Given the popularity of GLP-1 medications, it’s not surprising that the supplement industry has come up with a category of products marketed as GLP-1 “boosters.” Marketing claims vary, but the general idea is that these supplements can naturally boost the body’s own production of GLP-1.

However, it’s important to note that there isn’t any robust clinical research showing that GLP-1 boosters actually work, and they are not the same as an actual GLP-1 medication. But we know people are interested in this category, so we asked our testing team to try a few of these products and report back. We know that when people are slammed with work and meetings, a non-prescription option marketed as having GLP-1-like properties might be appealing—but here’s what we learned during testing, what our expert said, and a few other things you need to know before trying a GLP-1 booster.

  • Our thoughts: Our tester thought the main advantage of this supplement might be its placebo effect, but she also liked that she didn’t experience any side effects
  • Who it’s for: For professionals interested in improving gut health
  • What makes it different: The proprietary probiotic blend

Pros

  • Clear instructions
  • Easy to swallow
  • Third-party tested

Cons

    • This kind of supplement lacks robust clinical research
    • Product information is difficult to access on the company website because it requires completing a lengthy questionnaire and supplying an email address
    • No noticeable changes in satiety or fullness

Our Testers’ Thoughts on Bioma GLP-1 Booster

The company says its three-in-one synbiotic formula—which includes a combination of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics—enhances your body’s GLP-1 hormone production “to help control cravings, reduce overeating, and support healthy satiety signals.” The formula is designed to promote gut health and metabolic balance, and help support the gut-brain axis, and this supplement is stimulant-free and third-party tested. Additionally, the company says this product is made in the United States in a GMP-certified facility. Instructions are to take two capsules daily with water before your first meal for best results.

Paige, a member of our testing team, tried Bioma GLP-1 Booster and gave it top marks in key categories.

First, Paige reported that the instructions—which are to take two capsules daily with a full glass of water—were easy to read and understand. “They also recommend consulting a medical professional with questions,” she added, rating the instructions a 5 out of 5 overall.

“The capsules are average in size, with a soft outer coating,” said Paige, noting that there was no apparent flavor and the serving size of two capsules per day was easily manageable. She rated this product’s swallowability a 5 out of 5, and the taste another 5 out of 5. For those who want something that’s easy to take on their way out the door or during a lunch break, these easy-to-swallow capsules might appeal.

As for how well the product worked, “I didn’t notice much of a difference after a few doses of this product,” said Paige, explaining, “I didn’t notice any changes to my satiety or fullness.” She said she didn’t experience any side effects, though. Paige’s takeaway was that products like these using GLP-1 as a buzzword “really get people’s attention,” but ultimately she said they may just function as placebos—which research shows may still be effective in some cases.

  • Our thoughts: We appreciate the third-party testing, and the company’s disclaimers that results can take at least three months and that this product isn’t meant to treat or cure any disease
  • Who it’s for: Professionals prioritizing weight management who may benefit from a peptide-based formula
  • What makes it different: Formulation includes a tripeptide complex, African mango seed extract, and a red chili pepper and fenugreek complex

Pros

Cons

Our Testers’ Thoughts on The Absorption Company WLP-1

This GLP-1 booster includes something called the “Body Ready tripeptide complex,” which is meant to help reduce cravings, increase caloric burn, and promote healthy weight management. To use, you take two capsules daily before your largest meal of the day. The company website says this supplement works gradually, with noticeable changes typically appearing after three to six months of consistent use. The company website also notes that this isn’t a pharmaceutical product, and that it’s not meant to treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Paige tested this GLP-1 booster as well, first noting that the instructions were easy to read and follow. She rated them a 5 out of 5.

The pills were also easy to swallow, with Paige rating them a 5 out of 5 for swallowability. She explained, “The pills are in capsule form and are not too large. And the serving size of two capsules is not too large to take daily.” She also said the capsules were soft, which helped make them easier to swallow.

“The product is tasteless,” said Paige, adding, “The capsules do not have any bitter or sweet taste, or an aftertaste, and they aren’t chalky or sugary.” She rated the taste a 5 out of 5.

After taking this supplement for a few days, Paige said she didn’t notice any real effects. “I didn’t notice a change in my cravings or satiety, and I think this is because the instructions recommend taking the product for at least three months,” she said. Paige also said the product didn’t cause any side effects. If you’re a professional looking for instant results, this supplement may not be the best fit—and instead is better suited for those who know that sometimes a product’s ROI can take a little more time to become evident (if there is one, that is).

Paige said she thought this product was quite expensive for a one-month supply, questioning the value of purchasing a product like this instead of an actual GLP-1 medication if a user was eligible for it. She said if someone wanted to try a non-prescription route first and had the budget and patience to wait a few months, she could see this supplement being an option, but that otherwise she wondered if taking an actual GLP-1 medication would be better.

