Our Thoughts on Obagi Medical Professional-C Serum
Obagi Medical Professional-C Serum is our pick for the best vitamin C serum overall because it’s easy to use and doesn’t pill under sunscreen or makeup. The bottle itself is small, so you can throw it into a bag or carry-on with ease. It takes a few minutes to fully absorb and doesn’t look greasy.
Ann tested Obagi Medical Professional-C Serum. Her skin is dry and sensitive; she also manages eczema flare-ups. She rated the application of this serum a 5 out of 5.
Our tester noted: “The serum comes in a dark blue glass bottle, which earns points for helping to block out light (this can damage the formula). I like that the tip of the dropper is slightly angled so I can control where the serum goes on my face. As for the serum itself, the directions say to ‘apply to face in the morning, follow with sunscreen.’ It also says to use within three to six months of opening. It doesn’t tell you how much to apply, but I used only a few drops. It is light and spreads easily across my skin. It leaves a glowy finish and takes a few minutes to dry.”

She also rated the texture and feel of the serum a 5 out of 5. “The serum is oily. It feels super hydrating and soothing. I have very dry and sensitive skin, so I opted for the 10% vitamin C serum (Obagi offers 10%, 15%, and 20%). I knew 20% would be too much for my skin, and I found that the 10% is gentle enough,” Ann said. “While I can tell that there is something on my skin, it doesn’t leave me feeling greasy or sticky. I like that there is a subtle flowery fragrance, although not everyone may enjoy that. As for absorption, it does take a few minutes, but I had no problem putting my sunscreen on right away.” Ann also reported that this serum doesn’t pill under her sunscreen or makeup, which is a bonus for someone looking to add a product to their quick morning skincare routine.

It’s not bad enough that I wouldn’t use the product,” she said.

The pump in the bottle makes it easy to dispense and travel with, making it a great choice for professionals who travel frequently to client sites and conferences and need to take their skincare routine along with them.

Our Thoughts on Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum
Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum is our pick for the best vitamin C serum for dark spots because it includes 15% THD ascorbate (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), which is a precursor to L-ascorbic acid and may have anti-aging effects, though more studies are needed.
After using it for just a few days, our tester noticed that her skin started feeling more hydrated, supple, and smooth. She started applying this serum to recently healed breakouts, and while the redness isn’t gone yet, the texture has already started to smooth out.
We think this serum will work great for dark spots based on Meredith’s initial feedback. She has acne-prone, oily skin. “I’m also over 30 and starting to show signs of aging and dullness,” she said.

She rated the application of this serum a 5 out of 5. “The bottle is really nice. The pump is very easy to use and has a high-quality feel to it. It dispenses a perfect amount in one pump. The product itself feels luxe, thick, and creamy, and spreads evenly and easily. It absorbed into my skin quickly, which means I can move on to the next part of my routine quickly,” Meredith said.
Meredith rated the texture and feel of this serum a 5 out of 5, as well. “I loved the texture and feel of this product. It feels worth the price tag. It’s thick and creamy, not at all watery. I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth and not paying for a watered-down product. It’s not slick or greasy and absorbed nicely into my skin. It also doesn’t leave me feeling like I need to wipe my hands off; it’s not sticky or tacky.”
For professionals who prioritize quality, efficacy, and a luxurious experience, and are willing to spend the money to get a top-notch product, we think Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum is well worth considering.
Our tester rated the skin comfort a 5 out of 5. “There were absolutely no uncomfortable sensations during or after use,” Meredith said. “Almost immediately, my skin felt more hydrated and softer. Within just a few days of consistent morning use, I am already feeling a difference in my skin. While I can’t see a difference yet, I can definitely feel a difference. My skin feels a lot more supple.”

Best Vitamin C Serum for Dull Skin: Prequel Lucent-C Brightening Vitamin C Serum
Prequel Lucent-C Brightening Vitamin C Serum

at Prequel
- Our thoughts: Our tester observed noticeably brighter skin
- Who it’s for: Value-minded professionals who want a fragrance-free, lightweight vitamin C serum
- What makes it different: Includes ergothioneine, an antioxidant
Pros
- Affordable
- Comes in a bottle with a pump
- Fragrance-free
Cons
- Only available in one size
- May irritate sensitive skin
- May be too liquid-y for some folks’ preference
Our Thoughts on Prequel Lucent-C Brightening Vitamin C Serum
Prequel Lucent-C Brightening Vitamin C Serum is our pick for the best vitamin C serum for dull skin because it includes vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), ferulic acid, and vitamin B3 (niacinamide). It also has ergothioneine, which is an antioxidant. After several months of use, our tester noted that her skin looks brighter and less dull.
Gwen tested Prequel Lucent-C Brightening Vitamin C Serum. She has normal skin, though it gets dry in the winter. She also manages eczema, which flares up in particularly dry weather. Her primary skin concerns are dryness and dehydration.
Our tester rated the application of this serum a 5 out of 5: “This product has a pump, and it’s super easy to use,” she said. “The pump also comes with a cap, which is great because I don’t have to worry about it spilling in my makeup bag. One pump is plenty for my whole face, which I love. The texture is very liquid-y, so you don’t need to rub it into your skin. Instead, it spreads really easily, and all I do is gently tap it into my forehead, cheeks, and chin,” Gwen said.

