunity to have their technology in the hands of consumers, and that gives them a natural path too. Visibility and awareness, but I think we're very, very comfortable honestly as a company and including the research division that we are an enterprise focused company, but that doesn't change the fact that we are really moving the needle on the future of computing. It's just we need different parts for that awareness to drive it. We have learned, especially in AI predictions beyond 35 years. Yes, I could tell you anything you wanted, and, and so, so acknowledging the uncertainty of that, we believe that our combination of AI and hybrid cloud allows us to tap into the biggest market. So success is being the absolute leader in enterprise AI.
