Protein shakes are a great way to stay satiated on the go, especially if you’re bouncing from one meeting to the next with no end in sight. With flavors like strawberries and cream, cinnamon roll, and the ever-classic chocolate, premixed protein shakes can be both convenient and tasty.

We tested and selected the four best protein shakes of the year. Our testers considered first impressions, texture, flavor, sweetness, value, side effects, and more, and shared their feedback with us. Read on for our full reviews of the best protein drinks below.

Our Top Pick

After testing several protein shakes, our team found Premier Protein to be the best overall protein shake.

  • Our thoughts: A strong option for increasing daily protein intake while keeping calories and carbs relatively low
  • Who it’s for: Folks on the go
  • What makes it different: Contains only 1 gram of sugar

Pros

  • Readily available in grocery stores
  • Very low in sugar
  • Includes plenty of vitamins and minerals, too

Cons

  • Sweetened with sucralose
  • Third-party testing information is not available on brand’s website
  • Includes milk and soy, caution for allergies

Our Thoughts on Premier Protein

Premier Protein is our pick for the best overall protein shake because each serving is easy to take on the go and contains 30 grams of protein. Premier Protein is also more recognizable than many competitors. The brand can be found at grocery stores, convenience shops, and is often even stocked in gym vending machines. We like that it’s available in 20 flavors and now includes some non-dairy varieties.

Pete, a certified nutrition coach, tested Premier Protein’s chocolate flavor. He rated his first impression a 5 out of 5. “The label design is simple, featuring the company’s logo along with an image of chocolate ice cream to indicate the flavor, and you can see the nutrition facts. There’s a perforated edge along the label that needs to be torn to access the cap, which was easy to tear and peel away,” he said. Pete liked that the lid itself has a tamper-evident safety seal that breaks away from the base when you twist it open, confirming the bottle hasn’t been opened before.

“This pre-mixed protein drink had an excellent texture,” Pete said. “It was fully dissolved, and there were no clumps of undissolved protein powder.” He rated the mixability a 5 out of 5.

He loved the flavor; it reminded him of the nostalgic chocolate milk drink, Yoo-hoo. “It has a nice balance of sweetness and chocolate flavor,” Pete said, rating it a 5 out of 5 for flavor, and a 3 for a moderate level of sweetness. Though it uses artificial flavors and sweeteners, it didn’t taste overly artificial to Pete. “This is something I’d happily drink regularly–it’s light, smooth, and tasty,” he said.

In addition to its good flavor, Pete thinks this shake has an impressive macronutrient profile. It provides 30 grams of protein, 4 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of fat per 160-calorie serving. “This makes it a strong option for increasing daily protein intake while keeping calories and carbs relatively low, which can be helpful for weight loss or convenient post-workout nutrition,” Pete stated.

  • Our thoughts: Our tester loved the smoothness of this shake
  • Who it’s for: Folks looking for convenience and practicality
  • What makes it different: Made with ultra-filtered milk

Pros

  • Wide variety of flavors
  • 50% RDV of calcium
  • Made with milk-derived protein

Cons

  • Contains artificial ingredients
  • Our tester noticed an aftertaste
  • Processed ingredient list (carrageenan, cellulose gel and gum)

Our Thoughts on Muscle Milk

Muscle Milk is our pick for the best value protein shake because it’s one of the more affordable shakes we have tested. Muscle Milk is available in flavors like chocolate, s’mores, strawberries’n’cream, and more. Each serving includes 26 grams of protein and half of your daily recommended amount of calcium, helping you build muscle and maintain strong bones.

Pete tested Muscle Milk’s chocolate flavor, rating its Genuine Protein Shake a 5 out of 5 for first impressions. “Although the label includes a perforated edge near the lid, it was still difficult to remove, and I had to use my teeth to bite it. Once the top portion was peeled away, the actual lid opened and closed easily. Underneath the lid, there was a foil seal that added another layer of protection. The foil seal had a built-in tab that made it simple to peel off,” Pete said. He found the label design to be effective and thinks the product stands out on a store shelf. The brand uses bold red, black, and white, which helps the bottle stand out.

The shake came pre-mixed and was fully dissolved. Pete liked its smooth mouth feel, rating mixability and texture a 5 out of 5. There weren’t any clumps or chunks of powder in the bottle.

Overall, Pete thought the product tasted good and the chocolate flavor came through nicely. “It is a bit on the sweet side,” he said. “There is a sweet aftertaste in your mouth after each sip.” He rated the taste a 3 out of 5, and sweetness a 5 out of 5.

He didn’t notice any side effects or digestive issues after sipping this protein shake, though the aftertaste wasn’t pleasant. “Overall, the calories and macronutrients in this product work for a protein shake,” Pete said. “However, I probably wouldn’t use it because it does contain a bunch of added filler ingredients.”

