Spending long days at a desk? If you use multiple devices or constantly look down at your phone, you might have noticed changes in your neck. Symptoms of what is called “tech neck” may include neck pain or strain and changes in your neck’s appearance, such as horizontal creases.

We tested multiple neck creams, considering application, texture and feel, effectiveness, and overall value. Keep in mind that a neck cream is cosmetic skincare. While topical products may help hydrate skin and temporarily improve the look of fine lines and smoothness, these products can’t lift underlying tissue or correct posture-related neck pain. If you’re experiencing neck pain, consider talking with your doctor about ways to reduce the strain.

  • Our thoughts: Our tester was complimented on how smooth her skin is
  • Who it’s for: Busy professionals who want a lightweight, twice-daily face-and-neck serum that layers easily under moisturizer and SPF
  • What makes it different: It’s airy and silky rather than a very heavy, thick cream

Pros

  • Subscribe and save discount is 30% off
  • Can be used twice daily
  • Was gentle on our tester’s skin

Cons

  • May not be hydrating enough for folks with dry skin
  • Serum texture may not appeal to people who want a cream

Our Thoughts on No7 Restore & Renew Multi Action Face & Neck Serum

No7 Restore & Renew Multi Action Face & Neck Serum is our pick for the best overall neck cream because our testers rated it the highest for effectiveness and firming. It absorbed in a reasonable amount of time (less than a minute) and didn’t cause any irritation of our tester’s skin. The bottle itself is small and could easily fit into a work or travel bag. Despite being a twist- off cap, it’s easy to open and close, and it’s small enough to pack in a toiletry bag or skincare product drawer with other products and items.

Olivia tested No7 Restore & Renew Multi Action Face & Neck Serum. Her primary neck skincare concerns are fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness. She rated the application of this serum a 4 out of 5. “This is a lightweight serum! It could be compared to a soft gel-like serum that goes on smoothly,” she said. “So far, I’ve experienced no irritation, and as long as I pair it with a moisturizer, my skin stays soft and hydrated. It absorbs evenly, leaving no streaks.”

No7 Restore and Review as best firming neck cream

For hydration and comfort, Olivia rated this product a 4 out of 5. “I apply the serum twice a day,” she said. “It leaves my skin feeling smooth, but less hydrated unless paired with a separate moisturizer. My skin near my eyes and neck is a bit less firm than the rest of my face and neck skin, but this serum improves comfort as far as appropriate firmness that maintains throughout the day.”

Olivia was very pleased with the firmness and effectiveness of No7 Restore & Renew Multi Action Face & Neck Serum. “I’ve received compliments on the smoothness of my skin. As someone who receives frequent facials and Botox, I’ve been very pleased with the improvements in my fine lines paired with this serum!” She rated it a 4.5 in this category, the highest on our list. Due to its high absorbency and travel-size applicator, this is a great product for someone on the go.

at DRMTLGY

  • Our thoughts: Delivers the hydration and smoothing of a richer nighttime moisturizer
  • Who it’s for: Folks who want a single uncomplicated nighttime moisturizer for both face and neck
  • What makes it different: It absorbed into our tester’s skin in five minutes

Pros

  • Absorbed without a sticky feel
  • Suitable for both your face and neck
  • A little product goes a long way

Cons

  • Doesn’t absorb instantly
  • May not work well for folks with very dry skin

Our Thoughts on DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream

DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream is our pick for the best face and neck cream because our tester absolutely loves the versatile product. She has sensitive and dry combination skin, so this smooth, lightweight product complemented her nighttime routine well. It absorbed into her skin on her face and neck quickly, so she could move on to her next skincare step almost immediately. Our tester also noticed there was no lingering stickiness after application, so she could get to bed after her routine, which worked well for her as a busy, working mom.

Jen tested DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream. Her primary neck skincare concerns include fine lines, dryness, and general prevention. She rated the application a 5 out of 5. “The consistency of the cream is soft and extremely lightweight,” she said. “I really only needed to use a small amount when I applied it from my fingertips. It spread evenly and absorbed within about five minutes. It did not take much time to adequately rub into my skin.”

DRMTLGY as best firming neck cream

When it comes to texture and feel, Jen rated this product a 5 out of 5. “This cream is extremely lightweight! Compared to other products that I’ve used, it’s very smooth and didn’t leave my skin feeling sticky.”

She rated the hydration and skin comfort a 4.5 out of 5. “First thing in the morning, I wash my face, and I can always tell if my face is hydrated with the first splash of water. Using this product, my skin is noticeably more hydrated—and I use far fewer products to get to this level of hydration than I would with a few other products in my routine,” Jen said. Saving you time is always a sign of a great cream.

