Some days you feel sluggish at work. Maybe it’s harder to concentrate, or your focus and energy just aren’t there. You might even keep forgetting something you just looked up. Well, there are now tons of supplements on the market claiming to help with this—you may have heard of “nootropics,” for example, including things like ashwagandha. Mushroom supplements are another popular option.

Mushrooms have actually been used medicinally for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, and research now shows that certain mushrooms may have health benefits. Lion’s mane is one of the most commonly cited. So, we asked our testing team, which includes health experts like a certified nutrition coach, to examine (and try) some popular lion’s mane supplements. Here are our favorites.

Why Trust Fortune

Our team of expert testers has tried hundreds of the most popular supplements on the market today, using our comprehensive supplement testing methodology to find the best products for all folks.

Our Best Overall Pick

After testing various options, our team agreed that the best overall lion’s mane supplement is Transparent Labs Mushroom Stack.

at Transparent Labs

  • Our thoughts: We liked the high dosage of lion’s mane, though the capsules were slightly large.
  • Who it’s for: People seeking a higher-dosage supplement that includes multiple mushroom varieties
  • What makes it different: Even though it’s a blend, it still contains 1,000 milligrams of lion’s mane—one of the highest amounts in the lineup.

Pros

  • Third-party tested
  • Clear instructions
  • One of the highest doses of lion’s mane in the lineup

Cons

  • Somewhat difficult to swallow
  • Small text on bottle
  • Includes other mushroom varieties as well, which may or may not be desirable

Our Thoughts on Transparent Labs Mushroom Stack

Transparent Labs Mushroom Stack includes organic reishi, cordyceps, and lion’s mane, with the company calling those “three of the most promising medicinal mushrooms on the planet.” The company further claims that these mushrooms promote overall health and longevity through “diverse mechanisms across multiple body systems, especially the immune, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.” Research does show that lion’s mane mushroom may offer a range of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects.

Our tester, Paige, tried the Mushroom Stack supplement. She noted that the bottle had a lot of small text on it, which made it difficult to read, but she reported that the actual instructions were straightforward and simple to understand: Take three capsules on an empty stomach or as directed by a healthcare provider. Paige rated the instructions a 5 out of 5.

While the instructions were clear, actually swallowing the capsules was somewhat difficult. Paige said, “The capsules are large, which made it slightly difficult to swallow three in a row.” She gave this product a 1 out of 5 for the overall ease of swallowing the supplement.

On the upside, “There was no aftertaste or weird powdery taste on the capsule,” said Paige. She rated the supplement a 3 out of 5 for its taste.

Paige also said she didn’t experience any negative side effects and felt the product was reasonably priced.

  • Our thoughts: This supplement purportedly offers cognitive benefits, including memory support.
  • Who it’s for: People interested in lion’s mane for its memory-enhancing potential
  • What makes it different: It features only lion’s mane as the key ingredient

Pros

  • Clear instructions
  • Simple ingredient list that focuses on only lion’s mane
  • No particular flavor—neutral taste

Cons

  • Not the easiest to swallow
  • Website doesn’t show all relevant product info, like Supplement Facts label, and has incorrect information
  • Customer service wasn’t the most helpful

Our Thoughts on Nootrum Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

Nootrum’s supplement includes just lion’s mane as the key ingredient, unlike some other options that include a blend of active ingredients or multiple mushroom types. The company says lion’s mane offers immune, mood, and cognitive benefits, including memory support. Research shows that lion’s mane mushroom may help improve working memory, complex attention, and reaction time.

Pete, a certified nutrition coach, tried Nootrum’s Lion Mane Mushroom supplement. He found the instructions easy to read, rating them a 5 out of 5, and took two capsules as instructed. Pete noted that the capsules can be taken with food or on an empty stomach, and he thought they were fairly easy to swallow, giving them a 3 out of 5 for swallowability.

He also reported that the capsules were tasteless, rating them a 3 out of 5 for their neutral flavor.

Nootrum as best lion's mane supplement

After trying this product, Pete said, “I didn’t notice any immediate benefits in terms of cognition or mood,” and added that he didn’t experience any negative side effects or digestive issues.