  • Our thoughts: This shake is less rich and not as thick as others we’ve tried
  • Who it’s for: Vegans looking to gain muscle
  • What makes it different: Made with organic plant-based ingredients

Pros

  • Affordably priced
  • Low in sugar
  • Orgain is a certified B Corp

Cons

  • Only available in one flavor
  • Lower amount of protein than other shakes we tried
  • Includes a proprietary blend

Our Thoughts on Orgain Organic Nutrition Plant Protein Shake

Orgain’s Organic Nutrition Plant Protein Shake is our pick for the best vegan protein shake because it contains 20 grams of pea protein. It is great for folks looking to avoid dairy and maintain a plant-based diet.

Kendall tested this protein shake; it comes only in the chocolate flavor as of this writing. She rated the overall value of these shakes 3 out of 5, since a pack of 12 shakes is $35.99, making $2.99 per shake a little pricey.

After tasting the shake, Kendall rated it a 3 out of 5 for flavor. “The taste is decent but not exceptional,” she said. “The chocolate flavor is acceptable and drinkable, though it can come across as somewhat artificial due to the added sugar and flavoring.” Kendall would continue to drink this shake for its nutritional benefits rather than for the taste itself.

Orgain Organic as best protein shake

She rated the texture a 3 out of 5. “It’s thinner and waterier than expected for a protein drink, which made it less satisfying to me compared to creamier options,” Kendall said. It wasn’t unpleasant or difficult for her to drink, but it was missing that rich and smooth mouthfeel that protein drinks often have.

Overall, the drink was not overly heavy, which could be positive for some folks. Kendall didn’t experience any negative side effects, so it works well from a digestion standpoint. She’d recommend this protein shake to anyone who prefers a lighter, less rich shake or is looking for a plant-based option. “It could fit well into a daily routine as a quick, convenient source of protein, especially for those who prioritize clean ingredients over taste and texture,” she said.

  • Our thoughts: We like that this shake contains 300 mg omega-3s
  • Who it’s for: Folks looking for a protein shake to aid in gym goals
  • What makes it different: Contains no sugar and no artificial sweeteners

Pros

  • Available in recyclable bottles or renewable paper cartons
  • Non-GMO certified
  • Allergy-friendly

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Includes gellan gum (food additive) and sunflower oil
  • Third-party testing information not readily available on brand’s site

Our Thoughts on OWYN Pro Elite

OWYN Pro Elite is our pick for the best protein shake for muscle gain because each serving contains 32 grams of protein—the highest on our list. The protein is sourced from pea protein, organic pumpkin seed protein, and flaxseed oil.

Pete tested this protein shake in the chocolate flavor, rating his first impression a 5 out of 5. “This protein drink comes in a 12-fluid-ounce plastic bottle with convenience in mind. The label has a perforated edge around the top that can be peeled away to access the lid. After removing the screw-top cap, an additional foil seal provides another layer of protection that must be removed before drinking,” he said.

Our tester thinks the packaging itself looks great. “It clearly highlights the 32 grams of plant-based protein per bottle alongside the ingredients list and nutrition facts panel. The serving size is the entire container, making this product both convenient and travel-friendly,” he said.

OWYN Protein shake as best protein shake

He started by shaking the pre-mixed bottle a few times before opening. “I was surprised by how smooth this drink was, especially because it’s plant-based and has 32 grams of protein per serving,” Pete said. He rated it a 5 out of 5 for mixability and smooth mouth feel.

When it comes to flavor, Pete rated this shake a 5 out of 5. “Overall, I was impressed with the taste. The chocolate flavor definitely comes through, but there’s also a slightly nutty taste as well, potentially from the pumpkin seed protein.” Pete rated sweetness as a moderate 3 out of 5, noting that this product hits the mark perfectly–it has a subtle sweetness to it, but still feels like you’re having a treat.

“This is a great pre-mixed protein drink if you’re on a plant-based diet and want something that’s convenient and grab-and-go ready,” Pete said of his overall experience. “It’s 100% plant-based, contains 300 mg of omega-3s, and three grams of fiber.” We also like that it’s artificial ingredient free, dairy and gluten free, tree nut free, soy and egg free, and sesame and shellfish free–great for folks who want to avoid possible allergens altogether.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Protein Shakes

We tested protein shakes and scored them on a scale of 1 to 5 for factors such as first impressions, taste, texture, side effects, and value. Our testers considered the protein shakes based on their own experiences and preferences. We then review their testing feedback and data to share our findings and recommendations.