She also rated texture and feel a 5 out of 5. “I really like the texture of this vitamin C serum,” Gwen said. “It’s lightweight and watery, which is ideal for me. In the past, I’ve used gel-like vitamin C serums, and they always seem to pill when I follow the other steps of my makeup routine. This one absorbs quickly and fully, so I don’t have to wait 15 minutes before I follow it with moisturizer. I don’t notice it leaving any residue or stickiness, either.”
For skin comfort, Gwen rated this serum a 4.5 out of 5. “Vitamin C is an acid (ascorbic acid), which means that it can burn on sensitive skin. That said, it’s generally not recommended to put on sensitive or damaged skin. When my eczema flares, and I decide to break the rules, this serum does cause a little tingling and irritation. However, I don’t blame the product because when I use it on my eczema, I’m not using the product properly. BUT when my skin is behaving, I have zero issues with it. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and glowing,” she said.
Of the overall effectiveness, Gwen rated this product a 5 out of 5. “I’ve used this product for several months, and my skin looks brighter, and I’m noticing less dullness. I don’t often have uneven texture, but when I have a blemish, it leaves a long-standing mark. This serum definitely helps brighten that darkness, which I love.”

Why the Right Vitamin C Serum Matters to Professionals
The right vitamin C serum will fit seamlessly into your existing skincare routine, not add complications. We selected serums that won’t pill under your sunscreen or makeup, so that you can confidently go about your commute, workday, and happy hour.
A well-chosen vitamin C serum won’t irritate or upset your skin. The right formula is more about simplifying your routine and optimizing your time, so you can get on with your day.
How We Tested and Selected the Best Vitamin C Serums
Here’s what we considered when testing and selecting the best vitamin C serums.

Application
Testers made note of how easy it was to apply the vitamin C serum. They also shared the method of application: pump or dropper. Testers also considered how messy (or neat) applying the vitamin C serum was. Testers rated application on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the easiest to apply.
1: The dropper or pump is difficult to use, dispenses inconsistently, or wastes product. Serum is hard to spread evenly across skin.
2: Application is somewhat inconvenient due to packaging or difficulty distributing product evenly.
3: Application is acceptable but not especially smooth or efficient.
4: The dropper or pump works well, product dispenses easily, and serum spreads evenly with minimal effort.
5: The packaging is intuitive and reliable, dispensing the right amount of product easily. The serum spreads effortlessly and evenly across the skin with minimal product waste.
Formula
We considered vitamin C serum formulations by looking at the strength of each product. Products that were available in multiple strengths were prioritized, as vitamin C serum needs to be slowly built up on your skin over time, rather than putting on a strength that could be too potent for your skin.
Texture and Feel
Testers considered the texture and feel of the vitamin C serum. Some testers liked a more watery, liquid-y texture, while others preferred a more creamy or gel-like feel. Testers rated texture and feel on a scale of 1 to 5.
1: Texture is unpleasant (too sticky, greasy, heavy, or irritating) and does not absorb well.
2: Serum feels noticeably sticky, greasy, or sits on the skin longer than expected.
3: Texture is acceptable but not particularly pleasant or noteworthy.
4: Serum feels comfortable, absorbs well, and leaves only minimal residue or stickiness depending on formula type.
5: Texture is lightweight and pleasant (watery, gel-like, or milky depending on formulation), absorbs quickly, and leaves skin feeling smooth with no noticeable residue or greasiness.
Skin Comfort
Testers also shared their skin comfort level while using the vitamin C serum, meaning: did it cause any irritation, sensitivity, or redness during use or after application? Testers then rated their skin comfort on a scale of 1 to 5.
1: Causes significant irritation, redness, stinging, or sensitivity that makes continued use difficult.
2: Causes noticeable tingling, irritation, or discomfort that persists after application.
3: Generally comfortable but may cause mild, temporary tingling or sensitivity.
4: Feels soothing or comfortable on application with minimal or no irritation.
5: Extremely comfortable. Skin feels hydrated, soothed, and balanced with no irritation, redness, or sensitivity.
Value
Benefits of Vitamin C Serums
Here are some benefits of using a vitamin C serum:
- May protect against sun damage (when used in combination with sunscreen)
- May improve the look of wrinkles over time
- May brighten your skin and make the tone look more even
- May reduce redness