  • Our thoughts: The buttery texture seals in moisture without using a ton of product
  • Who it’s for: Folks willing to pay more for a rich overnight moisturizer to support a streamlined skincare routine
  • What makes it different: It serves as a good way to lock in intense moisture overnight

Pros

  • Subscribe and save discount is 20% off
  • Butter-like texture absorbed well into the skin
  • A little product goes a long way

Cons

  • Takes about 5 minutes to fully absorb
  • Not for folks who want a lighter, serum-like texture
  • Second most expensive product on our list

Our Thoughts on Obagi Hydrate Luxe Ultra-Rich Moisturizer

Obagi Hydrate Luxe Ultra-Rich Moisturizer is our pick for the best hydrating neck cream because it has a rich, buttery texture that performed well as a nighttime step to lock in moisture. Our tester found that it helped to lock in hydration, worked well with her actives, and supported her skin barrier, too.

Kayla tested Obagi Hydrate Luxe Ultra-Rich Moisturizer. Her primary skin concerns are dryness, redness, and aging/fine lines. She rated the application of this moisturizer a 4 out of 5. “The product spreads nicely on my skin, and I didn’t need to use a ton of it. A penny-size amount is more than enough to get an even layer across my face. The product is thick,” she said.

OBAGI as best firming neck cream

When it comes to texture and feel, she rated this moisturizer a 4 out of 5. “It feels more like butter than a richer cream. “When applying the product to my face, it did melt into my skin nicely, but there was still a noticeable film sitting on top of my skin. I needed to give it time to fully incorporate into my skin and not be so tacky,” she said. Those with tight morning schedules may prefer to only use this cream at night. “The feel was more appropriate for nighttime rather than day, which is what the product suggests,” Kayla added.

She rated long-term effects a 4 out of 5. “This is a good product to add in at night. It did a good job locking in moisture and sandwiching in with more of my actives. Over time, I believe this has helped with my skin elasticity and helped with my moisture barrier, too.”

  • Our thoughts: Our tester noticed plumping in her neck skin after just one week
  • Who it’s for: Professionals who want a clinician-directed, customized prescription formula (and are aware of the caveats of compounded skincare)
  • What makes it different: It’s a compounded face cream that’s created for your individual skincare needs

Pros

  • Prescription formula tailored to your specific skin care concerns
  • Can be used on both facial and neck skin
  • Layers well with other skincare products

Cons

  • May not be ideal for folks with dry skin
  • Our tester found the texture to be gritty and sticky

Our Thoughts on Musely Age Repair Face Cream

Musely Age Repair Face Cream is our pick for the best value neck cream because it’s a prescription cream that can be tailored to your individual skincare concerns for only $36 for two months. Keep in mind that Musely’s skincare products are compounded. This means that the brand should list the active ingredients and strengths on the prescription label itself when you receive it, though their product pages only list a more general ingredient list.

Nicole tested Musely Age Repair Face Cream. Her primary neck skin concerns are loss of firmness, sagging, and general prevention. She rated the application of this cream a 4 out of 5. “I’ve been using two pumps—one for my face and one for my neck—and that provides full coverage over both of those areas. It dries really quickly, but it does feel a little gritty/sticky to me when it goes on, so it doesn’t spread as smoothly or as easily, especially compared to Necessaire’s The Neck Serum that I’m also testing (which feels so silky and spreads super easily),” she said.

Musley as best firming neck cream

For texture and feel, Nicole rated this cream a 3 out of 5. “This is more of a cream, and while it does feel light overall and dries down quickly, it feels a bit greasy and sticky after application, like it doesn’t absorb right away. I apply my moisturizer and SPF, then wait a few minutes to apply my makeup, and I haven’t noticed any huge issues that way,” she said. Busy individuals should note that this product may add more time to your skincare routine.

She rated hydration and comfort a 3 out of 5, writing: “This product doesn’t provide enough moisture for me. I’ve been using this as my second step in my routine after I cleanse, followed by facial moisturizer and SPF. I experienced some dryness and flaking around my eyes and mouth the first time I used this, but I didn’t realize initially that it also contains vitamin C, and I was using a separate vitamin C serum, so it could have just been too much for my skin. I stopped using the vitamin C serum, and the dryness has improved. I’ve only had about one week to use this product, so I haven’t noticed any big improvements to my skin yet, but I do think even after the initial application it plumps everything up.”