Premier Protein as the best protein shake

Taste and Texture

Flavor plays a big role for us when searching for the best protein shake. We ask our testers to provide feedback on the taste, aftertaste (if any), and pleasantness of the flavor for each protein powder. We rate sweetness on a scale of 1 to 5, based on the strength of sweetness. An overall taste score of 5 is best-tasting, 1 is not drinkable.

Formula

We work with a registered dietitian (RD) during testing to find the most effective and safe supplements. We look for a high amount of protein per serving (at least 20 grams), with as few fats and carbohydrates as possible. We also look for protein shakes without artificial sweeteners and other additives.

Mixability

Since these protein shakes are pre-mixed, we followed the shaking directions (if provided) and then checked for any clumps or undissolved protein. We also considered the mouthfeel of the shakes—smooth, gritty, or somewhere in between.

Third-party testing

We recommend choosing a protein shake that is third-party tested. Third-party testing involves independent verification of safety, purity, and nutrition label accuracy. This helps ensure that the label on the product is accurate. Third-party testing also checks for harmful substances, such as heavy metals and pesticides, to ensure safety.

For athletes, third-party testing is vital to be absolutely sure that the supplement does not contain any banned substances. They should look for products that are certified for sport. Independent testing and certifications help build consumer trust. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) does not regulate supplements, so independent testing is necessary to ensure safety, accuracy, and quality.

Value

When considering value, we place greater emphasis on brands that source their ingredients in America and hold certifications, such as Informed Protein.

Pro Tip

Worried about room in the fridge? Most protein shakes can be stored outside of the refrigerator until opened, so you can refrigerate just a couple at a time to ensure they’re chilled and ready to go.

How to Find the Best Protein Shake for You

Everyone has different needs depending on fitness goals, dietary needs, allergies, and pre-existing health conditions. People also have different day-to-day diets that vary in protein intake. Some folks may need more from a supplement than others.

All to say, there is no single best protein shake for everyone. Here’s what to consider when selecting the best protein drink for you.

Your Fitness Goals

Every individual and athlete has distinct fitness goals, like building muscle, losing fat, or improving endurance and strength. You may want to match the protein shake to your fitness goals.

The best protein shakes have different ratios of protein, carbs, and fat. Some are lean and low-carb to promote weight loss, while others have more balanced macros for muscle gain, vegan or vegetarian needs, or as a meal replacement.

Flavors

It’s important to choose a flavor of protein shake that you genuinely enjoy, because sipping it regularly makes it easier to meet your daily protein goals and stick to your routine. A tasty shake also ensures your protein supplement feels more like a treat than a chore, helping you stay consistent and satisfied over the long term. Finding a flavor you like, such as cookies and cream or cinnamon bun, can help support your nutrition habits and fitness goals.

Protein Source

While whey protein often has the highest protein ratio, plant-based options may be more ideal for those looking to avoid animal products (or who may experience stomach upset from whey).

If you’re opting for whey, we recommend you prioritize grass-fed products as much as possible. Or, if you decide you want a plant protein, look for an option that includes soy, as it has a complete amino acid profile, which you won’t find with other plant-based proteins.

Benefits of Protein Shakes

Protein shakes offer multiple benefits for health and fitness, making it popular among athletes and folks looking to support overall wellness or weight management.

  • Muscle Growth: Consuming protein supports muscle growth and repair, especially after lifting. A 2019 study found that participants who consumed protein supplements before and after resistance exercises over 12 weeks experienced greater improvements in muscle growth, strength, and endurance compared with those who did not supplement.
  • Convenience: Protein shakes are ready to open and sip, making them easy to carry along with you to the gym, work, and for convenience if you get snacky. No need to mix up a messy powder on the go.
  • Weight Management: Increasing protein intake with supplements can help support weight loss by boosting satiety and reducing overall calorie intake. Many studies, including a 2020 analysis, have shown that diets higher in protein may lead to greater weight loss, fat reduction, and preservation of muscle during periods of calorie restriction.
  • Immune Support: Protein is essential for immunity, as it provides critical amino acids for antibodies and other immune system proteins. Research shows that adequate protein intake can help enhance immune function and help the body defend against infection and disease.

What to Avoid in Protein Shakes

There are some ingredients we recommend avoiding when picking out a protein shake:

  • Artificial sweeteners: Sucralose, acesulfame potassium, or aspartame may cause headaches, digestive issues, and other side effects.
  • Added sugars: Sucrose, dextrose, or corn syrup may add unnecessary calories and spike blood sugar.
  • Fillers and bulking agents: Dextrin, maltodextrin, or flour may cause digestive distress and add little to no nutritional value.
  • Thickeners and gums: Xantham gum, guar gum, or carrageenan may cause bloating, gas, or digestive issues for some people.
  • Artificial flavors and colors: Red 40, yellow 5, or blue 1 have no nutritional value and may cause adverse reactions in some people.