Overall, Pete said, “I see mushroom supplements, like this one from Nootrum, as a low-risk and natural way to potentially support brain health, memory, and focus. It seems that you would need to take this for several weeks to start seeing the benefits.”

We also want to note that, at the time of writing, the company’s website showed an incorrect image for this supplement. The bottle pictured says the product contains 1,000 milligrams of lion’s mane, but the company confirmed it actually contains 400 milligrams. Nootrum said they’re working on updating the image.

Best Lion’s Mane Gummy Supplement: Nutrops

Nutrops

at Nutrops

  • Our thoughts: These were easy to eat, though the dosage isn’t as potent
  • Who it’s for: People who don’t enjoy swallowing capsules, or those who want an easy grab-and-go option
  • What makes it different: This chewable option may appeal to people who prefer a gummy supplement for some flavor and sweetness.

Pros

  • Travel-friendly packaging
  • Lemon flavor
  • Easy to swallow

Cons

  • Not as potent a formulation
  • Highest cost per serving in the lineup
  • Added sugar, though there’s also a sugar-free option that uses a sugar substitute

Our Thoughts on Nutrops

Nutrops formulated a gummy that includes multiple mushroom types, which the company says offers a range of benefits. The company says that lion’s mane supports memory and focus, cordyceps offers steady energy, and reishi and coriolus are meant to support mood regulation. Chaga and maitake are also included, and Nutrops claims that they help fight inflammation and promote a healthy gut microbiome. One study showed that lion’s mane supplementation was linked with memory improvement, but the study was conducted in animals.

Pete tested these gummies, noting that one pack (one serving size) includes eight gummies. Pete said, “This single-serve format makes the product especially travel-friendly and helps maintain consistency with serving sizes from day to day. Since gummy supplements can be easy to over- or under-consume when stored in one large container, the pre-portioned packets add a level of convenience and portion control.” Pete also found the instructions easy to read and follow, rating them a 5 out of 5.

Nutrops as best lion's mane supplement

The gummies are “purple, soft, and easy to chew,” said Pete, rating them a 5 out of 5 for how easy they were to swallow. As for flavor, Pete said, “Overall, the flavor is decent, with the lemon flavor doing a good job of masking the earthy notes you would normally expect from a mushroom-based supplement. The product is also well-balanced, meaning it’s not too sweet.” He rated the taste of this supplement a 3 out of 5.

Pete didn’t report any side effects, and in examining the product, he said, “The brand highlights a 10:1 extract concentration, but the individual mushroom doses are still relatively small compared to the amounts commonly used in clinical studies. Overall, I’d expect the potential cognitive benefits to be modest, and this feels like more of a daily wellness nootropic than a high-potency mushroom supplement designed for noticeable cognitive enhancement.”

at Hello100

  • Our thoughts: We like that this option focuses solely on lion’s mane and is also organic
  • Who it’s for: People who prefer organic ingredients
  • What makes it different: It’s a high-dose option, and organic, with lion’s mane as the key active ingredient

Pros

  • Organic
  • Potent dosage
  • Easy to swallow capsules

Cons

  • Lack of instructions
  • Some people may prefer additional active ingredients
  • Organic isn’t necessarily better, though some might prefer it

Our Thoughts on Hello100 Lion’s Mane

Hello100 markets its lion’s mane supplement as “a brain supplement for those looking to achieve more,” saying it helps boost cognition and “achieve laser focus.” The key ingredient is organic lion’s mane, and it’s available in a potent 1,000-milligram dose. Some research does suggest that lion’s mane may offer cognitive benefits like improved speed of performance and reduced subjective stress, but this study was conducted in a small sample involving healthy, young adults.

Our tester, Pete, tried Hello100’s Lion’s Mane supplement and first noted the label’s “clean look” and the large, easy-to-read font. However, the instructions themselves fell short. Pete explained, “There are no suggested uses or instructions on the label. The only information is the ‘Serving size: 2 capsules’ on the supplement facts label.” He rated the product a 1 out of 5 for its instructions.

Hello100 as best lion's mane supplement

On a more positive note, Pete rated the capsules a 3 out of 5 for how easy they were to swallow, noting, “The capsules are on the smaller side.” He also reported that they had no distinct flavor, rating them a 3 out of 5 for their taste.