Our Thoughts on StriVectin TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS

StriVectin TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS is our pick for the best premium neck cream because it applies quickly, layers seamlessly with other skincare products, and provides noticeable benefits for our tester with minimal time and effort. We think it would be easy for busy professionals to add to their existing skincare routine, and that folks willing to pay for a top-notch product will find it a worthwhile investment.

StriVectin as best firming neck cream

Jennifer tested StriVectin TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS. Her primary neck skincare concerns are wrinkles, loss of firmness, and sagging. She rated the application of this product a 5 out of 5. “It’s soft and velvety—feels luxurious and spreads evenly. It also absorbed into my skin very well. I only needed about a pea-sized amount to cover décolletage and neck,” she said.

When it came to texture and feel, Jennifer was pleased. “It absorbed quickly, but is still a rich cream,” she said, rating it a 5 out of 5 in this category. She also rated the hydration and comfort a 5 out of 5. “My skin felt smoother and more hydrated. I have sensitive skin and rosacea, and my skin tolerated this product well.”

She rated the effectiveness and appearance of firmness a 3 out of 5. “I haven’t seen any improvement in my tech neck lines, but my décolletage is much smoother. My skin is also well hydrated,” Jennifer said.

at Necessaire

  • Our thoughts: We like this serum/emulsion for a quick smoothness boost
  • Who it’s for: Folks with sensitive skin who want a fragrance-free, lightweight neck serum
  • What makes it different: It has a watery, gel-like consistency that absorbs quickly into your skin

Pros

  • Fragrance-free
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Vegan

Cons

  • Subscribe and save discount is only 15% off
  • Watery consistency may not appeal to folks who want a creamy texture
  • If you have very dry skin, you may need to follow it with an additional moisturizer

Our Thoughts on Necessaire The Neck Serum

Necessaire The Neck Serum is our pick for the best hypoallergenic neck serum because it’s easy to apply and absorbs well. The brand says it’s hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and vegan, which is ideal for folks with sensitive skin or who are managing skincare conditions like rosacea. Use just one pump of serum and then let it absorb into your skin, so it’s not time-consuming. Since it absorbs quickly, you won’t have to wait long for your next skincare step.

Nicole tested Necessaire The Neck Serum. Her primary neck skincare concerns are loss of firmness, sagging, and general prevention. She was pleased with how easy application was, rating it a 5 out of 5 in this category. “One pump is all you need to cover your neck and décolletage. It dries quickly and absorbs well, leaving your skin feeling hydrated and smooth,” she said.

Necessaire as best firming neck cream

As for texture and feel, Nicole also rated it a 5 out of 5. “It has more of a gel-like texture—it feels slippery and almost watery when you’re rubbing it into your skin—but I think that’s why it absorbs so quickly,” she said. “It doesn’t feel sticky or heavy at all, and after a minute, you can’t even feel the product on your skin anymore, just hydration and smoothness.”

Of her overall results, Nicole rated this product a 4 out of 5. “I’ve only been using this product for a week, but even after applying it, my skin feels more hydrated, smooth, and plump. It feels more refreshed. I’m interested to see how it improves my skin with time,” she said.

Why the Right Neck Firming Cream Matters to Professionals

Necessaire as best firming neck cream

Professionals (at-home or in-office) may experience tech neck and posture issues from sitting at a desk all day. Using multiple devices throughout the day (and evening) may also impact your posture and neck.

A neck cream or serum can be a practical add-on to your routine if you want to further support your skin. You can layer it under your SPF or use it as a moisturizer for overnight hydration. The benefits are less about adding another complex step and more about enhancing hydration and sun protection on your neck and décolletage.

Keep your expectations realistic, as topical skincare can’t correct your posture or relieve neck pain. It also can’t meaningfully lift loose skin or completely disappear wrinkles. As with any skincare product, be consistent and talk with your dermatologist about any products you’d like to add to your routine. If you’re experiencing pain or strain in your neck, talk with your doctor about ways to improve it.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Neck Firming Creams

Here’s how we tested the best neck firming creams.

Obagi as best firming neck cream

Texture and Feel

Testers made note if the neck creams felt sticky, tacky, gel-like, creamy, or lightweight. They also considered how the creams or serums felt on their skin, and how long it took to fully absorb. Testers rated texture and feel on a scale of 1 to 5.

Formula

We considered formulas with various supportive ingredients, depending on skin concerns. Retinoids have been extensively studied for anti-aging effects such as fine lines. We’ve rounded up the best retinol serums of the year, which you can combine with a neck firming cream. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides may support hydration and plumping of your neck skin. Plus, peptides may help support smoother, firmer neck skin.