Our Testers’ Thoughts on Midi Health Daily GLP-1 Support

This GLP-1 booster is designed to help “ease nausea, replenish nutrients, and support energy,” plus “help women on GLP-1s stay comfortable and confident on their plan.” In short, this supplement targets some of the possible side effects of GLP-1 usage, like nausea and digestive upset. When you’re on the go, moving from meeting to meeting or between the office and client sites, these purported benefits may appeal to folks who want to ensure their medication doesn’t get in the way of what they need to accomplish for the day.

The instructions say to take two capsules daily or as directed by your clinician, and that “it’s fine to take an extra” if you have any lingering nausea.

Paige tested this supplement as well, first explaining that the instructions are to take two capsules daily. “The instructions are easy to read and understand,” she said, rating them a 5 out of 5. Our team thinks the ease of getting started with this product will make it easy to add into your routine without having to adhere to a complicated regimen.

When it came to actually taking the supplements, Paige said, “The capsules are not too small or too large. They have a soft outer shell as well, and are really easy to swallow. Taking two capsules per day didn’t feel like it was too much.” She rated the swallowability of these capsules a 5 out of 5.

“I did not notice any taste, or aftertaste when I took these capsules with water,” explained Paige. She rated the taste a 5 out of 5.

After using this product for several days, Paige said, “I didn’t notice any changes to my cravings or energy while taking this supplement, and I didn’t have any adverse side effects or bloating.” She appreciated that this supplement included multiple forms of vitamin B, and she liked the inclusion of ginger as well to help with stomach soothing. That said, Paige didn’t think this product could realistically replace a GLP-1 medication.

Why GLP-1 Booster Supplements Matter to Professionals

As we’ve already noted, these products aren’t supported by clinical research and shouldn’t be considered “dupes” for actual GLP-1 medications. But we know people, including many professionals, are curious about GLP-1 boosters. For nine-to-fivers who value efficiency and convenience, the appeal of a GLP-1 booster may include the generally low cost of entry, portability, and easy-to-swallow capsules. Here are some other reasons we could imagine GLP-1 supplements appealing to professionals.

If you want help with weight loss, gut health, or managing GLP-1 side effects: We want to be clear that these products are not FDA-approved for weight loss. If you’re curious to try a GLP-1 booster for any of the above reasons, we’d suggest choosing one that’s third-party tested—like all of the items in our lineup—and after consultation with your healthcare provider. You may also note the variability in these products based on their marketing claims, which can make it easier to choose one tailored to your needs. For example, Bioma GLP-1 Booster purportedly helps with cravings, overeating, and satiety.

If your schedule makes appointments difficult: Even though GLP-1 medication platforms make it easier to get prescriptions, professionals who highly value convenience may still want to try a non-prescription option first. GLP-1 boosters may seem like a natural starting point, but again, check with a healthcare provider, choose a third-party-tested product, and make sure you  pick a supplement that matches your unique needs.

If you travel frequently for work: The supplements we tested are all travel-friendly and come stored in compact bottles that can be easily tossed in a toiletry kit or other luggage. Every product we tested included 60 capsules per bottle, so all three products should travel well.

How We Tested and Selected the Best GLP-1 Boosters

Here’s how we chose our lineup.

Formula

We paid attention to each product’s ingredient list, ultimately choosing a lineup that showcased a wide variety of options.

Serving Size

A product’s serving size matters because if it feels excessive, that can affect a person’s likelihood of taking the product consistently. So we looked for modest serving sizes that didn’t seem too large, with all products in our lineup requiring two capsules per day.

Taste

Sometimes supplements can have a distinct taste, even if they’re meant to be unflavored, so we asked testers to report any noticeable flavors or aftertaste.

Third-Party Testing

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t approve dietary supplements for safety or efficacy, which means ingredients and their amounts may differ from what’s on the label. So when choosing our product lineup we looked for products that had been third-party tested to confirm safety and accuracy.

Value

What matters most in a supplement can vary from person to person, but price is often a factor. We looked for a range of price points, and the cost breakdown is below.

Bioma GLP-1 Booster$56.9930$1.90

Pro tip

If your primary goal is weight loss, you may be interested in other options, like weight loss programs. We’ve also previously reviewed fat burner supplements and weight loss pills, both of which are similar to GLP-1 boosters in that they’re generally not research-backed, make bold marketing claims, and shouldn’t be considered magic pills in any way.

How GLP-1 Boosters Work

GLP-1 boosters aren’t the same thing as GLP-1 medications—an important distinction. As Gevork Tatarian, M.D., a board-certified cosmetic surgeon and co-founder of Elevé Cosmetic Surgery, explained, “Prescription GLP-1 medications work by directly activating receptors involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation. The supplements being marketed as GLP-1 boosters claim to stimulate your body’s own production of the hormone. That’s a pretty significant difference.”