Pete said of his experience, “I only used this supplement for a day, and I really didn’t notice any benefits in terms of focus or mood. I didn’t have any digestive issues or negative side effects.” He did add, however, that a “1,000 mg dose is reasonable for general cognitive and health support.”

at ELMNT

  • Our thoughts: We liked this affordable option, especially with its fairly high dosage
  • Who it’s for: Those looking for a budget-friendly option with an impressive amount of lion’s mane
  • What makes it different: This is a budget-friendly option that still offers benefits, such as being third-party tested.

Pros

  • Low cost per serving
  • Clear instructions
  • Easy to swallow

Cons

  • Includes a combination of active ingredients, which some may not prefer
  • One reviewer mentioned a mushroom-y smell, but other reviews report no smell
  • A few reviews reported not feeling well after using the product, but the majority of reviews were positive

Our Thoughts on ELMNT Lion’s Mane

ELMNT Lion’s Mane also includes ashwagandha extract, rhodiola extract, and black pepper, with the company calling the product an “elite brain, energy, and mood enhancer.” And impressively, it comes in at a pretty low cost per serving—just 87 cents as of this writing. As for the potential brain benefits, one study showed that in animal models, the compounds in lion’s mane helped delay neuronal death in various neurodegenerative diseases and also helped prevent the loss of spatial short-term and visual recognition memory.

Pete tried this supplement. He noted the “fairly small,” travel-friendly container, and said he found the product instructions easy to read and follow—rating them a 5 out of 5.

He took two capsules with food as instructed, saying they were “standard in size” and pretty easy to swallow. Pete gave them a 3 out of 5 for swallowability.

ELMNT as best lion's mane supplement

“The capsules were tasteless,” reported Pete, giving them a 3 out of 5 for taste, indicating neutral or no flavor.

After taking the supplement, Pete didn’t experience any digestive issues or negative side effects, and added, “I feel like this is the type of product you would need to use daily to see real cognitive benefits. It’s honestly tough to determine the benefits of nootropic supplements since many of the clinical testing relies on subjective feelings from the participants.” Despite that, however, Pete said there is research that lion’s mane may help improve overall cognitive performance when used consistently, adding, “This product may be effective for some people and not effective for others. What I do like is that it’s third-party tested and made in a GMP-certified facility, which is a good sign for the overall quality.”

What is Lion’s Mane?

Lion’s mane mushrooms are so named because, well, they look sort of like a lion’s mane. These mushrooms tend to be larger than standard button mushrooms, and they have an almost fuzzy or shaggy exterior. Lion’s mane mushrooms are edible, and they’ve been used as medicinal mushrooms in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

Research shows that lion’s mane mushroom, otherwise known as Hericium erinaceus, has bioactive compounds and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Lion’s mane is also considered to have potential for helping prevent and manage neurodegenerative diseases, but clinical validation of this and other health benefits remains limited, so more large-scale clinical trials are needed.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Lion’s Mane Supplements

Supplement quality can vary widely. Here’s what we paid close attention to during testing.

Hello100 as best lion's mane supplement

Taste and Texture

We looked at whether the supplements had a particular flavor or aftertaste, and we also considered their texture when applicable—for example, with gummy options.

Formula

We prioritize products with dosages that are aligned with recommended daily values and that don’t contain any undesirable ingredients.

Third-Party Testing

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve dietary supplements for safety or efficacy, which means a product’s ingredients and/or ingredient amounts may be different from what’s on the label. For that reason, we look for products that have been third-party tested to confirm safety and accuracy.

Value

When considering value, we looked at price as well as product formulation.

Pro Tip

Mushroom supplements aren’t the only option if you’re looking for wellness benefits. Some people take vitamin D supplements for immune and cognitive support, NMN supplements for mental clarity, and nitric oxide supplements for mental sharpness. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider which options would be the best fit for you.