Hydration and Comfort

For hydration and skin comfort, testers assessed how their skin felt immediately after using the neck creams. They considered if their skin felt smoother or more hydrated, or if they noticed any irritation or tightness. Testers also noted if the neck cream was moisturizing or worked better when used with an additional moisturizer. They rated hydration and skin comfort on a scale of 1 to 5.

Effectiveness

To evaluate the effectiveness of the neck creams, testers noted if the product(s) made their neck and décolletage look or feel firmer, smoother, or plumper. Since visible improvements in tech neck and fine lines can take longer than a few weeks, testers noted any immediate effects along with weeks-long results. Testers rated effectiveness on a scale of 1 to 5.

What to Avoid in Neck Firming Creams

“Neck skin is thin and sensitive, so heavy fragrance just irritates for no reason,” says Dr. Carol Einstat, MD, of Line Eraser MD. “Most people can’t smell perfume once it’s absorbed into the skin anyways, so you’re just buying something you don’t need. Natural formulas can be heavy in essential oils for the same reason. Avoid layering harsh acids and retinol on your neck from two separate products. The neck skin turns red way faster than your face. And don’t fall for the empty promise of instant hydraulic tightening. There will be a film that rubs onto your skin and flakes off by lunchtime. That’s not tightening,” Dr. Einstat said.

How to Find the Best Neck Firming Creams for You

Here’s what to consider when shopping for the best neck firming cream for you.

Your Skin Type

Determine your skin type before shopping for a neck cream. It could be normal, oily, dry, combination, or acne-prone. It’s also important to shop based on your experience with facial creams in general.

Primary Skin Concerns

Consider your primary skin concerns. Loss of firmness, sagging, general prevention, and wrinkle reduction could all be considered when shopping for a neck firming cream.

StriVectin as best firming neck cream

Fortune’s Final Thoughts

The best neck firming cream is one that fits your skin and your budget when used consistently, not necessarily the most expensive product out there.

If you want a lightweight, twice-daily option that was loved by our tester, choose No7 Restore & Renew Multi Action Face & Neck Serum. If you’re looking for a simple, lower-cost moisturizer, go with DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream. If overnight hydration is your priority, consider Obagi Hydrate Luxe Ultra-Rich Moisturizer. If you prefer a customized prescription formula and are ready to check its active ingredients and potential irritation risks, try Musely’s Age Repair Face Cream. StriVectin TL Advanced Tightening Neck Cream PLUS is a dedicated neck product with a premium price and fast absorption. And finally, Nécessaire The Neck Serum is a lightweight and fragrance-free (plus hypoallergenic) formulation, which is great if you’d like to avoid a heavy cream.

Protecting your skin via sunscreen likely matters more than a specialized neck cream. While a topical neck product may help hydrate and soften how your neck looks, a consistent SPF routine will likely create the most ideal long-term success.

Frequently asked questions

How do you apply neck cream?

“Apply neck cream upward and outward from your collarbone toward your jaw and keep sliding your fingers down past your jawline rather than stopping at your chin as if the neck is some sort of biologically distinct zip code from your face,” says Dr. Einstat. “Letting your neck cream application stop at your chin is part of why your neck ages faster than the skin above it. Apply a dime-sized amount in the morning and night to clean your skin and always remember to bring down whatever you’re using on your face to your neck. Your neck doesn’t have its own special biology that requires its own beauty industry,” she said.

Do you need to use SPF after using a neck cream?

“You absolutely do,” says Dr. Einstat. “Your neck needs SPF more than your face does because no one ever thinks to apply it there. One thing a lot of people forget: If you commute in a car, your left neck and left side of your jaw will age more quickly than the right because UVA rays penetrate through car windows. The majority of what people perceive as an aging neck, whether it’s the crepiness or horizontal lines, is sun exposure combined with gravity. No amount of firming cream is going to fight daily UV damage without sunscreen. Slather your SPF on your neck and chest just like you do your face every morning.”

What ingredients should you look for in a neck firming cream?

“Retinoids for turnover, peptides to help support collagen production, and a humectant like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to help thin neck skin retain water,” says Dr. Einstat. “Niacinamide is great for helping with tone and strengthening your skin barrier, as are antioxidants like vitamin C for daytime antioxidant protection. But please, please set realistic expectations! Creams smooth and soften. They maintain. They do not lift. … Those vertical cords and sagging are muscle and connective tissue, or the platysma that lives right underneath your skin. No topical potion in a jar will ever penetrate that far down. … Meaningful firming on lax skin on the neck is needle-based or energy-device conversation. It’s injectables or in-office treatments.”