What to Avoid in Vitamin C Serums
Here’s what to avoid when shopping for a vitamin C serum:
- Vitamin C serum sold in clear jars: L-ascorbic acid can be impacted by light. Look for a tinted or completely opaque bottle
- High vitamin C concentrations: Amounts of 15% to 20% may be too high to start with and cause irritation or stinging
- Added fragrance: Fragrance may irritate your skin
How to Find the Best Vitamin C Serum for You
Here’s what to consider when shopping for the best vitamin C serum for you.

Your Skin Type
Folks with oily or combination skin may prefer a vitamin C serum that’s very liquid-y and lightweight but absorbs quickly into the skin. Folks with dry skin may want a vitamin C serum that’s moisturizing and hydrating; consider a creamier texture. If you have eczema, rosacea, or manage other skin conditions, you may want to talk with your doctor before adding a vitamin C serum to your routine, as a formulation that’s too potent could cause irritation.
Primary Skin Concerns
Think about your primary skin concerns ahead of shopping for a vitamin C serum. Consider what you’d like to address, such as:
- Dryness
- Redness
- Fine lines/wrinkles
- Dullness
- Uneven texture
- Excess oil or acne
Consider a red light therapy mask to address some of these concerns, too.
Vitamin C Concentration
We recommend that you look for a vitamin C serum that has a 10% to 20% concentration of vitamin C. Keep in mind that if you have sensitive skin, you may want to start with a less strong formulation, around 10%.
Packaging
Some vitamin C serums are sold in bottles with a dropper. Others are sold in bottles with a pump for easy dispensing. Be sure to look for a bottle that is opaque, so that light doesn’t reach the serum and damage it.
“Stability matters more than the concentration printed on the front of the bottle. Vitamin C oxidizes readily, and a serum that’s turned yellow or brown has likely already lost a meaningful amount of potency before it ever touches the skin, which is part of why packaging matters as much as formulation.”
“An opaque, airtight bottle protects the product far better than a clear jar sitting in light and air. Beyond that, skin type and sensitivity should drive the concentration and form more than any general recommendation, and anyone already using exfoliating acids or a retinoid should think through the combination before layering a new vitamin C product on top,” says Dr. Brandon Richland, MD.
Cost
Skincare products can be expensive, especially if you are repurchasing them every month. Consider how a vitamin C serum would fit into your skincare routine, and what budget you’re comfortable spending.

Fortune’s Final Thoughts
Using a vitamin C serum may help brighten your skin and make it look more even. It can be a practical morning routine upgrade, especially if you’d like to brighten up your skin over time. The best vitamin C serum isn’t necessarily the highest concentration or the most expensive. It’s one that you’ll use consistently over time without skin irritation.
We like that Obagi Medical Professional-C Serum is available in multiple strengths. TruSkin’s vitamin C serum is an affordable way to get started, and Prequel if you’d prefer a lightweight and fragrance-free option. SkinCeuticals and Sunday Riley are likely better for folks willing to pay more.
Before starting any new skincare product, we recommend talking with your dermatologist or other healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is vitamin C serum good for acne?
“Vitamin C isn’t what I’d reach for first if acne is the main concern. It’s an antioxidant, so its strength is pigmentation and collagen support rather than the kind of targeted action you get from a retinoid or salicylic acid working directly on breakouts,” says Dr. Brandon Richland, MD. “Where it earns its place in an acne-prone routine is afterward, once a breakout has already happened: it helps fade the red or brown marks left behind and takes some edge off the inflammation. So it’s a reasonable addition alongside an actual acne treatment, just not the ingredient doing the real work against the acne itself.”
When should you apply vitamin C serum?
“It’s best to apply vitamin C serum in the morning,” says Dr. Richland. “Vitamin C’s main job is defending the skin against the oxidative stress that UV and pollution create over the course of a day, and it actually improves how well your sunscreen performs when it’s layered underneath it. That puts the order as cleanse, vitamin C, moisturizer, then SPF, in that sequence.”
What is the most effective form of vitamin C in a serum?
Dr. Richland says that L-ascorbic acid has the deepest research behind it. “This is why it’s referred to as the gold standard, though that comes with a tradeoff: it’s also the least stable form and the one most likely to irritate sensitive skin. Patients who can’t tolerate it often do better with a derivative like sodium ascorbyl phosphate or ascorbyl glucoside, gentler on the skin at some cost to potency and to how much research backs them. What matters more than which name is on the label is how a person’s own skin actually responds to it,” said Richland.