Benefits of Lion’s Mane Supplements

To learn more about the benefits of lion’s mane mushrooms, we got insights from Lauri Wright, RDN, an associate professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences and director of nutrition programs at the University of South Florida. Wright said that lion’s mane mushrooms contain bioactive compounds—hericenones and erinacines—that may help stimulate nerve growth factor, or NGF. Wright explained, “NGF is a protein that’s involved in nerve growth and maintenance. It’s for this reason that many researchers are particularly interested in lion’s mane for its benefits when it comes to cognitive and neurological health.” She said some potential benefits that have been previously studied include:

  • Mild improvements in memory
  • Possible support for mood
  • Antioxidant effects
  • Potential immune-supportive
  • Possible support for gut health

Wright said findings from a handful of small human studies suggested lion’s mane produced cognitive performance in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, but that these studies are smaller and shorter term, and lion’s mane can’t yet be considered a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases or mental health disorders.

Additionally, said Wright, “From a nutrition standpoint, whole mushrooms in general are nutrient-dense, lower-calorie foods. They provide fiber, potassium, selenium, and antioxidants.”

It’s important to note that the benefits of consuming lion’s mane mushrooms don’t automatically apply to lion’s mane supplements. Wright said it’s possible that supplements would offer the same benefit, “But this depends heavily on the quality and formulation of the supplement. Because supplements aren’t regulated as strictly as medications, there can be considerable variability between products. Some supplements contain meaningful amounts of the active compounds listed, but others may contain mostly filler.”

Additionally, she noted, many research studies use concentrated extracts and not the powdered mushroom itself, so according to Wright, “Consumers might not always get the same dose/type of bioactive compounds that were used during the research. Also, the evidence for supplements is still quite limited—so while some people report improvements in focus or mental clarity, responses can vary widely from person to person.”

What to Avoid in Lion’s Mane Supplements

Here are some things to look for—and avoid—in a lion’s mane supplement, according to Wright:

  • Look for third-party testing/certification, like NSF, USP, or ConsumerLab.
  • Look for transparent labeling identifying the species as Hericium erinaceus.
  • Look for products that say whether they use the fruiting body because fruiting body products generally contain higher concentrations of beneficial compounds and less starch filler when compared with products grown on grain substrate.
  • Look for standardized extracts listing beta-glucan content.
  • Avoid vague language like “mushroom blend.”

Additionally, noted Wright, “Lion’s mane shouldn’t replace evidence-based medical care, adequate sleep, physical activity, or an overall healthy dietary pattern. All of these have much stronger evidence for supporting brain health.”

How to Find the Best Lion’s Mane Supplements for You

The supplement market can be overwhelming. Here’s what you should focus on if you’re looking for a lion’s mane supplement.

Transparent Labs as best lion's mane supplement

Your Wellness Goals

Everyone is different, so consider your own health and wellness goals as you choose a supplement. We also recommend speaking with a healthcare provider who can review your health history and confirm whether a supplement is a good fit for you.

Form

Choose a lion’s mane supplement that fits your preferences. If you don’t like swallowing capsules, for example, consider a gummy option instead. The more you enjoy taking the supplement, the more likely you are to stick with it and establish a consistent routine.

Flavor

Some people report that lion’s mane supplements can have an earthy flavor, but our testing team reports on the taste of each product so you can note that information and determine whether a certain supplement might be a good fit for you.

Your Other Medications

Always speak with a healthcare provider before adding a new supplement to your routine. If you take other medications, for example, a new supplement could interfere with the other medicines you’re taking. A healthcare provider can inform you of any potential interactions and advise on whether you should avoid a supplement altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Which form of lion’s mane is most effective?

According to Wright, “At this time, there is no strong evidence that gummies, capsules, or powders are more effective biologically. Product quality matters more than delivery, and the best form is usually the one a person can take consistently and tolerate. But from a formulation standpoint, powders and capsules tend to be the most practical.”

What is the downside of lion’s mane?

Wright said lion’s mane is generally considered well-tolerated for most healthy adults, but that there are still some potential downsides, like:

  • It can interact with blood-thinning or diabetes medications
  • There is limited long-term safety data
  • We don’t have evidence on safe use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Some consumers might overestimate benefits because of the aggressive marketing they see on social media

Which is better, ashwagandha or lion’s mane?

No one type of supplement is necessarily better than another, as everyone’s wellness goals and health needs are unique. So, a supplement that might be a good fit for one person may not be a great fit for someone else. We recommend speaking with a healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement to determine if it’s a good fit for you.
