Often, these products will be perfectly safe, but as a pharmacist, especially after the New England Compounding Center meningitis outbreak in 2012, I am concerned about the potential for contamination in these products without regular facility inspection,” Pincus says.

“The law also allows compounding if a commercially available product is not available, so I have seen some online companies co-formulating their GLP1-RA products with vitamin B12 or other vitamins or medications. If a patient truly needs both products on the same administration schedule, perhaps this is helpful. But large-scale administration of unnecessary additives is a red flag for me.”

“Additionally, many of these compounded products are dispensed as vials and syringes that a patient must draw up themselves before administration, instead of the injector pens used by commercial products. This increases the potential for dosing mistakes, and there have been a number of significant overdosing cases reported to the FDA in the last few years,” Pincus warns.