As for the actual effectiveness of GLP-1 boosters, Tatarian said, “Prescription medications have been studied extensively in clinical trials. We know how they’re supposed to work, what doses are effective, and what the potential side effects are. We simply don’t have that same level of evidence for these supplements.”  Tatarian added, “It’s important to understand that ‘GLP-1 booster’ is really a marketing term. It doesn’t mean you’re getting anything close to the effects of a prescription medication.”

Types of GLP-1 Boosters

There aren’t clear-cut categories of GLP-1 boosters, as both form and content can vary widely. Our lineup includes GLP-1 boosters in capsule form, but you may also be able to find them in gummy or other forms, for example. And while probiotics are a popular ingredient in GLP-1 boosters, some may not include any probiotics at all. Formulations vary widely, as you can see from our own lineup.

How to Find the Best GLP-1 Booster for You

As always, we recommend speaking with a healthcare provider before beginning a new supplement. After doing so, if you plan to shop for a GLP-1 booster, here are some things to consider.

Key ingredients

Consider the symptoms you’re experiencing that are prompting you to consider a GLP-1 booster and look for a product that contains ingredients designed to help those symptoms. Formulations vary, and you should choose one with ingredients that are best designed to meet your needs.

Cost

Consider product cost, if that’s a key factor in your purchasing decision, and also note the cost per serving. We tested products with a range of prices so most people should be able to find something that suits their budget.

Third-party testing

Because the FDA doesn’t monitor dietary supplements in the same way it monitors prescription medications, make sure to look for products that have been third-party tested to confirm safety and accuracy.

Benefits of GLP-1 Boosters for Weight Management

As Tatarian noted, GPL-1 boosters haven’t been studied extensively in clinical trials in the same way that prescription medications have been researched and tested. The evidence for this supplement is lacking, and the label “GLP-1 booster” is often considered a marketing term as opposed to an accurate product description. Be sure to speak to your healthcare provider if you’re interested in taking a GLP-1 booster, as they can review your medical history and current medications and advise on a course of action.

How to Take GLP-1 Boosters

Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions if you choose to take a GLP-1 booster, as directions can vary from product to product.

What to Avoid in a GLP-1 Booster

According to Tatarian, here’s what to look for, and avoid, if you’re considering a GLP-1 booster.

  • Avoid dubious-sounding marketing claims: “I’d be skeptical of anything calling itself ‘natural Ozempic,’” said Tatarian, adding, “That’s a pretty big red flag. I’d also stay away from products promising dramatic or rapid weight loss.”
  • Look for transparent ingredient lists: “Look at what’s actually in the product,” said Tatarian, noting, “Are the ingredients and doses clearly listed? Is there legitimate human research behind it? Has it been independently tested for quality? Those are the questions I’d be asking.”
  • Be skeptical of “natural” products: Tatarian explained, “Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Supplements can have side effects and interact with medications. I always encourage patients to talk to their doctor or pharmacist before starting something new, particularly when the marketing promises sound too good to be true.”

Fortune’s Final Thoughts

If you’re already considering a GLP-1 booster supplement, remember to choose the product best suited for your needs. Bioma GLP-1 Booster or The Absorption Company WLP-1 is geared toward weight loss support, with the Bioma supplement offering the bonus of probiotics to help promote gut health, and Midi Health Daily GLP-1 Support is targeted toward people already taking GLP-1 medications who may need assistance managing side effects.

All are third-party tested, which we appreciate, but we want to reiterate that anyone interested in a GLP-1 booster should first speak with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement—especially given that they aren’t regulated in the same way as pharmaceutical medications.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight on a GLP-1 booster?

According to Tatarian, “It’s possible, but I would be cautious about attributing that weight loss to the supplement itself. Some ingredients, particularly fiber, can help people feel fuller, which may lead them to eat less. But that’s very different from saying a product is producing the same effects as a prescription GLP-1 medication.” Tatarian added, “I wouldn’t want patients spending money on these products expecting anything close to the weight loss we’ve seen with medications like Ozempic or Wegovy. The evidence just isn’t there.”

Is there a GLP-1 booster that works?

“At this point, I haven’t seen convincing evidence that these over-the-counter boosters deliver the kind of results consumers are being led to expect,” said Tatarian. That said, he added, “There is some interesting early research suggesting that certain fibers and probiotics may influence the body’s natural GLP-1 production. But increasing a hormone level doesn’t necessarily translate into meaningful or sustained weight loss.” He noted that he’d want to see reliable human clinical data showing that a product actually works at the dose being sold, not just research on an individual ingredient—or testimonials or before-and-after photos.

How is a GLP-1 booster different from a GLP-1 medication?

As Tatarian explained, prescription GLP-1 medications work by directly activating receptors involved in appetite and blood sugar regulation, while GLP-1 boosters claim to stimulate your body’s own production of the hormone. However, while prescription medications have been studied extensively in clinical trials, GLP-1 boosters have not—so the evidence is simply not there to support the usage of this kind of supplement.
